Vicente's new role

Gus Poyet is considering a new role for Vicente in the Championship.

The Albion boss started his Spanish star in a new central attacking berth in Michel Kuipers ’ testimonial last night.

Vicente converted a penalty as the Seagulls were held to a 1-1 draw by top-flight Reading.

Poyet is still searching for a new striker and has Craig Mackail-Smith and Will Hoskins out injured.

He said: “We are trying to get the best from Vicente.

“Until we get the target man, the one who is going to play between the two centre-halves, we are looking for options.

“It doesn’t mean we are always going to play like this but I think he is dangerous in there.”

Poyet added: “We got what we wanted from the game in terms of fitness and a few players had 90 minutes.

“That is what we are looking for.

“The understanding is there for periods.

“We have to maintain it for 90 minutes but that will come.

“I am sure we are better today than we were before the game.”

Wayne Bridge again missed out with a muscular injury but Poyet said he has a 99% chance of playing against Crawley on Friday.

I hope this new role includes scoring regularly, and supplying assists.

No change then... AB's stats will take a serious hit if Vicente's new role also includes the pens... I think the new role will be very successful if only in the short term. Fingers crossed...!

Bruno was class last night. He and Vicente were on a different level to the rest of the field.

Also Kuipers pies were awesome, I would've had one for breakfast if I had the chance!

Why not, he is that good although his runs from deep will be cut out IF he is playing higher up the pitch which isnt a problem only a plus as we have quality on the wings. I think we will get a top top centre foward but we still have three weeks to go in the window and alot of players hold out until the very last minute toi decide where to go. Not great for the preparation but im sure it will be worth the wait.

My guess is Argus told to keep lid on progress reports for fear of blowing the gaffe on other stuff…

Couldn't agree more Albion in Staffs! I believe CMS wants out and we are waiting for other strikers and other clubs to make up their minds...IMO. McCormack, Jackson, Maynard could all be an option for GP if CMS does go but we would still need another striker with more presence...a Cole or Hesky type player. Anyway GP gets my backing whatever...IN GUS WE TRUST!

Well you would think if McCormack was close to signing a new contract at Elland Rd then the Yorkshire press would be on to that...and that ain't happening! They probably have a sniff off what is going on and they (Leeds)are also wanting to sign George Boyd and we all know who he used to play with??? Jigsaw and pieces spring to mind! IMPO...I would rather have Maynard and another!

Agree with AFIL. Im personally convinced CMS is staying for the long term. The sooner this mysterious striker turns up the better for everyone! Briefly chatted to Tomasz Kuszack last night, he got annoyed about conceding the goal at the end of the game. He was a good guy and chatted for several mins. Sorry, but didn't ask about striker situ tho!! SEAGULLS!!!!

The striker/CMS situation will hopefully be sorted in the next few days, sooner rather than later given the fact we only have two fit strikers. Vicente offers another option as Poyet has stated but it might not be the most effective way of deploying him.
I wondered why Buckley wasn't in the squad last night. I recall hearing something about an injury in the Chelsea game (the reason why Noone came on in his place .apparently). Any info anybody.
I hope we're are not going to see a recurrence of his injury woes.
I see that Poyet says that it is 99% certain that Bridge will play against Crawley. I reckon it's 50/50 that the 1% chance will come up and he won't play (if you follow my logic).

Looking like a central striker in on a permanent deal and CMS off to Leeds followed possibly by a loan to cover Hoskins depending on Gus's faith that he will ever be fit. Gus said last night that he has the numbers but wants to change some of the faces (words to that effect)

Bridgey once featured in 113 consecutive Premier League games for Southampton, Conelli98.
Apart from a hernia and Knee problems in season 09/010 when at Chelsea, he has largely remained free from injury. I expect that he, along with CMS, will figure in the majority of this season's fixtures.

