Albion after Bothroyd

Interest: Jay Bothroyd Interest: Jay Bothroyd

Albion are interested in out-of-favour QPR striker Jay Bothroyd as they attempt to end their long search for a target man.

Rangers chief Mark Hughes has made it clear Bothroyd, signed by previous manager Neil Warnock, has no future at Loftus Road.

Former Arsenal prospect Bothroyd, 30, had a spell in Italy with Perugia before re-igniting his career with Cardiff and earning an England cap.

The 6ft 3ins powerhouse scored 41 goals in 120 Championship outings for the Welshmen.

Good player at this level, has a nasty streak that is missing at this club..
The clear out has begun, two more close to leaving..? Hopefully it's not cms and Vicente!

Bothroyd seems to have 'gone off the boil' recently but a lot of managers have clearly rated him and if anyone can resurrect his undoubted ability, it will be Poyet. Not convinced that he is the only major signing before 11pm tomorrow - perhaps I'm being over optimistic?

suede27 says...

No. No. No. No. No

If Poyet thinks JB is the answer to our impotence up front he's even more useless than first feared.

Hardly prolific, a red card waiting to happen. Plus he's 30.

If Vicente does go and it is back to Spain and is as rumoured due to family reasons then he goes with my thanks, respect and well wishes.

I have a real worry that CMS will go and even worse that he will really do the business at Norwich.

I think the club have let him down badly in the way it has attempted to play him.

We never made the best of his pace.

I can't see how you can play Bothroyd and CMS together anyway, hence my belief the club will let him go.

The Spaniard we appear to be getting is good on paper, but another fragile one! Won't get many games out of him.

My seat is near the front of the West stand up near where the players warm up and all the time LuaLua is warming up and shooting he is grimacing. Just makes me wonder just how fit he is.

We have too many fragile players!!!

Now at the risk of being called defeatist or worse - Bothroyd fits the bill how exactly? Other of course than he's injury prone - he's had a history of being a pain to managers - never lived up to his potential and his scoring as I commented in a previous post is 1in 5.5 games. he's not going to set anything alight unless he's got a pack of firelighters. As a lifelong fan I can only applaud GP-MT-TB for everything they've done - but if we're losing both CMS and Noone i think we need to replace them with something other than 2 injury prone players from QPR and Swansea. I hope I'm right in thinking that Gus is a master of smoke and mirrors and we will finish up with a couple of half decent replacements.
Be biting my fingernails till this window closes.

Seems like the type we need right now, good for a two year contract I guess, have to think that as good as this signing would be, well good in my mind, I still think another front man is needed.

The talk of Vicente leaving comes from where, I don't discount the possibility but I would like to know the source.

Could Bothroyd be our 'Jason Roberts' in the same team as CMS?
He's 4 years younger than Roberts, had a decent scoring record with Cardiff, and we could use a 6' 3'' powerhouse in forward positions.
This is the most interesting name to have surfaced, (Zamora and Berbatov not included for obvious reasons).

Perhaps Poyet is hoping that Vicente and Orlandi can job share. With any luck at least one of them will be fit at any given time.
Both speak the same language and both started out as wingers.
Having Bothroyd, if he were to join, would provide the 'physical presence' up front that we seem to lack. I think CMS would benefit from that always assuming CMS stays.

Now Carroll is on his way (allegedly) to West Ham, I would have thought Carlton Cole was a possibility...but then Maynard is apparently going to Cardiff so does that potentially leave West Ham a bit short of strikers.
Very surprised that some postings are a bit sniffy about Cole. Surely a perfect ally for CMS?...but are we going to lose another great club man?

We have some money to spend we don't have to spend it, would rather keep hold than waste it on players the wrong side of 30 or injury prone we have taken a gamble on some of those already, if we take a gamble let's have a go at some promising lower league players and develop a team for the future, these big signings work out costing a lot to secure and a fortune to keep, let's not forget more than half our team were League 1 players not so long ago there has got to be some budding bobby z's out there whether here or abroad a good player is not necessarily good because of the price that someone says he's worth IMO

Heard also we may successfully clear some of the "unwanted's" with one in particular not ID'd publicly by Gus being amongst them!

Really hope we hang on to our "wanted's" though.
