Poyet issues calming message

Could return: Gus Poyet remains hopeful on Vicente Could return: Gus Poyet remains hopeful on Vicente

ALBION boss Gus Poyet has issued a calming message to fans anxious about the club’s lack of transfer activity.

And he remains optimistic Spanish star Vicente will return to the Seagulls for the start of pre-season training.

The players report back next Monday with Albion yet to add to the squad which finished tenth in the Championship last season.

Poyet, back from visiting his family in Uruguay, is relaxed about the situation.

He told The Argus: “I’m really calm at the moment, although if we are still in this situation on the 15th of July then I am going to be a little bit nervous!

“Last year we signed only one before the players reported back, or one-and-a-half because (Will) Hoskins was agreed. The only one was (Will) Buckley.

“Things can happen this week. When you are talking to players and explaining to them how important pre-season is for me and them then that is a consideration for the players as well.

“They can wait, wait, wait but there is a moment when they need to make a decision.

“The league starts later this year (August 18), which means we have got until the beginning of July when everybody will be starting.

“We are coming back a little bit earlier. It will be a very easy comeback, an extra week before we start the hard work.

“By the beginning of July another three, four or five players would be good. We’ve got a good chance of that happening.”

The Argus revealed on Saturday that Albion face competition from at least one other un-named club in their quest to re-sign Vicente, who is still in Spain at the moment.

Poyet said: “We’ve still got a great chance. I hope to have him training with us next Monday.”

Wouldnt it be fantastic if all of our fears were answered this time next week with a story headed "Albion make multiple signings" and then a picture underneath, with Vicente stood next to Trotter, Heskey, Boyd, Kuszczak, Judge and a couple of new fullbacks, all holding the mighty blue and white stripes. Forever the optimist.

At least we now no that there is something to look forward to. I just wonder if the postings on this site and others has made the Argus reporters approach Gus and made him feel he must say something because at the end of the day without those of you who go to the games the club would exist.

It sounds as if offers have been made, but that prospective signings didn't actually bite the club's hand off, including Vicente. In other words, Albion is the last resort option once they're getting a bit more desperate..!

Don't agree. Why do you say Albion is the last resort option,
just because players, clubs and agents are still negotiating and loking for the best deal possible.

well we won't be getting Aaron Wilbrahim - apparently (according to Alan Navarro) we made him an offer but he has signed for Palace instead. Would have ben an okay signing but we can find as good or better even if it's a loan.

I don't know what our wage structure is but the fact that a player who spent half the season on loan with us opted to sign for a club playing in Div One last season suggests we are going to be priced out of the market for a lot of proven Premier/Championship players. Hopefully, our scouts can unearth a few gems from the lower divisions and overseas.

Interesting and quite informative piece from the Chairman today on the Albion website, including the situation regarding hoped for signings.

So why is this this not shown here?
From the Seagulls site:- I am totally relaxed about the situation but I wouldn't expect too much business to be done by the end of June. Obviously in an ideal world we'd have all our new signings done by the start of pre-season but in the real world that doesn't normally happen. But I'm confident that by the start of the season we'll have some very good new signings on show and we will be working on that right up until the end of the transfer window.

"Some of the names we are looking at are very exciting, others will be much less known and maybe totally unknown to a big majority of Albion supporters. But talks and negotiations take a while, because any signing we make needs to be right for the football club, for the player and if there's a transfer fee involved it's got to be right for the selling club as well,so it's not easy to get all of those things ticked and done early in the transfer window."

I'm as nervous as the next man about the lack of signings, it would be nice to get the new players in and learning how the rest of the team plays, however, it's also very reassuring to know that the club is being run properly and is clearly not going to bow down to players/agents demands, we set the wages and if you don't like what's on the table then do one. I would choose stable finances over paying ridiculous wages to players who may or may not perform for us.
It's taken us the best part of two decades to get where we are financially, why risk that by being too impatient? We WILL make it to the premiership and the right players WILL sign for us, but I would rather be an established championship side for the next few seasons than spend a fortune on players, rush to get to the premiership and throw away the stability that people at the club have worked so hard to achieve over the past couple of years.
I for one have 100% faith in what's going on behind the scenes, it will all come good.....I hope :/

Interesting to see Bloom confirming that the number of total season tickets being sold is 22,000 - the club told me today that 21,000 had already been taken.

