Seagulls are in safe hands

Peter Brezovan finished the season as No.1 at Albion Peter Brezovan finished the season as No.1 at Albion

Charlie Oatway has backed Albion’s two senior goalkeepers to see them through another Championship season.

But he admits it is unclear whether boss Gus Poyet will look for reinforcements between the sticks.

The Seagulls released David Gonzalez, Michael Poke and development squad keeper Mitch Walker recently. Walker has agreed terms with Blue Square Bet south side Dover, who are managed by Nicky Forster.

That leaves Casper Ankergren and Peter Brezovan as Albion’s two keepers, both with a year left on their contracts.

First team coach Oatway said: “I haven’t spoken to Gus about that in any depth but we have got two fantastic goalkeepers here who played big periods of last season. We know they can do the job.”

Walker’s move to Dover is a disappointment to Eastbourne Borough, where the goalkeeper finished the season on loan.

Boss Tommy Widdrington said: “We made it clear that we would like Mitch to join us but we couldn’t compete with the deal on offer at Dover.”

Beg to differ with you on that one Charlie, especially in respect of Casper.

Seems to set us up for another midtable season at best,a top goalie would have saved us a few points and probobly given us a playoff place.

that little snippet will disappoint many Albion fans who see the keeper as our weakest link. Brezovan seems to have a tendency to panic under pressure which means despite playing well most of the time he is always liable to have an absolute stinker. That doesn't insopire confidencein his defenders. Casper made silly mistakes last season - great shot stopper but every time the ball is crossed into the box it's a matter of holding your breath and waiting for a disaster to happen. There are any number of competent shot stoppers playing professional football but the very best keepers are the ones who command the box and that is what we don't have!

TBF he was hardly likely to say anything else, was he? He cannot really tell players that they are going to be replaced if better comes along.
Prettty much a non-story.

If we want the premier league, we need the reassurance between the sticks. Ank didn't provide it and although Brez pulled off some incredible saves this season, he doesn't feel the team with confidence. You can see that during set pieces, there seems to be panic in the area almost everytime. For me, Brez is a great 2nd option but we need a great 1st.

Safe hands, you really are having a laugh. Ankergren and Brezovan cost Brighton so many points last season and along with poor management definitely cost Brighton at least a play off place.
This statement just demonstrates that Poyet and co haven't got a clue what they are doing.
Lets hope Villa are stupid enough to come for Poyet and then whoever takes over here, has a mass cull.
Unbelievable!!

While we can certainly improve our goalkeeper options, I have to say I don't think it's the most important part of our summer rebuilding. How many outstanding keepers did we see in the Championship last season.... not many! Both Casper and Peter are compotent, they have both made mistakes, but how many point did they actually cost us last season? Money better spent elsewhere in my view.

HOVEPARKRESIDENT, learn to spell you cretin. I've seen you abuse others on previous threads for basic spelling mistakes. Practice what you preach and all that. Instead of saying "are aloud" it should be "are allowed". Chump. If you're going to inflict your idiot point of view on us at least spell it right.

If the club had a bottomless pit of money and a manager who did not honour his players' contracts then I'm 100% certain Gus would go out and get a new keeper or two. But as we don't have limitless funds and that Gus does honour contracts (he has already come out and said that), it makes sense to use what you have if you can spend your budget in other areas. Its about priorities.

Let's assume that between Brez and Ankergren they will cost us about six points due to errors/clangers. I bet Gus is thinking that the money he has in his budget, that he could use on a keeper, will get Vicente or a striker and win 12 points a season.

You really are a bit dim, as you must've realised that you had serious spelling deficiencies when you criticised someone else's spelling yesterday, so it's just gonna bite you in the bum every time you do something like this.

I do believe that we need a keeper, maybe not as desperately as others are making out, but we do need one.

There are now 2 out of contract at Bolton - Jaskellainen and Robinson - probably won't be able to afford their wages though.

Bring back Perry Digweed!

I find this hard to believe that BHA staff can't see what 20,000 supporters saw for the whole of last season, the goalkeepers we have are not good enough. Whenever I hear discussions about which positions need strengthening, it always starts with the goalkeepers. I find this rather worrying for next season.

Ken in Spain says...
12:29pm Tue 15 May 12

The party line from Charlie, of course. He could hardly say anything else. Going down to 2 Goalies (both under contract) from 5 last season sends a clear signal that they are looking for a No 1 at least. Fraser Forster for me. On loan to Celtic last season from Newcastle and subject to a bid of 2 million. Young with top level experience.

Hovite says...

Most clubs could do with better goalkeepers but the trouble is there are not that many about. All the really good ones are taken by the Prem and unfortunately we cannot just magic one in.

"Seagulls are in Teflon hands" would be a more accurate headline. All that should be read into this is that Gus is away on a well-deserved holiday and Charlie is being kind enough to the Argus to give them some non-story to fill their back page. In the newspaper industry, it's know as the "silly season". This is a silly story.

Well that's what Gus has been doing ever since it became apparent we might struggle to make the play offs. Surely they can't take the fans as idiots - Neither of these keepers are top drawer - adequate but never going to inspire the confidence required in the defence.

I agree wiseman of hove, hopefully with a summers worth of GK training there is no reason to write our Keepers off.

6:51pm Tue 15 May 12

Bit of a thing there, I heard that Tony Godden has left the club. I think that goalies need match time, and the only way for Brez to improve further is through play.

But what do I know?

gordongull says...
7:04pm Tue 15 May 12

Only seven teams conceded less goals than B&HA in the League.
I don't see a new goalkeeper as highest priority, and as they are still under contract, it is probably safe to assume that they will start the new season as 1st and 2nd choice.
We need to find a way of scoring more, and that is where the available transfer funds should be directed.

tonytowner1 says...
8:04pm Tue 15 May 12

Lovely to see Tony's got a season ticket!! Main difference is that Brez saves shots that come in from outside the area and Casper demonstrated he's pretty ropey on that. Brez's first game was Southampton at home I believe? Not a bad run for a few matches after that from memory!!

seagulltess says...
8:41pm Tue 15 May 12
