Late goal sinks Seagulls
4:50pm Saturday 18th August 2012 in Sport By Brian Owen
Albion were sent to defeat by an 85th-minute strike from Jay Simpson at Hull today.
The substitute turned in a cross from Joe Dudgeon to settle an even tussle.
That outcome was harsh on the Seagulls, who had chances to go ahead in the second half.
Summer signing Sone Aluko went closest to a goal in the first period on his Hull debut.
Aluko, who had a free role behind target man Nick Proschwitz, went outside right-back Bruno and then fired a terrific angled drive which beat Tomasz Kuszczak and crashed back off the crossbar.
Kuszczak pushed away a 25-yarder from Robert Koren soon after.
Albion, missing Vicente due to what the club described as “a minor niggle”, were also inventive in attack.
Andrew Crofts flashed their best effort just past from the post from 25 yards following a patient build-up.
The visitors went even closer on 50 minutes – shortly after Kuszczak had tipped over a Paul McKenna drive.
Wayne Bridge charged forwards down the left, released Craig Noone and his cross was headed against the bar by Craig Mackail-Smith.
Noone, Ashley Barnes and Mackail-Smith all shot narrowly off target as Albion, without an away goal since March 24, sensed they could grab a breakthrough.
But then a clever pass by Koren unlocked the visiting defence and got full-back Dudgeon clear.
Kuszczak brought him down as he crossed low but ref Stuart Attwell played an advantage and Simpson turned home the loose ball.

It's good that we created that many chances but only goes to high light our need for a striker. I think of the 18 4, possibly 5, fell to CMS.

To my mind we deserved a point but I fully expect us, as time goes on, to pick up 3 points from a match where we deserved none

Exactly the same as last season, dominate possession, can't find that quality ball and cannot hit the target. One lapse of concentration and punished.Keep hearing the same story about why we can't get a striker,if we don't then mid table, simple as that.

If getting a striker was as easy as you seem to think GP's job would be easy. Think of all the clubs that want a quality striker, not just in England but the whole of Europe. Then think of all the clubs that have more money than we have.
Consider what we are looking for, not a lad, not a young man aged maybe 22, we, like others, are looking for someone in their mid to late 20's. He must have a proven track record of scoring. We want a physically strong striker, someone who can hold the ball and release it at the right time. All these qualities are desired by all managers at home or abroad. Quality up front will always came at a cost and there will always be competitors for these players when and if the hit the market.
It is, 'the same old story,' it's just not the one which you are thinking of.

No improvement at all from the end of last season. With this team we will end up mid table unless we get two players in with fighting quallity because we have very few at present.

Panic when we could have taken all three points, we are a decent striker away from being a real threat for promotion.... However when gus brings in that player next week.. We will forget Hull away, and concentrate on taking the club forward. Everything is going in the right direction, no side wins every game.

POSITIVES. We seemed to have quiet a bit of the play and 18 shots is up on last season's average. CMS clearly ring rusty having not really featured pre-season. However he was getting into the right positions and once 'sharper' should score goals. Kuszczak had by all accounts a great game making a number of first class saves. I have just read the Yorkshire Post report which said we didn't deserve to lose.
NEGATIVES. Vicente injured again. We now haven't scored away from home since 24 March 12 ! In 180 minutes of competitive football so far this season we have yet to score.
Although this smacks of relegation form, the squad looks stong enough, that with the right additions both upfront and in midfield, that things will be turned around. We could be pushing for the play-offs if we sign the 'right' striker and also a 'powerhouse' midfielder.
The key therefore to the Seagulls season, whether positive or negative, lies with the acquistions that Poyet, Burke and Co make in the next 12/13 days.

Just back from the game , for most of the 2nd half it was The Albion who looked likelier to pick up all 3 points. Speaking to Hull fans after the game they would have been pleased with a point and thought CMS was the best player on the pitch by a long chalk.
Narrowly losing against a side which seems to be rated fairly highly has got to be encouraging when it was without Vicente and we are still hoping for additions.

Just looking at some of theses post, we have some miserable sods as supporters. Never happy or comment if we win, but as soon as we are beaten, out the woodwork they come with the same old dribble. Personally, except the lapse of concentration for there goal the players performed well. Look forward to Tuesday

Listened to BBC Sussex and it seems we could have taken the three points if the finishing had been better. Not too bothered about away games in fact i would like to see a B side for these matches to give our top players a rest, they would train to keep possesion and aim for a draw, this would enable us to be an entertaining and high scoring team at home which would give us a top half position and ensure our season ticket holders will stay with us.

y one of the hardest most competitive divisions in world football. You said you are not bothered about them and that we should play a B team, suicidal strategy, and one that would almost guarantee relegation.
