Struggling Goodwin urged to relax

Dig in: Murray Goodwin needs to regain form Dig in: Murray Goodwin needs to regain form

Mark Robinson today urged his star batsman not to panic over a slump in form.

Murray Goodwin missed out in both innings as Sussex were thrashed by ten wickets by Middlesex in the County Championship.

He scored nought and five at Lord’s and has reached double figures just twice in 11 innings.

Robinson would not say whether Goodwin’s place is under threat for Surrey’s visit to Horsham, which starts on Wednesday.

But he admitted: “When your best player isn’t scoring runs it’s a problem for any side.

“It would be a problem for England with Kevin Pietersen, it would be a problem for India with Sachin Tendulkar. It hurts you.

“The main thing with Murray is making sure he doesn’t over-practise or over-scrutinise.

“Of course you look at technical things but usually runs of poor form like this are all in the mind.

“His confidence is down a little bit.”

Asked if Goodwin could now be withdrawn from the firing line, Robinson said: “We will deal with that closer to the time.”

Sussex suffered frustration in the CB40 yesterday when their match with Unicorns at Southend was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain.

If his confidence is low, put someone else in! If i had a run of form like his for my club side, i would be dropped before now! Robbo will not leave him out-as our 'star batsman' can't be dropped.

Please, please, please can we stop this absurd ongoing chorus of “but Goodwin will come good” nonsense. We are almost halfway through our Championship matches, Goodwin has batted 11 times, been out in single figures 9 of those times and scored 16 and 74. Despite that 74, he has scored a total of just 118 runs and his average is just 10.72. He has a much lower average - and has scored fewer runs - than Magoffin, Anyon and Arif. He is showing no sign whatsoever of coming good. Everyone, but everyone, knows he’s been a fantastic player for us over the last decade and he played a major part in helping us win 3 Championships but there comes a time ……

The kindest thing would be to leave him out for a while. He's been a great servant but he is simply not worth his place in the line up. We have to secure some wins and more batting points or else we'll be in a relegation battle. You simply cannot justify him in the starting line -up. Sorry, but facts are facts and he's not worth a starting place in the team at present, so give someone else a chance. They certainly couldn't do any worse

Remember a couple of years ago when he had a similar (albeit not quite as bad) run of form? He broke that with 344 not out at Taunton. He WILL come good, because the alternative is that he has, all of a sudden, become a much worse player, which is not really that likely. I DO however wish he would join the club for pre-season, because he always looks under prepared come the first match.
