CMS stars as Albion win away

Craig Mackail-Smith scored two wonder goals as Albion won 3-1 at Burnley today.

The striker connected with a volley and an overhead kick to silence Turf Moor.

Gordon Greer’s 86th-minute header wrapped up an excellent away win – and atoned for his earlier unfortunate own goal which put Burnley level.

Mackail-Smith scored Albion’s first away goal since March to give his side an eighth-minute lead.

It was a super strike by the forward who was linked with a move to Norwich in the last days of the transfer window.

Liam Bridcutt played the ball in from wide after working a quick free-kick with Gary Dicker .

Greer knocked the ball down and Mackail-Smith, from just outside the box, flashed a sweetly-struck right foot volley past the left hand of diving goalkeeper Lee Grant.

That moment of magic brought the Seagulls their first away goal in 485 minutes of Championship and Capital One Cup action.

They held their lead comfortably throughout the rest of a quiet first half, despite losing Andrew Crofts injured on 39 minutes.

Albion almost doubled their lead after the break when Kazenga LuaLua flashed a shot across Grant and somehow found the gap between the far post and the incoming Will Buckley, who had replaced Crofts.

But Burnley were level on 58 minutes as Junior Stanislas’ inswinging cross flicked off the head of Greer and drifted inside Tomasz Kuszczak’s far post.

Kuszczak kept his side on level terms with a superb tip over of Ross Wallace’s 25-yarder.

Then Ashley Barnes held his head when a well struck volley flicked off a defender and flashed just wide as Grant watched.

Grant did well to keep out an angled Mackail-Smith drive after Albion's best move of the game from near their own corner flag.

Mackail-Smith, though, was on target in the 78th minute with a terrific overhead kick right in front of the 477 away fans from Bruno’s cross after Buckley kept an attack alive by the corner flag.

Kuszczak kept the lead intact with a reflex save from Austin’s header.

Greer headed a late third at the far post after Bruno had won a corner flag which was taken by Andrea Orlandi, making his debut off the bench.

Great result, creating chances, who is going to dropped with 3 more signed and left out.? Plus one more coming in next week? Squad is very solid , however front line is still not good enough allowing for injury .. Especially considering Hoskins is always carrying some injury.

Excellent performance! Early days but 4th spot!

I think the new recruits will now generate real competition for places - there is top quality all over the park.

Forget the 'target' man. Let's do it the Spanish way! 17 attempts at goal away from home - that's a bit different to last year!

I need to lie down - great stuff!

Training over the next couple of weeks will be a pleasure for the squad and this result is what will make it so.

By the time our next match comes around all should be fit, depending on Crofty that is.

Should we change a winning team, I say yes, do we start with all our new players, maybe not, do we bring in Vicente, I would start him.

Brighton have to be about the squad and not the starting eleven. Today showed that strength on the bench is a must. Had Noone not gone KLL would have been on the bench, Noone goes and KLL starts and has a great game. Orlandi comes off the bench and sets up a goal.

We now have a squad that will challenge every team we play be it at home or away. FA cup matches on the horizon, a time for the squad to show it's quality.

Great day. . ,

Being where I am I get to read the BBC text commentary and for the life of me I can't recall Bridge being mentioned more than twice. Did Burnley decide right from the get go that they would get passed him so they went the other side or down the middle.

Last season we started well but then went off the boil for a spell and ended the season quite strongly. With the players we have now I think it fair to say that we have no reason to expect us to off the boil this year.

I think that we will see a seamless transition of players in and out of the starting eleven as Gus plots the downfall of our opponents. Every team will have that little something or that stand out player that needs to be countered, we now have the squad to counter anything.

Likewise managers will be striving to control us, try to stiffle CMS and others, but our squad can change our formation from week to week and in mid game.

In all honesty does any club we will face have a back five, I include our keeper, as strong as ours.
With all the options we have in midfield, players and patterns of play, can other teams really expect to dominate us in that area.

CMS will trouble every defence, he keeps scoring and the opposition will have to double team him, space for all our other guns to fire.

Top six as a target, nah lets go for automatic promotion.

Maybe it will not be a case of CMS being left out for Dobbie. Maybe Gus will play them both. Or maybe CMS can now have a rest occasionally?

We needed at least one more striker to not only create competition in the squad, but to have other quality options on the bench.

Great result. All football supporters are passionate and biased, so don't be too hard on the Burnley lot. Apperently Gus's touchline antics upset them last season, but I know who has had the last laugh now! Why worry about an injury to Crofts with the squad we have now. What I like is that we are not totally reliant on one or two star players. As others have said we now have a strong squad. I assume the possible loan player will be the cover needed at centre back ?

We played a different style last season, we are still evolving and developing as a side, I was critical of Barnes last season, hands up he is looking much more honest and compliments the side well. Always been a CMS fan, never doubted his ability, it's a game of opinions and that's why it divides opinion and always will. The constant is that with a few exceptions,we all love this football club on this site. Just enjoy it and remember the journey has just begun.

We did not play this way as we did not have the quality so had to pack the midfield with much less talented players. Now we have an incredible squad - Gus etc have done an amazing job building the team, keeper makes a massive difference, full backs have to be the best in the division, and as for last night's new signings - incredible. It's a long season, but I can't see the boom and bust of last year. Automatic promotion is very very tough in this division, but feels like we will be right up there pushing.

Another good post, Vegas. You're absolutely right. We've now created a number of great options, interchangeable depending on situations and the nature of the opposition.

I can already see improvements from last season.

We are creating far more chances EVERY GAME with a more direct style (NOT HOOFING I hasten to add, but a flowing passing game where our movement and interplay is finally at the level I've been dreaming of these past three / four years), CMS has come out a different player with the better interplay, movement and service - how confident does be look now?!! and the solidity of our firmed up back line has also added a new dimension to our play up AND down the pitch.

Now with more class coming in and an exciting but limited winger the only departee we are indeed starting to look realistic auto promo candidates.

It's a big call for sure but a genuine POSSIBILITY now.

Great to hear, Billy.

It's the same old story with Burnley. Niggly fouls unpunished, yellows given to us for little or nothing, their Neanderthal fans whinging that we are play-acting, terrible refereeing and vile and abusive behaviour from the terraces.

I wonder if our ability to get the result from this ugly fixture this time is a sign of a promising improvement to go along with our more progressive attacking play this term? Great stuff!

Whilst I don't want to pick faults in your comments (who was booked for opening their mouth?) the referee was very pernickety. The two bookings for Brighton were unavoidable but Trippier should have been booked for a similar act of blocking a player who was running past.
.
On the plus side, CMS was unplayable, not just his two exquisite finishes (which were both applauded by the Burnley fans sitting near me!) but his all round play, good linking, great movement and defending "from the front".
.
All in all a deserved Brighton victory, it may have been different if we had taken the good chances we had (good saves by Kuszsak) but once we were 2-1 down there was only going to be one winner.
.
All clubs have their "so called fans", I look forward to coming down to Brighton to listen to the "angelic" chants that will be coming our way:-)
