Poyet keen to keep win in context

Gus Poyet is keen to keep Albion’s friendly win over Chelsea in context.

But he was delighted and encouraged by the Seagulls’ 3-1 defeat of the European club champions at The Amex today.

Albion came from behind to win with goals from man-of-the-match Vicente , impressive Ashley Barnes and the returning Andrew Crofts .

Frank Lampard put Chelsea ahead.

Boss Poyet said: “I’m very pleased but I don’t want to take this as more than it really is.

“It was a very good game of football against top opposition.

“We found ourselves for long periods, especially in the second half, without the ball which is new for us.

“We had to defend, we had to do the ugly part of the game.

“We suffered but the boys did the basics.

“I’m very pleased for them. It was a difficult game for them.

“When they saw the (Chelsea) team listed in front of them and all the names, they started thinking about that.

“So I’m pleased for them.

“We started well until the goal, which we conceded too easily. But it was a very good reaction.”

Poyet opted not to field Wayne Bridge, Craig Mackail-Smith and Kazenga LuaLua, all of whom have minor niggles or tightness.

He added: “I would say if it was a final two of them would probably been out there.”

Bodes very well. I can feel the excitement building already. Last season was the nearly season but we might have to get ourselves strapped down this year to avoid any excitement induced injuries. IGWT

Ok so it was only a friendly, but if you put it against last years Amex opener against Spurs, this game shows how the team has grown since last season.
The signs are there that we can better last season, so I for one think that this match is the marker for a great chance of a promotion push.
Some people will say 'yeah but Chelsea were only half trying', but I'm sure RDM won't be that pleased with his team's inability to break us down.

Roll on season 2012/13....... can't wait!!!!

Good performane today against a pretty mediocre Chelsea side in spite of all the big names being on show.

If Vicente plays and produces that sort of performance week in week out we will do really well. Good to see Crofts get a goal which will do him good in settling him back in.

Worried about Buckley pulling up. One of those moments when you think .......mmmmmmmmmm...
..... this may be serious.

Enjoyed it in the North stand today, made a nice change. Language though left a lot to be desired, especially with kids around!! Far too much gratuitous swearing.

I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come from the Goldstone, Priestfield and Withdean. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for football left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the kinds of palace brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering.
I say to you today, my friends, so even though we faced the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still had a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the Brighton dream.
I had a dream that one day this club will rise up and live out the true meaning of its existence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident
I had a dream that one day in the green hills of Sussex the sons of former workers and the sons of former mortgage payers will be able to sit down together at the Amex.
I had a dream that one day we would have a 30,000 seat stadium, fully covered.
I had a dream that international players from many nations would make up our team.
I had a dream that the European champions would come and be taught a lesson.
I had a dream that men will one day live in this city, where they will be judged by the colour of their shirt not by the content of their character.
I had a dream today.
I have a dream that one day, down in Lancing, with its vicious nimbys, with its council having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there by the airport, a top class training facility will emerge.
I have a dream today that the Albion will again play in the top flight, where we will go to the Emirates, Old Trafford and Anfield and teach them a lesson.
I have a dream today.
But there is something that I must say to the fans who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palarse of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place. Let us seek to satisfy our thirst for the premiership by drinking from the pints of Harveys bitterness and the pies of love.
I have a dream today that many cups and shields will sit in our trophy room, along with our 1st division title and the championship title.

Great result, professional footballers dont like to lose, so mediocre or not one of their players alone was worth more than our squad. Thats puts the result inton perspective. Gus knows the right things to say, but if we dont make the play offs as a minimum he will be disappointed, as will I. Fortunately I know we will make it, going down the bookies tomorrow and betting hove park on it.

I see on the club website that Poyet also pays tribute to Barnes. I hope this means he'll continue to play him in his best position ie up front not midfield.
On the CMS front Poyet seems genuine in wanting to find the right partner for him so he can score 'More than 20 goals a season' but may have the solution in house with Barnes now the midfield seems potentially to be 'sorted' with Crofts return.
Of course we will still need another striker.

Who have Barcalona built their team around?
Some might say it's Messi, but Spain do ok without him.
Do we need to build the team around a big target man who can hold the ball up?
There has been talk of us building the team around CMS, while at the same time, apparently, building it around Vicente.
Is it possible that Crofty has been tempted by assurances that the side will be built around him?
You are a brave man, Pte, to suggest that the team be built around Ashley Barnes, but he is as good a candidate as any.
What I hope to see in the new season is 11 accomplished individuals who can play effectively as a team, without over-depending on any single player.
They will play with exhilerating fluidity, and be adept at changing in style and personnel, depending on the opposition.
And finding a player to build the team around will no longer be relevant.

Pte and Tug509 I suspect that Poyet has 'switched horses' as it were and is building the team around Vicente which makes sense to me if he is.
He also clearly wants players who not only 'buy into' his playing philosophy but are capable of executing that. Players such as Vicente, Crofts, Greer, Bruno, Bridcutt and Barnes amongst others illustrate this.

A little off the subject but, just read Croftys comments on the official site. Its brilliant to hear a player talk so enthusiastically about our great club. And hes spot on Barnes was superb...as were they all.P2BAS
Yep, instead of building the team around CMS, build it around Barnes and find a partner that suits Barnes rather than CMS. Any suggestions?
Build a team around Barnes!!! You can't be serious. You cant build a team around Vicente given his injury record, despite his unbelievable talent. How about not building a team around anyone, but having high quality in as many places as we can afford and solid players everywhere else.

At the Fans forum Gus was asked about his early season comment about builidng his team around CMS, but responded by talking around the issue saying he just wants to get the best out of the squad and everyone has a contribution to make. He wouldn't be drawn on CMS going bto Leeds - but I didn't he would let on anyway.
I don't see the point in building a team around one or two key players - what happens when one or both are not there?
Too soon to worry about whether we have all the players we need. I'm more concerned about players still on the books that we don't need.

Maybe building the team round Barnes is an exxageration to make the point that more should be done to promote his goal scoring attributes. Barnes does look a top goal scoring prospect given the right support, he does score good goals Liked Buckley too

That's funny, I have that same dream. Didn't see you around.
Charlize Theron....need i say more.
A tad Dylanesque methinks. You can be in my dream if I can be in yours. On a more serious note, everything that I saw on Saturday gives me every confidence for a successful season. On CMS it would appear from the performance against Chelsea that he could be surplus to requirements. I know he always gives 100% plus and runs around at 100mph but that could just be the problem in as much that the supporting players are unaware where he is. Seems that they did very well wiyhout him. I hope I'm wrong and that he stays for he is one of the most genuine players that I have seen in an Albion shirt.

Just like to thank fellow contributors for their comments, re my earlier post. And for those who where wondering what I was on, beating Chelsea was enough, oh and a celebration pint of course. UTA
My critisism arises from me being around in the 60's.
Maybe if you'd based it on the Gettysburg Address....
