Norwich in for Albion star Macca
3:30pm Thursday 30th August 2012 in Sport By Andy Naylor
Link: Craig Mackail-Smith
Albion striker Craig Mackail-Smith is a target for Norwich City.
But a deadline-beating move to the Premier League club is unlikely unless other deals fall into place for the Seagulls.
They are refusing to comment on whether Norwich have tabled a bid for Mackail-Smith, although the Argus understands there is interest from the Canaries in the former Peterborough hitman.
Norwich chief Chris Hughton, asked today if they have made an offer for Mackail-Smith, said: "There will always be speculation and rumours about numerous players and everything we do we try
to do in the correct way, certainly behind the scenes.
"Anything that's out in any domain is speculation and something we've learned to cope with and continue to cope with.
"There are a lot of players we admire and anybody we bring in has to be the right player for this football club."
Mackail-Smith, linked with Leeds earlier in the summer, has been left out of the Scotland squad for World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Macedonia next month after missing their recently
friendly win against Australia through injury.

Hard to think that we're losing Nooney but to lose CMS as well within a few days, without a replacement is not going to help us.
All said and done though - this is modern day football and money (read agents) will always have the last say!
Up the Albion!

What the bl**dy hell is going on? We've been in the hunt for striker for the last 3/4 weeks and now we are losing our 1st teamers with no new signings.
Time will tell but if we havent boosted our squad by 11pm tomorrow night, I think we will all be massively disappointed...

He is, without doubt, the most frustrated man at the club. Playing alongside Holt at Norwich would be a great move for him. He would get service and score lots of goals.
If he leaves it will be Poyet's fault, pure and simple.

i I know this might sound crazy but, the search for a striker has been influenced by CMS. The whole idea is to buy a guy that would help bring out the best in CMS. We are not looking for any striker, it must be one who compliments what CMS gives us.
No way would sell him, he is what we are building one of our main attack formations around.

i really don't want to lose cms, noone could have a good work rate but in the end he just couldn't provide in terms of crosses and through balls. CMS is on another level from noone in terms of impact in the team, he applies so much pressure on the opposition and creates many of his own chances. With someone to assist cms he would score more.
And Chris Hughton's quote is hardly committing himself to anything.

Most strikers have a partner, they feed off each other and know what is going to happen without even thinking. The partner might not be an out and out striker, often it's a attacking midfield player who creates that special relationship.
As you now get to see Brighton play and I don't, well I did see a few games last season, you probably know just how isolated CMS has been, he certainly was during the matches I got to see.
Gus has identified the problem, he feels he knows the solution and I am not going to question his judgement, he knows a lot more than I do about the game.
If the plan is to play with just one striker up front them yes I agree with you, CMS is probaly not the right man for that attack formation, but that is not the intent.
How many goals did Wardy score feeding off of Spider, they has that special relationship, and I am not just talking of the knockdowns when Spider would climb above the defenses we faced.
When all the trading has been done, when every team has it's players in place, including Brighton, then we can watch and see just whose deals worked and whose didn't. If Gus can secure the right guy to work along side CMS I feel sure that his 20 goals will come.

Noone and Bergkamp (Loan) out
Probably Orlandi (?) from Swansee in.
This is where we will see if David Burke can win his spurs (no pun intended).
Just as well Poyet has someone helping him with whatever 'deals' are in the pipeline both in and out, otherwise he (Poyet) would be completely swamped.

This presents a potential scenario where the club are trying to sign 2 strikers (3 if they wish to replace Bergkamp as well) when they have had difficulty, as Poyet has acknowledged, in signing one !
Still hoping for at least one more midfielder in addition to Orlandi, a CB and, as I keep posting, an attacking midfielder as cover for Vicente although of course Bennett (still dreaming) would do that brilliantly when not featuring wide on the right side of midfield.

