Gus cools Swanson talk - but signings are coming

Happy: Gus Poyet Happy: Gus Poyet

Gus Poyet expects to kick off his summer transfer activity in the next fortnight.

But the Albion boss last night said he had made no offer to Danny Swanson, the Scottish attacking midfielder seemingly bound for the Championship.

Swanson, out of contract at Dundee United, has been linked with several English clubs with the Seagulls reported to be leading the way for his signature.

The lifelong Hibs fan expects to turn down a contract offer at Easter Road so he can pursue his dreams south of the border.

Swanson has recovered from a knee injury and is a regular creator of chances from his central role.

The Argus understands Albion have watched the 25–year-old and believe he has talent.

But he is not what they require, either in terms of position or, at 5ft 6ins, physical stature.

Ideally Poyet still envisages Vicente pulling the strings next term.

He said of Swanson: “I know of him but we have not made him an offer.

“We have our list of players for a few positions and we have options. It is actually not that big a list.”

Swanson is good friends with former Albion striker Fran Sandaza and was in the same Scotland squad as Craig Mackail-Smith last season.

Poyet said: “I’m thinking in the next couple of weeks we can make new signings for the club. We have had meetings (with chairman Tony Boom), there is another one next week and I am happy with how things are going.”

Poyet is keen to get his squad together in time for pre-season but recognises two of his most inspired signings – Liam Bridcutt in 2010 and Vicente last year – came with the campaign already under way.

He added: ““The main things is to get the players in for the beginning of pre-season but football doesn’t work like that.

“It is not always in your hands."

Egypt, with Albion defender Adam El-Abd in their squad, kick off a series of three friendlies in Sudan when they tackle Cameroon tomorrow. They then meet Togo on Tuesday and Senegal on Friday.

I doubt there will be any quality signings at all. Any quality players would want to join a quality team with a quality manager. Well guess what is lacking at Brighton? Yes you've got it, quality, quality, quality, there is none at all in any departments.
Decent players will go to decent teams with a decent manager. The writing is on the wall, prepare for disappointment I'm afraid.

I agree with Gus on this one, last thing we need is another Ryan Harley in midfield, Its not just a question of who we sign but its also a question of who we manage to keep. Hopefully we can get some decent money for players like Harley, Vincelot, Sparrow and get in some quality midfielders that can create chances for CMS and whoever his partner will be.
Over the next couple of weeks we will see more names being released from all clubs and hopefully we can snap up some freebies, would love to see Craig Gordon as our number 1 next year but i think thats a massive long shot.

Seems unreal, Adam El-Abd suddenly playing in international matches.

David Connolly is one of the players released by Southampton. He's a kind of Championship version of Michael Owen, in both ability, and injury record.
He is a free agent, andI would love to see him in a B&HA shirt, if a risk assessment concluded that he was worth a punt.

I asked for their opinion on the Saints site, and these are the replies:-

David has been at times brilliant for Saints.
His movement and touch are Prem class. Some of his goals have come at a time that has been very important in both our 2 promotions.
However his fitness problems have constantly plagued him.
Keep him fit and his experience and quality would be an asset to you.
COYR.
Good luck next season.

david connolly is, in my opinion one of the best strikers we have ever had.his movement and positional sense is top drawer and if it wasn't for his injuries he would have been lamberts partner much more often.he always seems to find space in and around the box and he will still get goals if someone gives him a go.not sure how fit he is at the mo but he is worth a punt and he is a free agent so no fee.

connolly is a class player , when fit there's no better striker in the championship imo .

I'd welcome a swap deal with Middlesborough. Marvin Emnes for Craig Mackail Smith. Then CMS would be closer to Scotland and Emnes would be closer to Holland. Would make going on International duty that much simpler for the two of them and would give us a centre forward with good ball control and an eye for a goal.

My comments are not meant as a joke and I do not deliberately make negative and provocative remarks. I say what I genuinely feel and if that go's against the grain then tough. We are all entitled to our opinion on this site and just because mine is different to the majority of Brighton fans who are obviously deluded then so be it.

HPR has stated that he is a B&HA season ticket holder, but not a fan of the club. A season ticket, incidentally, that allowed him a seat in the North stand when he felt like a change one Saturday.
There is no obligation for anyone to tell the truth on this forum, or to make positive noises about Brighton and Hove Albion F.C.
We all recognise HPR as a troll, so trying to get him to see reason is pointless.
The options are not difficult:-

I disagree entirely.
I read the comments on this site because I like to see what genuine fans of the Albion think. That doesn't mean they have to necessarily agree that Gus Poyet is the best thing since sliced bread, or that his tactics are correct all the time. However, although HPR is clearly a wind-up merchant, his humour is cr*p - at least Mr Carrot was funny. And personally, I find his comments on the latest thread re Adam El Abd to be offensive. No genuine person would make those sort of comments about a Brighton player, a local lad too, who has come good. You take him with a pinch of salt if you like. I wil ltake him to be the t*ss-pot that he is.
