Poyet confident despite Vicente link

Vicente enjoyed an excellent season with Albion Vicente enjoyed an excellent season with Albion

The Yellow Submarine are being linked with Vicente.

But Gus Poyet still fancies his chances of bringing the former Spain international back to The Amex.

Villarreal have Vicente on their wanted list, according to reports in the player’s home city of Valencia over the weekend.

The report claims Vicente did not produce his best form at Albion and would welcome a return to Spanish football.

Villarreal is only about 50 miles north of Valencia.

The report says finances would not be a problem and Vicente would return to the left-wing role in which he starred for Valencia.

Poyet was not surprised by the report and said: “Vicente comes from there.

“It’s up to everyone. We’ll see. But I still think we have a great option.”

Villarreal lived down to their nickname – which they owe to their yellow kit – by sinking into the second division last season.

They are desperate to regain top-flight status but their preparations were thrown into chaos last week when newly-appointed head coach Manuel Preciado suffered a fatal heart attack.

No new signings yet, and rumours that our energy bill last season is hampering our spending power (should have switched to E.On??). Bloom needs to get a grip. Sack the board!!

If Vicente failed to recreate his best form last season, I'd love to watch him when he's on top of his game.

Mattock we can live without, but Vicente is one we should be pulling out all the stops to retain.

The rumour associating Vicente to Villareal also points out his catalogue of injuries at Valencia and points out he would only be signed on a pay par match deal - hardly a mouthwatering deal especially for a Spanish Div 2 outfit. If true I can see why GP remains optimistic.

You may be right and I really hope you are. However, I can't help but think the opportunity to play again in his home country, not far from where he presumably still has a home, and for a club with a bigger profile than us may be too good an offer to resist. The 'play and pay' issue may be important, but I think he may well go. If he does, there's a big hole in our squad if we seriously want to be contenders for promotion. Hope there's a contingency plan.

Remember when he came to Albion Vicente claimed money was not the driving factor to his future. Therefore, a pay-as-you-play deal might not sound too bad to him. My gut feel hasn't changed in that I don't think we'll see him again.

On other threads there has been debate about wages in relation to es-Premiership players. To me it's not just about whether these players 'get real' when looking for a new club, possibly in the Championship, but whether Albion can even compete with the Championship wages being offered by other clubs. In the end market forces rule, and I don't blame players for going where the money is. It must be the rain on this cold Monday morning, but I feel slightly apprehensive about next season. No-one's yet mentioned the situation at Spurs where HR is reportedly close to leaving. If that comes to pass, the usual rumours about GP will start. Flippin 'eck, cheer me up, someone!

Vicente is a great player but to say he had a good season at albion is not true, if we cast our minds back to last season he was injured frequently throughout the season and there were several posts on here querying if Vincente really wanted to be at Albion. Whilst I agree he would be hard to replace, if he does decide to go elsewhere then hopefully Guys will bring in a creative midfielder who can play week in week out and last 90 mins, I would live Vincete to stay but I do not feel as though Albion should be messed around, surely by now Vincete knows if he wants to stay, if he does then why not put an end to this speculation and release a press statement saying this, Im sure personal terms could easily be agreed in the future.

Don't underestimate the influence of the new medical team on his decision making. Vicente became a regular in our first team soon after they arrived.
He publicly blamed the medical staff at Valencia for his continuing injuries, and could see joining another club as too high a risk to his recent return to good health.

He was on a pay-as-you-play deal last season for us. Doesn't mean it'll be the same if he comes back, mind.

Unsurprising that he has been linked with other teams, especially in his native Spain. But this one has just been relegated and currently has no manager. Part of the silly season rumour mill, methinks. I have a feeling he will be back.

He may be tempted - just had a new baby so being near family might be a big factor - but he may not. This rumour comes from a local journalist's blog with no claim to any inside information so let's just wait and see. Some interesting banter today around Albion finances and whether we overspent on operating costs in our new stadium............y
ou can tell it's close season!

I'm anticipating that Vicente will not sign on the dotted line until we demonstrate, by our transfer business, that we match his ambitions for next season. If we sign quality and players who are on his wavelength, players that he deserves to be playing with, I’m sure (hope to god) he will re-sign. If its been said once, its been said a hundred times, Vicente will be our most important signing, but it’s complicated.

If Villareal dont have a manager yet how can they promise to play him on the left wing? Sounds like they are in a mess so who would want to join them?

As stated above when he came to Albion he said money was not a leading factor, we took him on with injuries and all and our medical staff and training department got him where he wanted to be "ON the field playing football, so if he is anyway decent when it comes down to it he will play for us again this season, don't think family is a sticky point as he has already demonstrated he wants to play in the UK. and from Gatwick to Spain is like London to Glasgow only a little faster by plane.

If we are the tenth best nationally supported club with regard to season ticket sales, why can't we afford better wages?

The simple fact is that if Vicente wanted to be at Brighton next season he would just say so. He is waiting for a better offer and only if he doesn't get one will be here next season. The fact that Villarreal have indicated they want him tells you everything really.
Where would you rather be? The hot sunshine of Spain near your family and sipping cold San Miguels or at The Amex in the cold and rain sipping rotten old Harveys.
It's a no brainer and foregon conclusion. Adios Vicente

As I live in Greece and have had nearly 7 years of sunshine with showers in November through to April I can say I would rather be in the UK where at least you get seasons. Living in a hot climate is good but you soon head for shade when it gets to 100F plus. If you want job satisfaction you go where you will be happy working with prospects ahead of you and hopefully Vicente likes the challenge that B&HA have ahead of them over the next season.

You may well be right but don't forget it was the fitness regime he was subjected to here that brought him back to regular first team football. He would be foolish to overlook that when considering his options. As long as he is offered decent money which is not far below what he is offered elsewhere, we may well see him again next season. The Club and supporters did everything to make him feel at home so let's hope it's "Welcome back Vicente" (whatever that is in Spanish).

Spot on remarks. There was a subtle sense of frustration running through Vicente when he would produce something magical but others were not reading his game.
I don't think any other player to pull on the blue n white shirt for so few games has had such an emphatic influence on the pitch, and produced such an out-pouring of admiration off it. Very special player, and wonderful memories to take from our 1st season in Falmer.
I'm 50/50 whether he'll return, especially with a young family, but if anybody can pull this off for a second time, then GP's influence and enthusiasm could yet seal the deal.
