Poyet urges Vicente to return

Vicente has not returned to Albion for the start of pre-season training Vicente has not returned to Albion for the start of pre-season training

Gus Poyet has called on Vicente to respect his contract and hammer out his differences with Albion.

But the Seagulls boss is not sure when he will see his absent playmaker.

Vicente was still in Spain as pre-season training was turned up a level yesterday.

The former Valencia star failed to agree a new deal with Albion and is unhappy they activated an option extending his contract until next June.

Vicente’s agent Victor Oñate has declared his client will not return to Sussex until differences with Albion are sorted out.

Poyet is reluctant to comment at length on the saga but last night told The Argus: “When a player is under contract you expect him to be here.

“Then there can be unhappiness, there can be decisions, there can be negotiations, there can be problems, there can be discussions, there can be 100 things between a player and a club.

“That’s normal because not everything is always perfect. But we will deal with it internally.”

Vicente is being strongly linked in Spain with a move to Elche providing his agent can engineer a way out of his commitments at The Amex.

Asked if he expected to see Vicente at Albion at any stage, Poyet added: “I’m not sure. I cannot answer that question.

“There are too many things in the press. The only thing we know is he didn’t turn up and is showing willingness to leave.

“But it is out of my hands. He’s under contract.”

The job of a reporter is to report the news. This is the latest development involving one of, if not the, most talented players to play for Brighton. An interview with his manager.

I'm assuming you'd prefer this than made up stories?

If there was any news to report, don't you think the paper would run the story?

And if you are really annoyed/bored/offend
ed by another story about Vicente, you could always, I don't know, not click on the link? And then not comment on the story?

Just throwing that out there...

Maybe it was a mistake to give him the impression that the team was being built around him especially when it was not certain that he would re-appear. His past form shows that he is not exactly reliable and he is probably enjoying being the centre of so much attention and feeling that we need him more than he needs us. Surely it is time to stop pandering to his obviously over inflated ego,let him wallow in sunny Spain while we get on and get our squad up and running. Once our amazing Medical Team got him sorted last season he could have walked on water....if he tried it now he would surely sink to the bottom as he has also done in the popularity stakes. Certainly time to move on and enjoy the rain, wind and cold of an English summer and look forward to better weather in the winter and a Seagulls team doing us proud. Ask yourselves two questions: 1)In spite of his ability do we really want him back? 2) If he does re-emerge will we feel the same way about him?

1. No, at least not under a 'forced' return because I don't believe his heart would be in it for us. However, if he demonstrated a total change of heart, then yes I'd be happy to see him in the team. (But I'm not holding out any hope of that, to be honest).

2. At the moment....'No'. He has already put a pretty sour taste in my mouth. Having said that, he could dissipate that sour taste by showing a commitment and a willingness to be here. Then I could change my thoughts about him.

In summary, I agree with all who have said "Let's move on".

I also believe that if he ever came back he wouldn't be properly motivated, and would be a sideshow that all the other players would be affected by. Calderon was a little different but that was a silly saga too, and Vicente only wants to play in Spain it seems. All that said, there was quite a long story last year before he signed, supposed to be going to the Premier League or a variety of other English clubs, and some of this nonsense has to be agent driven.

As I said on another thread earlier today, clearly Valencia knew what they were doing when they let go last year.
Remember Valencia knew exactly how talented he is and yet they released him.
A question.
If he is not training properly how long will it take Vicente to get in the right frame of mind and fully match fit to play ?
Now as others have said lets get those new players signed.

As good as the dagger is, it would have been dangerous to have built a team around him anyway, given his 'injury' problems... better to have all this now than a month into the season. we don't need to build a team around any single player. we need a team, and everyone playing for each other. so, while we enjoyed what vincente brought to the albion, let's show a bit of respect to the other players in the squad and what they have brought to the club. there is a lot of talent at the albion and if GP can add another couple of experienced players then we will be fine. and, who knows, we may even find a new hero... for me, we already have plenty of them in blue and white stripes already... up the albion... and onwards too.