CMS; by no means a disaster if replaced but would be interesting to see him with better option up front and of course he can play on the wing in a three but not done deal...
Orlandi seems to be on his way and is a Gus type player and maybe 'fit' into the current Dicker role (?). Not a major piece in the puzzle though. Maybe just an option for what i presume is a nominal fee.
Second guessing the current window is not for the feint hearted.
Where our striker is coming from is anyone's guess. West Ham looked to be off loading but now that they've given up on Carrol and Maynard's on his way to Cardiff? Cole would be the type of player you would expect them to hold on to.
The Bobby Z dream is still that. I think he is very much part of Hughes's plans and despite our sudden influx of additional funds, would still be outside the budget. However, if he did want to come back, now would be a very good time. He'd be a god here...
Midfield is still on Gus's mind according to the club website. Limited cover for Bridcutt and Crofts is a concern. We never did get that box to box midfielder (even though Crofts is a great signing).
It is going to be a very interesting 30 odd hours. And for all those who are satisfied with our lot, i point you once again to the stated ambition for the season: TOP SIX. Both board and manager have been quoted. I will be satisfied with less but i would prefer that fingers cannot be pointed regarding the integrity of the club regarding it's intent and it's ability to deliver. To be fair there are seemingly tight controls on the finances and rightly so. But we've got a great chairman and a good manager. If all we can do is compete at the higher end of mid table then fine. Aim higher by all means but don't raise expectation unnecessarily... The truth of the matter remains to be seen. Whatever the outcome, we've come a long, long way together.

Something that I find interesting, but I am easily pleased, the official team photo included Noone.
Sparrow and Vincelot not included because we knew that they have zero future with the club, so would Noone's inclusion mean that we didn't expect him to be sold, just a thought.
Nearly 9pm UK time and to be honest I really thought that we would have completed more deals than we have by now. One in and one out from the first team setup is not much to write about.
Tonight, tomorrow and tomorrow evening and that's it, and to my way of thinking we still have players to aquire and players to move on.
Gus has a match to prepare for on top of everything else he is having to do. If he has the time I would like an update on the injured, but I won't press that.
Man I would love CMS to bang one or two in on Saturday, apart from the probable win if he did, it would be one further step to shutting up the doubters.

Something has changed in the way we are doing business, it may not be us that has brought about the change but the change is there.
Gus manages to sign players with not a single word getting out untill the deal has been done, think of Noone's leaving.

Poyet bought all these players and they all seem to be going or don't fit his 'system'. Surprised TB is not questioning the money he is spending and his managerial skills.
The players he bought (bought is past tense) took us to tenth in the division, last season, (last season is past tense). The goal last season was to finish having given a good account of ourselves, we did that.
The stated goal this season is top six or better, (this season is present tense).
The players he bought last year did what was expected of them. Noone going is as much about taking a great offer as it is about the fact that we have more players than needed for the role he played.
Yes one or two of last years signings will go but the main reason for that is that we now have superior players, players that we did not have last year and could not get last year. Who do you want, Bridge of Vincelot? It is not that they are not decent players, it's just that they are nowhere near as good as their replacements.
Bergcamp has left on loan and I doubt that he will get a contract from Gus but you must remeber what Gus told us when he signed him, this players is destined for the development squad. Not every player will develop as quick as other and some may not develop at all, but you don't know untill you give them a chance.
TB, I am sure, rates Gus higher than any other manager in our division, I would bet you a lot of money that he wouldn't change him for any of his peer group within the championship division.
And you call yourself a fan, man you don't want to know what I would call you if it wouldn't get me barred from the site.

There reportedly three new players coming to Brighton, all three have been named but I don't think any of them have been confirmed. Even if we get all three I don't think we will be done.

I feel certain that CMS goes nowhere unless some stupid offer is made and if the lad agrees to go and I don't think a stupid offer will come.
I doubt that much sleep will be got by some at the club tonight, the deals will keep on coming, or at least trying to come. Bergy gone on loan, clearly zero future with the club unless getting regular games brings him on real quick.
I would have thought Sparrow and especialy Vincelot would have gone by now, I have to think that people are talking to us about those two.
Pretty sure that we will not have to wait untill tomorrow to hear more about whi is ocming in. . ,
Pretty certain something will happen though just when I will be driving (tomorrow) on Holiday in France ! C'est la Vie.

Arrive Saturday afternoon after staying tomorrow night en route. There for a couple of weeks which means I miss the Wednesday game.
International breaks are useful especially for integrating new players into Poyet's playing style.
No doubt on Saturday once I am online I will find out who has left and who has joined the 'Gus Bus'.
Still no news or rumours even about a CB.

Reckon CMS will stay unless a truly silly offer comes in.
We won't lose money on him as we'll be unwilling to sell and therefore Norwich or any other potential poachers will have to pay through the nose to meet our valuation.
Although he says that if the right deal comes up, he would do it, it does not imply he would push the boat out to land CMS.

Maybe Crofty can convince him to stay.
