I don't know what our wage structure is but the fact that a player who spent half the season on loan with us opted to sign for a club playing in Div One last season suggests we are going to be priced out of the market for a lot of proven Premier/Championship players. Hopefully, our scouts can unearth a few gems from the lower divisions and overseas.
I don't think the fact they were in League One last year is relevant - they are in the Championship this season and are a massive club. It's not like he signed for a tinpot club."

Poyet issues calming message

Could return: Gus Poyet remains hopeful on Vicente Could return: Gus Poyet remains hopeful on Vicente

ALBION boss Gus Poyet has issued a calming message to fans anxious about the club’s lack of transfer activity.

And he remains optimistic Spanish star Vicente will return to the Seagulls for the start of pre-season training.

The players report back next Monday with Albion yet to add to the squad which finished tenth in the Championship last season.

Poyet, back from visiting his family in Uruguay, is relaxed about the situation.

He told The Argus: “I’m really calm at the moment, although if we are still in this situation on the 15th of July then I am going to be a little bit nervous!

“Last year we signed only one before the players reported back, or one-and-a-half because (Will) Hoskins was agreed. The only one was (Will) Buckley.

“Things can happen this week. When you are talking to players and explaining to them how important pre-season is for me and them then that is a consideration for the players as well.

“They can wait, wait, wait but there is a moment when they need to make a decision.

“The league starts later this year (August 18), which means we have got until the beginning of July when everybody will be starting.

“We are coming back a little bit earlier. It will be a very easy comeback, an extra week before we start the hard work.

“By the beginning of July another three, four or five players would be good. We’ve got a good chance of that happening.”

The Argus revealed on Saturday that Albion face competition from at least one other un-named club in their quest to re-sign Vicente, who is still in Spain at the moment.

Poyet said: “We’ve still got a great chance. I hope to have him training with us next Monday.”