Actually Gordongull I don't.
I just think that it's too expensive a risk to play Bridge on Friday if he's' not fully fit. I simply believe that the economics will win out.
If he plays 40 games his cost per game is about £15,000 (assumes wages, NHI etc £600,000). If he plays 20 it doubles to £30,000 and were he to only play 12 as Conelli98 speculates it increases to £50,000.
As Farside mentions and as reported on BBC Sport, Poyet is not only looking for a striker but he is also wanting to make changes to the squad - quote 'I would like to change a few players'.
Interesting to see what changes might be made and which players might move on. Any thoughts ?
Is CMS going one such change ? Since Poyet feels it is unlikely that CMS will play against Swindon is that because it would be too soon after recovering from injury ? Or is it because any club acquiring his services wouldn't want him to be 'cup tied'. Just speculating.
Intrigued by Captain H's posting that the signing of a striker is imminent. Depending on when and whom we might get a pointer to the CMS situation.

Having gone last night and seen the game, I think it's clear for all to see who is and who isn't of the quality we need to press on. Vicente was the stand out performer and some of the balls he put in the box were crying out for a big number 9 to put them away. I'd suggest there were about half a dozen chances like this alone. Praise though could equally go to half a dozen others. 4 of the back 5 were spot on and of the midfielders 2/3 arev top 6 performers. I'm excited about this season and should GP get in another couple I think a little wager may be in order.

Lots and lots of talk about who Albion may sign to lead the line. On a previous thread someone suggested Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea. Would potentially be a great 'loan' signing for a season. Tall, strong and very skillfull and already a full international. But, at this stage unlikely to command a regular starting place at Chelski. Any chance?

The fact that there is lots of speculation about CMS doesn't mean he isn't injured. Gus will part company with him if the price is right, the player wants to go, and he has a replacement lined up.

Your promotion odds question was taken in the spirit intended. My original point was really to illustrate that Poyet's 99% might have been an optimistic appraisal. My response was really to say that whatever Poyet might hope for the decision he will ultimately make will be based in reality and the economics of the situation.
Reverting to CMS, I hope he stays and think he will. Letting him go, unless it is for a decent fee, would be admitting that we overpaid for him which I don't believe we did.
What we need is the right striking partner to play alongside him, ideally sooner rather than later.

Carlton Cole has a year remaining on his contract, is on £28,000 a week, and would cost around £4.5 million.

Very well put,my thoughts as well.As for us making no serious effort to resign GM,what a load of garbage,Gus offered the man the best contract any Albion player up to that point had ever had.And he`s response was to procrastinate for some time, before condescending to turn his back on us.Only to come back a short while latter and ask if the contract was still on the table, and as he did when hendrie did the same thing to us Gus said no.For him to return to us it would have to be on bended knee and one mighty big apology.Do you think in honesty he would give us a second look if it was`nt for the magnificent Amex.UTA

My first reaction is: I think not. His heart wasn't with the Albion when he left, so why would it be now? However, if he returned and hit the net with the same consistency he did previously, I'd be happy with that. I'm still on the fence though and not too excited about the prospect of him coming back. But then again, I'm not the manager...I'll leave it to him as he knows what he's doing.

20+ goals per season strikers don't grow on trees, and if you've got one, you should make every effort to hold on to him.
Talk of bended knees and apologies is nonsense.
Have you never heard of protracted contract negotiations?

Crofts coming back is a whole lot different to a Murray return! GM must of known of the rivalry between clubs but decided he would be better off in South London( not going to put my fingers through writing their name). IMO...thanks for the effort and goals Glenn but your loss mate! Interesting to see Kazim Richards training at Blackburn!

Yes i have, have you heard of mucking people about? And as for 20+ goal a season striker`s,we signed a 35+ goal a season striker CMS.Now how many goal`s did GM score last season.Gus did everything he could to hold on to GM,but because of those 20+ goals you speak of ,he thought that he could dictate terms, this was not protracted contract negotiations, but an inflated opinion of his own worth and good old fashioned greed. And at a club that brought him to where he was from rochdale and the bottom of the pile, worse still knowing full well the club at the time could not afford his demands, but had he stayed loyal would undoubtedly made it up to him in the long term...Have you not heard of loyalty.UTA

I've seen the same rumour but same website are also stating CMS having medical at Leeds tomorrow. If that's the case we still need another striker!

