Sussex win again to go clear at the top

Scott Styris hits out for Sussex Scott Styris hits out for Sussex

Sussex completed a third win in a row to go clear at the top of the FL T20 south group.

Joe Gatting scored 45 not out and Chris Nash 52 as the Sharks posted a total of 209-6.

Some big hitting from James Foster and Mark Pettini gave Essex brief hope but they fell 19 runs short on 190 all out.

Luke Wright and Nash got Sussex off to a flying start after skipper Mike Yardy had once again won the toss.

They put on 86 off 44 balls for the first wicket with 21 runs coming off a single over from Graham Napier.

Wright smashed sixes off Napier and David Masters as he carried on where he left off against Middlesex before hitting a full toss straight to long off having made 40 off 21 balls.

Nash completed his 50 off 38 balls before being stumped for 52 by a fine piece of wicketkeeping by James Foster.

Scott Styris (36) and Gatting (45 not out) ensured Sussex did not lose momentum as they posted their second highest total in T20 cricket.

Mark Pettini scored 44 off 31 balls but Essex were unable to keep up with the run rate as they reached the halfway stage at 74-2.

Some big hitting from Greg Smith (39 off 26 balls) and Foster (47 off 20 balls) brought Essex back into contention but they fell 20 runs short with Chris Liddle taking 3-35.

These comments are always so much quieter when Sussex win... Prior commitments prevented my attendance but it sounds like another excellent performance.

Duh. You should know by now that sports fans are always more vocal in defeat than they are in victory, although I know this is something you find very hard to accept. As I said in a post before the start of our T20 campaign, Sussex should be one of the favourites for this competition. They have some big hitters and quick scorers. Indeed, you can argue that they are better suited to this format than the Championship game. When Rusty Scupper (or whatever his name is) finally shows up, and Prior is able to play a game or two, they should be even stronger. The tricky part is getting through the quarter-finals, which makes a home draw imperative.