I'm confident we/Gus will get 'what's needed' to have another very exciting season at the Amex. There will be triumphs and disappointments but isn't that what football is all about for true fans?

Personally I can wait another couple of seasons to get to the Premiership if that's what it takes.
Let’s enjoy the ride and celebrate the fact that we have a fantastic home now and a solid foundation to build on for the future. Bring on Cardiff :-)

Are you suggesting that just because no-one has signed, fans will start voting with their feet and not turn up to matches?

To me, that is utter madness.

As I've said elsewhere, we're not yet in pre-season, relatively few deals have been done by anyone, let alone championship sides, and those players that are being released are still under contract with clubs.

As for highlighting stories that have appeared in The Argus regarding targets, signings etc in June (which I believe you did in another thread), journalists have to work with what they've got, and they are also in the business of helping their employers sell papers. In that respect, if they can spin Gus' words into a seemingly meaningful story, when, in fact, there IS no story then they've done a really good job.

What is the point of panicking about not hearing about signings, when there isn't anything to report?

Finally, I don't believe this "we can't compete with people on finances". If the club think someone is worth it, they will be prepared to pay it. Mattock's decision could have come down to a number of reasons - I don't believe salary was the only one.

There are still certain sectors that are immune to the economic downturn and think they can do better. Currently football is in that category and players seem to be able to call the tune. That will change, be patient it will all come good for the Albion:-)

Whilst the signing of new players would give us something to get excited about, i happen to think the appointment of the new Chief Executive will, in the long term, prove to be the most important signing the club make this summer.

He has serious pedigree and a lot of contacts around the world. He will put this club on a financial footing that many clubs in the league dream of, and provide the means to make our club a force to be reckoned with.

However this will take time, and if it means that we have to wait 2 or 3 years to have the resources necessary to get us ready to push for the Prem then the wait will be worthwhile.

In the meantime Poyet and his back room staff are working hard to get the right players in - rather than just anybody who happens to be available.

NO!!!what I am saying is that you the supporters or fans that go to the games are the ones who keep the club going, without you there would be no B&HA FC so do you not feel that you deserve to be kept informed with real news about the club rather than maybe this or maybe that, I understand that reporters have to make up stories to sell newspapers but as a follower of B&HA for many many years I want fact not fiction about the club I follow, maybe not day in day out but as shown in my previous posting the Argus stated on the 1st June QUOTE:- Gus Poyet was last night anticipating a key month of recruitment for Albion.

I don't feel I deserve anything from the club. I pay my DD, go and watch football, and spend money in the shop. It's none of my business who signs and who doesn't.

That might sound blunt, and my opinion in probably in the minority there, but I would continue to go, regardless of the 11 players on the pitch, and get behind each and every one of them, because they are playing for my team.

You say you want fact not fiction, but then you have moaned in the past when rumours have not been reported on the Albion site!

The reason there has been no news is because there has been, er, no news.

And you're quoted headline from 1st June is pretty vague at best. Gus uses the word 'anticipating', he hasn't said 'will be', 'definitely' or specified what the recruitment will be.

It could be just one player, and a quick glance at the calendar tells me there is nearly two weeks of June left!

So what if no-one has signed, what actual difference does it make to your life, and why are people nervous/angry/frustr
ated, etc? I'm honestly keen to know.

There's a lot to be said for the old boys' network. Sparky Hughes is using it to great effect at QPR, picking up Andy Johnson on a free from Fulham. What a great signing, joining up with Bobby Zamora again. Can anyone think of any similar possibilities in Albion's network...? I would prefer Spurs and Chelsea cast-offs rather than those from Swindon and Leeds if you don't mind !!!

I don't think the fact they were in League One last year is relevant - they are in the Championship this season and are a massive club. It's not like he signed for a tinpot club.

Does this explain the hesitancy to confirm signings/sales?

Cardifffcgull - Spurs outed Harry Rednapp for finishing 4th and failing to secure a Champions League spot. The replacement will be expected to get into those spots next year as a minimum. Gus will not even be in their top 25 targets. He has no Premier League or European management experience and presided over a similar end of season slump as Harry - just at a lower level. If Gus gets the Spurs job I will happily eat my hat and those of every other poster on this site.

My understanding Farside is that it is 'all' season tickets. I think the Corporate element/boxes are excluded but I'm not certain. The question didn't arise when I spoke to the club.