I don't beleive the CMS rumour at all, and I will go so far as to say that I will eat my underpants if he does go. Why would he go to an unsettled club when he has a good conract here and why would we get rid of such a hard working honest player?

I'm with Gordon on the Murray front. He wasnt just a 20 goal striker, he was our link player, he brought others into the game and had a pretty big say in most of AB's goals too. I like others was not overly happy he chose Palace but there are 2 Sides to every story and I am led to believe that GP hardly rolled out the red carpet to retain his services. I'd like to see him return. He is just what we need if his attitude is right.

Gus got the best out of Murray, as he does with a lot of our players. Murray can hold the ball and win headers up front. I think it would be a good move for Murray and the Albion to bring him back.

Vicente played the attacking midfielder role against Reading. We played with no strikers (Barca style). Reading were always on the back foot whilst Vicente was on the pitch. We missed Buckley or Lua lua to add a bit more spice going forward.

Captain, every signing has been a surprise so far! You were right about Crofts, so I have no reason to doubt you this time
Why thank you.

Must say the striker named in this quite would be interesting! ;0)

Undoubtedly he would divide opinion.

Rather. It say who I've heard yet though tbh.

Re: "Chelsea possible" we are still in the frame i believe.

You have to say we have a great squad already but could be even better come the big KO!

I follow...I THINK!!! The Bridge signing is a bit of a risk, does anyone think that he will play more than a dozen matches for us this season?
Bridgey once featured in 113 consecutive Premier League games for Southampton, Conelli98.
Apart from a hernia and Knee problems in season 09/010 when at Chelsea, he has largely remained free from injury. I expect that he, along with CMS, will figure in the majority of this season's fixtures.

Ballantrrae, - B&HA are 5/1 for promotion.
Do you reckon it's 50/50 that the 20% chance will come up?
Signing would complement CMS more than replace him.

Capt, If the striker you you think is coming may divide opinion, I'm guessing the one you got excited about a couple of weeks ago is not coming now? I'm sure you mentioned on a thread how you thought one striker was so exciting that you were going to put a little bet on.

I completely agree with both of you,he`s link up play was as important as he`s goals. Not once have i questioned his ability. My only gripe is the way he treated us before leaving for them.As for the red carpet, again he was offered the best contract in the history of our club, how does that not translate as rolling out the red carpet?UTA

With GM last eason we would have got the playoffs. Great target/link up player.
Carew still not got a club also Is Ricardo Fuller still worth a shout. ?? Bobby Z won't happen at this time.
We looked a bit lost once Vicente went off against Reading.
I'd be happy with CMS / GM front line.

It is impossible to know that we would have got to the playoffs with GM lmspike.

Besides, he has still not proved his worth in the Championship. A good league 1 player, that's all.

We did offer amurray a better deal although not an irresistible one....by all accounts Gus wasnt too fussed to compromise the budget for him.

IF he is to rejoin us that would mean a) they didn't part on particularly bad terms and b) Gus would have recognised an absence of his particular strengths and qualities from the team of last season - that we missed him!

I am not a great admirer of players going back to clubs unless they have proved to be better after leaving which is the case with Crofts as He proved Himself in the Championship and contributed in the Premiership, however Murray has done neither improve or help the club he moved to.I still have this feeling about CMS being put to one side until a replacement that Gus is after comes in.As He said in an interview we have the quantity now we have to improve the Quality by replacing some of those not quite up to it.Maybe somebody could refresh my memory if I am wrong, but did CMS come before Vicente suddenly became available which changed the way Gus then wanted the team to play
