Scott Styris has agreed to stay at Sussex to play in their FL T20 quarter-final against Gloucestershire – but Rusty Theron will not be returning to Hove.

Styris initially signed for the group stages but has extended his contract to cover the clash with the Gladiators on Tuesday July 24.

The former New Zealand international played a big role in helping the Sharks top the south group, scoring vital runs against Middlesex and Essex and bowling at an economy rate under seven. The 36-year-old missed two games after dislocating a thumb but returned for the final three group matches.

He will also be available for the three CB40 games Sussex are due to play before their T20 quarter-final, starting in the top of the table clash against Warwickshire at Edgbaston tomorrow.

Theron made his only appearance for Sussex against Middlesex at Lord’s before returning to South Africa for personal reasons.

Sussex had hinted the seamer may return for the knockout stages but coach Mark Robinson said: “We would only bring him back if there was an injury to one of our seamers as he has not played any cricket in the last few weeks.”

Robinson is also hopeful Matt Prior will be able to play against Gloucestershire saying: “It depends on his fitness and the will of Andy Flower (England coach). Matt is very keen to play but England have a massive series against South Africa.”

Tickets for the quarter-final clash with Gloucestershire at the PROBIZ County Ground go on sale tomorrow at 9am to both members and the general public. To book call 0844 2640206 or go to sussexcricket.co.uk.

Great news about Styris, but desperately unfortunate for Rusty. Could have been a very useful player. Oh well...

To be frank, I'm much more concerned about Prior's availability. With him, I believe we can win the cup. Without him, I'm not so sure. I know he is under contract with England but to my mind, the fact that certain players are only available at certain times makes a mockery of the competition. The county game really is the poor relation these days but I guess money talks.

The county game is and forever shall be a proving ground for the national side. I wouldn't be surprised if the ECB, spotting how many runs Prior is scoring and how quickly, find themselves embarrassed by his continuing non-inclusion in the England ODI/T20 side and stop him from representing us again.

PS: I don't so much mind the players being made unavailable, it's when only a few are and the others are allowed to carry on playing that annoys me.

The county game is gradually dying apart from a few clubs, poor crowds, poor weather and lack of quality players who are taken away for England duty. There needs to be a rethink because without the counties there would be no England side. I really do hope Prior is made available for the T20 final stages, with him we have a v good chance to win.

I think there are a lot of very good county players but several perennially poor counties - Northants, Leics, Glamorgan etc.

"perennially poor counties - Northants, Leics, Glamorgan etc.”
(Leics are current T20 champions though...followed by a v poor T20 this year)

agree re Prior - key to our T20 from hereon in (far far more important than Theron, would have been a waste of time/money getting hm back fro the QF)