Glenn scored more league goals than Rickie Lambert in 2010/2011.
We parted company with Murray, and Saints retained the services of Lambert.
You know the rest.
Finding an effective striker at the right price isn't easy, and whatever his scoring record at Crystal Palace, (though he did score the winner in a League Cup quarter final against Man-U), he knew how to score goals for us.
I'll get over him as soon as we recruit a 20+ goals per season striker.

I would sign Murray in an instant. We have not replaced him and there is no indication we will. He is just the sort of player we need up front in this division, big, strong and with reasonable skill. I have never understood why Gus let him go so easily. Bring him back, irrelevant of the Palace connection!
Agree totally Mark, quietly delighted that his career at Palace has been less than spectacular, it would have been hard to see him continue the success he had with us. Nobody can deny that without his goals we would not have won the league.

Obviously he hasn't found the CP experience inspirational.

no pace, average technique and we have a chairman and manager with bigger intentions. Forget him he's a backward step and that's got nothing to do with palace. Move on.

Well I hope that those 'bigger intentions' translate into something solid very soon as with the exception of CMS we have nothing up front as yet which will terrorise Championship defences! In the absence of a quality striker Murray would have done a very credible job at this level. Just look at what we tried last year, Billy Paynter and Sam Vokes. Who would you have, them or Murray? Anyway, as many say, he like a certain other player is in the history books now and I fervently hope that Gus has a decent striker about to swear allegiance to the club!!

Surely as Vicente is under contract so if he has not turned up for training he is absent without leave so stop his pay. If he then returns to UK to play keep him warming the bench until January 2013 when it is freezing then play him. In the meantime let the youngsters like jfc and Ben Dickinson who want to play for the mighty seagulls play and make vicente have to fight to get his place back . Well done Gus on the way you are dealing with it, you get my vote. Seagulls !!!! Ps any news on us signing new players ?

No idea why posters are continually criticising Brian Owen The Argus. The update on this story is based on an apparently new interview with Gus and it is only right that he should report it. If there is no other decent news stories coming out of the club, then he has to run with this. People would soon moan if there were no updates on this story and in the circumstances it is important the club issue updates. Naylor and Owen are expected to provide lead stories for the paper every day with 99% of them anticipated as being Albion related. If you don't want these stories, don't read the website.

Ah! how about,
"Albion's home game against Leeds United has been chosen by Sky Sports for live broadcast, and as a result has moved forward to a Friday night"

OR

"As part of Albion's ambition to become a Category 2 Academy in accordance with the Elite Player Performance Plan, the club is looking to appoint an Academy Goalkeeping Coach."
Yes I saw those two news items on the official website.......not sure being live on Sky is really anything to go into lengths of prose about nowadays and as for appointing an Academy goalkeeping coach.....what is the fan most likely to click on, an update including quotes from a new interview on the Vicente story or an article on the clubs intention to appoint an academy goalkeeping coach? If it was the latter, there would probably be no more than a dozen posts on here. People can moan all they want on this one, but the Vicente story continues to be news and probably will for a good while yet.
oh and yep, agree with this. Have criticised in the past but this is a bona fise story. academy goalkeeping coaches and sky fixtures are not headlines. Vicente is. End of...
academy goalkeeping coaches and sky fixtures are not headlines

They are when you follow all aspects of the club or when you live outside the Sussex catchment area or abroad as I do, especially the news of Albion live on sky and what games.

as for glenn murray's celebrations when he scored against us last season??? what celebrations. he just turned to the halfway line and walked back. he behaved a lot better than the fans around me in the north stand who spent the entire match heaping abuse on a player who helped us get up from league one. we need to show more respect all round, chaps.
My mistake Kwaidam, the feelings towards that club run deep in this one.

Vicente is a professional footballer who on past performance needs a pre season. He's a mug not to at least train with us otherwise he could end up with more issues.

If Vicente wants to go then let him, he is undoubtably the greatest player Brighton have had in the past decade or so but what is the point of him coming here if he is unhappy?
Do we really want another first half of the season with him like we did last year?
As for Glenn Murray, well it was plain to see that we missed him last season and he would of been an ideal strike partner for CMS as he cannot play up front on his own as his touch is awful!
