Poyet says Albion skipper is not for sale
5:00pm Friday 18th May 2012 in Sport By Brian Owen
It would take a massive bid to buy Gordon Greer
Gus Poyet has told Albion’s rivals it would take an “unbelievable” offer to tempt him to sell his skipper.
The Seagulls have rejected a shock bid from Barnsley for Gordon Greer.
Now boss Poyet has declared his defensive kingpin is not for sale – unless a massive offer comes in.
The Tykes are believed to have tabled less than £100,000 for Greer, who cost the Seagulls a reported £250,000 from Swindon two years ago and has been a key member of the side ever since.
Poyet said: “We are not surprised by anything but it is not an issue, it’s not our problem because he is not for sale.
“We can’t even talk about it until something massive comes in for someone, something that is incredible and we cannot reject.
“But he is the captain of the football club so it would take something incredible for us to consider.”
Greer scored against Barnsley when they visited The Amex in November and watched from the touchline as the sides ground out a season-ending 0-0 draw at Oakwell last month.
His style of play would suit that favoured by Tykes boss Keith Hill, who likes his teams to pass from the back.
But the offer caught even observers in South Yorkshire by surprise given that central defence is not seen as an area Barnsley urgently need to improve.
Greer is one of a host of players whose contracts expire next summer but Poyet said he would not be negotiating an extension as a result of Barnsley’s offer.
He added: “With the players under contract we are not ready to treat anyone differently.
“They are all in the same situation so there are not going to be any surprises.”
Poyet has confirmed he would be interested in bringing Joe Mattock back to The Amex but conceded he could face stern competition.
Mattock was released by West Bromwich Albion this week and a four-figure weekly wage is not thought to make him a comparative big earner at the Hawthorns.
Poyet said: “He is one of our options because we know him well.
“He was always on our list as a left-back cover or to challenge with Marcos Painter.
“We will consider him. But, yes, it could be difficult.”

Well if theres not going to be a contact extension then Gus is prepared to run the contract down to the end of the season when he can go on a Bosman. Doesnt look like he's in Gus's long term plans. No wonder his agent has been active behind the scenes
If Gus is looking at GG long term then he really must stop with these silly games and show a little respect to a top class professional.

Gus will be off very soon to bigger and better things anyway, so what does he care. Maybe he doesn't want to sell him now because Poyet himself will try and sign Greer at his new club.
One thing is for sure, Poyet, Vicente and Greer will be gone before the start of the season. You know I am always right so move on and think bigger and better than these three has-beens.

What Gus does appear to say is that he won't be selling Greer unless someone comes in with a silly offer and clearly that needs to be well above £100K - my guess would be more than 5 times that. He also says he won't discuss any contract extensions at the moment. He is seeking to bring new players in and may then have to sell some existing contracted players. Once all that is done there is time to discuss contract extensions but sensibly that is unlikely to be until the new season is well under way. That is what we did last year with Bridcutt and Barnes. It is the practice for most clubs unless the player is indicating at this stage that they might not renew and therefore need to be sold to maximise income. What Gus seems to be indicating is that none of those whose contracts are up next year have so far said that they don't want to stay.
Regarding Mattock, my reading would be that he is saying to the player's agent that he wont be held to ransom and he will be aware that there is some genuine interest from elsewhere and some being hyped up. What he is also saying is that we are after the player and for once without raising heightened expectation. Ah well. Damned if he does and damned if he doesn't I guess.

. I am amazed that Hill has made such a derisory offer, clearly undervaluing the player's market value even in his own fans' estimation let alone ours. To get it quite so spectacularly wrong is unusual, even in football. Mind you, saying that, Cardiff offered what £300K for Noone in January and that rose to £1.7m and was still turned down.

Bigger and better things refer to a Premier League club that he will end up at to the disappointment of their fans. Then the two bob manager will sign the two bob defender. Then they will inflict misery on whatever club it may be.

As for the ludicrous offer from Barnsley. We think the world of him but look at the situation. 29 years old, one year left on his contract and you don't open with your best bid. Dare say their fans are happy that they are bidding for a top teams players!
Interesting news about Danny Swanson at Dundee. In the Scottish squad last October along with CMS you say? On a free? Nothing dodgy there, I'm sure. Joey Mattock is in the same situation. He knows what we are about but has to look after himself first. The best offer wins basically.

I remember Gus saying last year that players should have confidence in themselves. Too long a contract leads to complacency. They should have the confidence in themselves to say, we go to the end of the season, see where we are and then talk about contracts. I read that as, why tie yourself in to a 2 or 3 year contract, on Championship wages, when next year we could be a Premiership club. Keep your options open.

He could get injured next season and have no chance of getting a decent contract either with BHA or anyone else

GG has a year left on his contract, which is the reason BFC have bid £100k. Transfer deals are normally structured around the remaining value of a player's contract, unless you're bidding at the top end of the market.
Centre back is the position where we have a great deal of depth in the squad. I for one wouldn't mind seeing GG moved on, as at times his defending was incredibly poor this season.
Before you all jump on my comment I watched all home games and a dozen away games so did see a fair bit of him.

Firstly I'm gobsmacked Mattock is only considered by Gus as cover for Painter. Bang goes any chance of signing an excellent left back who will bridge the gulf between Championship and Premier League football. Easliy the best loan signing we had this season.

If we try to tempt Drogba away from Chelsea for a million, will it make the news in West London?
I have have more confidence in us securing GG's services for at least another season, than some who have commented here.
As with the managerial situation, we are never going to have all the i's dotted and the t's crossed, - football isn't like that.

GG has his strengths i.e. Carrying the ball out from the back as Gus likes it. But when you need him to get involved with the hard nitty gritty side of defending he will shy away from it.
Centre forwards dominate him, he doesn't impose his size and strength when required.
Take a look at Notts Forest's equaliser and how poor a challenge he made for the header which was knocked down to Lynch.
I suggest you watch GG closely next season and you will start to pick up on areas of his game which don't make him one of the best defenders in the Championship.

There were a lot of reasons for that, but ultimately came down to a number of weaknesses - gk, def and mid. This obviously cost us in terms of goals scored. That aside, we are relatively strong at centre back (depending on what happens with Dunk as well as Elphick's recovery from injury) and there are def much bigger priorities.
