Contract talks can wait as Vicente returns
5:00pm Monday 9th July 2012 in Sport By Brian Owen
Hotshot: Vicente goes for goal against Hull last season
Albion today welcomed Vicente back into their ranks – until at least the end of the season.
Seagulls boss Gus Poyet has confirmed no contract talks are planned until his Spanish playmaker has settled in again.
But he is thrilled Vicente has opted to return to Brighton after resolving what were described by the club as personal issues.
The player is under contract until June 2013 after Albion activated a one-year option on his existing deal They had hoped to announce a new contract some time this summer after he shone in 2011-12. That will now be put on hold.
But the key news for Poyet is that Vicente is back after missing fitness tests and then the first week of pre-season training.
Poyet said: “The important thing is he is back. I can’t let you know about a new contract. We are just trying to plan him coming back.
“I spoke to him on the phone and we didn’t even talk about it (a new contract).
“I knew the problem he had. We were always waiting. Sometimes it goes one way and sometimes it goes the other.
“It was a personal issue and we are, as you can imagine, very happy.”
Vicente’s partner recently gave birth to their second child.
The player was being tempted by an offer from second-tier Elche which would have allowed the family to continue living near their home city of Valencia.
Elche were hoping Vicente would engineer a way out of his deal at The Amex in time for training today.
However those hopes ended on Saturday evening when Albion confirmed Vicente’s impending return.
The Seagulls are still five weeks from their first competitive match of the season, although they open their series of friendlies at Maidstone this Saturday.
Poyet added: “We will discuss the best way for us to add Vicente to the squad slowly.
“He is only one week behind really because the previous week was only fitness tests.
“That is something the doctor and the fitness coach will take care of.
“My part is easy because it’s the practical, technical side. We will do it slowly.”
Vicente’s agent Victor Oñate believes Saturday’s announcement represented “a happy ending” and said his player will continue under his current terms.
He added: “Vicente is not playing for money or the contract. He is playing for Brighton because the project there appeals to him and he wants to help them into the Premier League.
“All he is thinking about is coming over and playing and hopefully Brighton are happy with how he plays.
“If the two parties are in agreement, we will definitely agree a new contract. If not, no problem.”

A lot of talk about not playing at this level etc. A lot of 'CMS was top div 1 scorer' etc. Rhodes is a VERY promising player, who could just possibly blast us into the premiership (i'm kinda what's in the glass, not how full). We've signed experience, time for some promise that's ready to step up.

That gives me the impression that he's going to work hard and try to impress, rather than sulk around. Sounds like he wants to be here, do a good job and THEN talk about a new contract. All in all, it's sounding like a good way to bring him back. I think we can have reason for optimism.

If he spends too much time out of action at the start we might just as well cancel his contract and let him go back to Spain.

The Rhodes story is balls.
Scored all his goals in the first division and everyone here has been banging on about needing: "Premiership quality."
So I can't understand why some are getting so excited at the prospect. I'm not criticising the lad, he's clearly a decent player but for me, he's another CMS and surely we need a complimentary striker not a clone?

If we're looking for potential, we've got Torbjorn Agdestein.

Unrealised potential, because of few opportunities.
Does your friend who works at the Amex wind you up often?

With Vicente one hopes there will not be another easing him gently period which lasts until the last dozen games of the season. He needs to be fit and ready to go. He has enormous talent and is, I believe, the one who is abl t unlock CMS goal scoing potential with passes through the channels You saw glimpses of that when he was playing at the end of last season and that is what we need week in week out.
If he spends too much time out of action at the start we might just as well cancel his contract and let him go back to Spain.

Rhodes has HUGE potential and at 21 would be a great investment. He will score loads if he remains in The Championship and free of injuries.
I've called for us to go for him several times on here, although do I think he'll join?.....probably not!

Like Captain H, I've hoped we might go for him for a while. Last summer, I think we would have succeeded and I think he would have taken us into the playoffs. I don't think he'll come this year and our loss will be someone elses huge gain.

Rhodes at £5m? We'd be lucky to get him for that - believe it or not, it's a snip! The difference between Zamora and Rhodes is that JR bloomed earlier and already has aound 80 goals to his name at roughly a ratio of a goal every other game. He's also done it over the last 3 seasons.
Like Captain H, I've hoped we might go for him for a while. Last summer, I think we would have succeeded and I think he would have taken us into the playoffs. I don't think he'll come this year and our loss will be someone elses huge gain.

I read to very intresting articals recently 1 by Fifa claiming that transfer fees are down across the board by 33% and the other by the Peterborough chairman stating that players had to except the finacial reality and wages are dropping like a stone. So rather than comparing £5 million with BZ 10 years ago see who was valued at £7.5 million last year

If Rhodes does go anywhere it will be to a mediocre Premier League side. Talking of Reading, I see they have just signed Nicky Shorey from the Baggies. Apparently he was supposed to be on his way to the Amex until the allure of the Premier League reappeared. So, that's one more off the list...
