Mattock is attracting interest

Up for grabs: Joe Mattock is a free agent Up for grabs: Joe Mattock is a free agent

Albion will face a battle with Championship rivals if they want to bring Joe Mattock back.

Boss Gus Poyet has described the former Leicester defender as “an option” as the Seagulls look to strengthen their squad.

Mattock was a regular for the Seagulls in the second half of last season after switching his loan allegiance from Portsmouth to The Amex.

He has since been released by parent club West Bromwich Albion.

Portsmouth boss Michael Appleton is keeping tabs on the situation but, after speaking to Mattock’s agent, admits realistically his club are out of the running.

Appleton said: “I have been told there are two or three clubs who have enquired about him, and with the budgets they have, you cannot compete with that.”

Blimey!! By the time we have finished fighting all these battles we seem to be having according to the Argus there will be no time to buy anyone!!!!
Because the earthquake that may happen underneath the Amex as two or three scientist have advised!!!!

We need Mattock, he was solid for us last season. But I suppose it depends on who we are "battling with" Also we don't know how big or small our budget is.

It's difficult to see how we could better a signing than Mattock. Bit of a non-story if the only tangible interest is from poor old Pompey. Of course his agent is going to say there is interest from elsewhere as well.

Transfer business should start in earnest soon I hope!!

If we want mattock then I dont think there will be a bigger club with as a brighter future than us bidding for him. Good player and hope we get him, with the other quality we bring in and with vicente fit we are heading for the premiership why would he want to go anywhere else. Great fans, great stadium, great manager, and an exCiting future.

i think we're all agreed. On the evidence provided so far, he would be a good signing. Everyone seems to think we've got a big budget, so maybe he is coming our way ;/

Bit of a non-story really. Everyone knew Mattock would interest other clubs. It maybe that Gus is looking at other, possibly better options at this position. Time will tell - if he goes to another club, it will not be the end of the world.

I gather from the ZZZZZZZs that you HPR are going into hibernation as far as postings are concerned for a little while.
Regarding Mattock I hope we get him since I felt he was the best of the loanees last season and an improvement on our other options at left back.
With regards to Poyet I noted that under the Poyet / Swansee thread that the Argus quotes Gus as recently saying " If you think about all that (speculation on Managerial vacancies) you forget your job and I'm trying to get players in, that's the main thing now".
Good to hear that he is focusing on BHA and strengthening the squad for next season.

I think we should club in for a pro nut sack shaver for this lad wherever he ends up!

GP will NOT be going anywhere this season. His ego is WAY too big to go to Villa or Swansea.
Theres a job to be done as of yet !

Lastly can we please have a top notch signing we must have something in the kitty. Every game -season tickets aside is costing me a 20 quid+ standard !!

Just saying.

Mark Dixon says...

I think people are getting itchy feet since GP's comment about transfer activity in a fortnight. We all know GP keeps these things close to his chest until pen is put to paper.

Just look at CMS joining the Albion, no one saw that coming, same applies to Vicente who l hope like many others we can hold onto.

I think deals may well have already been done or very close to being done and look forward to reading about them, this week/next week but as long as there here before the pre-season tour i'm cool with that.

HPR - To have substance behind your opinions, can you please give your views on the following: 1. Who is your preferred choice of manager? 2. Which (if any) of our squad would you retain? 3. Who would you sign?

Why the big fuss about Mattock? Average player, defensively poor at times...not worth a big fee. let him go to Futtocks End. End of.

I forgot to say, that the picture above shows Tom Ince giving Mattock the run around (body language and all that)! Not good enough for the Premiership, if that's what our aspirations are.

Agreed, but I think he's over-rated.

Albion's squad on paper looks every bit as good as, if not better, than Blackpool's (apart from Ince).

If Albion's teamwork had been as good as Blackpool's I think we could have made the top two. Part of the trouble was that Gus didn't always seem to know what his best side was, hence the constant chopping and changing, which didn't help. Players like Noone were brilliant but inclined to hold the ball too long... even Vicente, brilliant as he was, sometimes tried to do it all himself. Craig was excellent, but didn't suit Gus's system, and his close footwork was a bit suspect. Barnes was also excellent, and scored a lot of goals, but his ball control was poor. All-in-all it was a mixed bag of a season, but highly entertaining for all that. There were many plusses, like El-Abd who surpassed my highest expectations, Buckley who is sheer class, and Lua Lua has great potential. Defensively we are suspect and would get annihilated by Arsenal, man-Utd and City. However, we showed against Reading, Newcastle and Liverpool (in the Carling Cup) that when we really go for it, we can give the best teams a real contest.

Gus needs to get the blend of players right, and play a more fluid system to suit the occasion. There are times when a brilliantly executed long ball is far better than the short passing game.

Interesting times, and I hope he gets the right players in.

But we are not in the Premier League, get players in to help us get there and then deal with staying there when needed. Don't run before you can walk and all that.
Mattock, as shown last season, is a good Championship player

I would guess that the reason for no obvious transfer activity is because the players that we are after are probably under contract with their respective clubs. 'It's not eeezie'!

I think it is more likely players waiting to see if Gus is still with us next season. Manager situation very unsettling throughout the leagues at the moment.

You're right, he isn't worth a big fee, he's a free agent, having been released by WBA

Assuming it's true, I am sure Poyet will be pleased. Good for the Development Squad players like JFC who would be able to get more bench time and potentially more first team experience.

Its on the BBC football home page, along with a big "NO" to artificial pitches.
