Albion loan stars are gone but not forgotten

Joe Mattock did well on loan at Albion Joe Mattock did well on loan at Albion

Albion are keeping close tabs on the loan stars who helped them to a top-ten finish.

But coach Charlie Oatway has warned they will have to wait before knowing whether any of the quartet could return to The Amex.

The Argus understands Joe Mattock, who made the Seagulls’ left-back spot his own, is expected to be surplus to requirements at West Bromwich Albion, whoever takes over in charge from Roy Hodgson.

Club-mate Gonzalo Jara Reyes stands more chance of forcing his way into next season’s squad although he was not in the picture when the Baggies ended their season at home to Arsenal yesterday.

Sam Vokes (Wolves) and Gai Assulin (Manchester City) were also with the Seagulls until the end of the Championship campaign.

None have been ruled out of Albion’s plans for next season.

Albion coach Charlie Oatway said: “The good thing with Sam and Gonzo and people like that is that they have come and played for us now.

“We know what they are like and they know what we are like. It goes both ways.

“They got called back at the end of the season by their clubs because they wanted to do fitness testing.

“We agreed we will see what the situation is with them as well as us.

“You can see with West Brom a new manager is coming in and he might want to see them in pre-season so it is not really for us to comment.

“They are their players, not our players. It’s out of our hands. But they are certainly on our radar because we have had them here – Gonzo has had two spells - and liked the boys.”

Albion face another trip to Bolton next season after yesterday’s dramatic finale to the Premier League season.

Wanderers joined Lancashire rivals Blackburn and Burnley in the Championship when they were held 2-2 at Stoke.

Would like Mattock and Assulin back, not too bothered about Vokes or Reyes

Agreed, but the problem will be having to wait until gawd knows when before we can get an answer form their home clubs, if we bid for them at all of course.

Mattock for sure, fitted in very well with style of play and showed some good touches. Assulin I'm undecided about-one thing is almost certain is that he'll not get a look in at his home club so is possibly worth a punt. Vokes and Reyes had plenty of time to convince us fans of their worth, I think we can do better than those two.

Agree RR, Vokes is not the answer & Reyes after a good start was disappointing. Mattock and Assulin would be top signings, City paid a lot of money for the latter and will probably want to recover some of it.

I think your comments reflect what alot of fans think Cap'n Pugwash although I wouldn't completely discount Vokes as a back up striker depending on (a) who else in the target man mould is available and (b) what budget Poyet is given.
Talking of Poyet pleased to see that he is not featured in the speculative candidates list for the Villa vacancy on the Sky Sports Football News website.

Mattock is the only one worth persuing.

Reyes must be on really good money and is not worth it, far too inconsistent.

Assulin is unconvincing as is Vokes. I thought one of the best forwards down at the Amex was Andy Keogh from Millwall. He'd be worth a punt.

I am sure if Gus was totally convinced by any of them he would have been making more forceful advances to acquire them. Only Mattock looked like he was an upgrade on what we already had. Charlie hasn't added anything that Gus hadn't already said a couple of weeks back. I assume Gus is on holiday at the moment?

No they didn't - Assulin was a free agent when Man City picked him up. Therefore, no money to recoup, only training and possible profit.

I agree 100% with you namgo on all fronts. I thought Keogh was quality too, I'd add his team mate Trotter to that list aswell though.

I know for a fact that Assulin thinks he'll be here next season, whether that's permanent or on a continued loan basis not sure, Mattock would be a good purchase, and my mates drank with Sam Vokes's dad before every match, he wants to stay.

Doubt we will see any of these back, Reyes and Mattock both decent enough but didnt really rate Vokes, the lad from Man City has potential but there will be a lot of good players available on a free over the next couple of weeks/month so I'm sure Gus will have a few lined up.
Still think that a good keeper should be top of the list and then we can start building from the back, i cannot see us adding too many new faces as though as that can have a negative impact so at most I would expect 4 or 5 players coming in.
As always - In Gus We Trust

Agree with all of the above.

Vokes is a possible but I hope we can get a nice surprise up front.

Think Assulin looks very promising indeed...would like both him and Mattock...the latter on a permanent, the former on a loan to (possible) buy deal.

By the way, Ballantrrae, your Gus / Villa info is sadly no longer accurate (3rd favourite on SSN tonight).

I met Vokes' dad in Dick's Bar post-match sometime in the latter part of the season. He said Sam was enjoying his time here then.

According to SSN Gus 7-1 and third favourite to take over at Villa. What amazes me is Paul Ince has better odd's to take over than the current Reading and Swansea managers.

HOVEPARKRESIDENT, learn to spell you cretin. I've seen you abuse others on previous threads about their grammatical errors. Practice what you preach and all that. You should say "forgotten very soon too" not "forgotton very soon to". Chump. If you're going to inflict your idiot point of view on us, at least learn how to spell better than a five year old.

Can't see anything happening quickly. Both WBA and Wolves have changed managers so they will want time to assess their respective squads. We will be looking at plenty of players, I imagine, but do we need that many? There is a lot to be said for teamwork as Norwich and Swansea have demonstrated.

Captain Haddock thanks for the update re Poyet/Villa. I must say I was surprised (pleasantly0 that he wasn't on the initial list since he seems to be on every one the moment a vacancy appears.
Interesting posts re Vokes wanting to stay.
