Poyet happy to see new colleague
12:00pm Monday 18th June 2012 in Sport By Andy Naylor
First day: Paul Barber
Paul Barber starts work as Albion’s new chief executive today with a ringing endorsement of his credentials from the manager.
Gus Poyet has welcomed the appointment as a further sign of the progress made by the club.
Barber was executive director of Spurs during Poyet’s spell at White Hart Lane as assistant manager to Juande Ramos.
The 45-year-old former commercial and marketing director for the FA quit Major League Soccer outfit Vancouver Whitecaps in February and has been working back in England since April as a consultant to Coventry City’s owners Sisu.
Poyet told The Argus: “I know him but I couldn’t say I know him well. I am looking forward to working with him.
“It is impressive for our club to get somebody who was on the board at Spurs and then left for a nice challenge in America. We should be delighted we are bringing in people like Paul Barber.
“Five years ago taking about a new stadium, winning League One the way we did, being consistent in the Championship and having a player like Vicente and someone like Paul Barber would have seemed crazy but now it seems normal.
“The whole situation has changed for the good and if we keep calm and keep going and keep getting better who knows the type of players we can bring?”

Can Mr Barber play up front or central midfield or even in goal? I appreciate we all need to remain patient but oh for a new signing. Just one would be nice for the time being just so as we all know activity is going on, which of course I am sure it is.
It would be nice to see some positive action regarding recruits for the squad rather than just hearing vague 'rumours' mainly about players leaving eg Bridcutt, Dunk, Hall and Noone.
So one new face might make one feel more relaxed especially as Poyet said at the end of last season he would like to get any new signings in before preseason training started and that's only a week away.
However there's been plenty of Positive action behind the scenes in the last 6 months. David Burke and Paul Barber have joined, Season ticket sales have hit 21,000 and another 5,000 seats will be available for the start of the season.

Its great to see that we are putting in place a fantastic infrastructure with very skilled individuals but equally it would be nice to see some light at the end of the Tunnel with regards to new and exciting players to match the off the pitch ambition.
i think poyet hits the key thing we should always remember, the season we had and all the good news floating around club is amazing as a fan and it is hard to forget when your in the amex on match night. For everyone who is worrying about transfers, be thankful we are a club looking to buy and expand our squad to push for higher places. There are many clubs in a far less fortunate position and who would love an administration like we have at our club.

You have to wait till everyone is available and then the best deals can come through, the euro is a big distraction for bigger clubs but it affects their willingness to loan or sell players.

I believe that the Argus reported on Saturday that something approaching 23,000 season tickets have been sold - unfortunately living in London I can't 'buy' an Argus and rely instead on this website as do many others.
However when I rang the club this morning I was told (a) they have sold 21,000, (b) they have about 1,000 still available and (c) they are limiting season ticket sales this season to about 22,000.
It would be good if the club issued a definitive statement as to what the figure actually is. Perhaps our brand new Chief Exec will do so.
In the meantime I look forward to hearing about some new recruits in the next 8 to 10 days. There does seem to be a consensus view starting with Poyet that the squad needs strengthening.
I've just seen that Poyet has issued a 'calming' statement about recruiting and hopes that 3,4 or 5 players will have joined by the beginning of July. Whilst appreciating that the season starts later this year I hope his optimism is justified.
Even Gus acknowledges that he will be nervous if the situation hasn't changed by 15 July (when we start playing friendly matches).
Finally glad to see that Poyet seems positive about the chances of Vicente staying.

Interestingly it is 4,000 higher than the 2nd placed ST sales in the Championship !
I noticed that he is a little less optimistic than Poyet about getting new players signed by the end of the month.

Yes I've read the article and it was nice to have clarity....The Eastbourne Herald apparently ran a story claiming 23,000 was quoted by the club. Either they exaggerated the figure, mis-heard or were mis-informed!
Still, 22,000 with the final 1,000 due to be sold out is superb, as is your stat on us having 4,000 more than the nearest Cham'ship rival.
We're tenth in the overall standings....that is stunning and shows the magnitude of the potential we are finally, finally being able to unlock.
UTA!
P.S I'm London based too! You should pop along to a seagulls Over London meeting some time. Usually very interesting.
