Albion came within a whisker of losing goal hero Craig Mackail-Smith to Norwich at the end of the transfer window.
They now face an anxious wait to see if the Canaries renew their interest and meet the asking price in January.
The Seagulls rejected an undisclosed bid from Norwich but were sweating on them returning with an improve offer right up until the final hours of the window closing on Friday night.
Boss Gus Poyet revealed to The Argus: “It was very close. There was a moment when you get a phone call and someone tells you – I don’t want to say who – they are going to do it and then you start to think ‘Please no’.
“There was that tension all the time. Probably at about six or seven o’clock we just decided we were not taking anything but we didn’t get the call anyway then so we didn’t have to make that decision.”
Poyet’s relief multiplied as two stunning strikes by Mackail-Smith helped Albion to a 3-1 win at Burnley on Saturday.
The Seagulls’ £2.5 million record buy also scored twice in the previous game against Barnsley and is bound to attract more transfer attention when the window re-opens in the New Year if his red-hot start to the season continues. Poyet said: “The problem is there is a value and it’s very difficult to say no, especially to players like Macca. They want to play at the highest level so the easiest way for me as manager and the players is to get promoted together.
“You need to let people have the chance to play in the Premier League so it’s very difficult if they (Norwich) make a very, very good offer, to say no. I’m pleased that they didn’t.”

However I did wonder when I saw the Report of the Albion being interested in Tuncay whether he was a potential replacement for CMS.
The signing of Dobbie both excites and intrigues since he isn't exactly the type of target man Poyet was saying he wanted. Is he a substitute for Hoskins ?
After all the activity on Friday I am still left wondering if players such as Sparrow,Painter, Vincelot etc will be going out on loan. Assuming Poyet is still up for it I am anticipating a CB being brought in.
Finally I have seen one or two postings speculating on Vicente (why ?). My only comment is that perhaps Vicente might be allowed to return to Spain when JFC's loan to Oxford ends in January.
Waiting until 14 Sept and the Wednesday game could be boring.

I wonder how the player himself felt while Norwich were in for him. If he felt any dissapointment at not going it didn't seem to affect his game at all!. I have a feeling that if it goes well for him and the club is well placed at Christmas he could be reluctant to leave, especially as he had that opportunity when he chose to come to Brighton.

Too many good things to write about, as far as new signings goes, Bruno is superb, Bridge is great, Kuszsak fantastic and Orlandi looks special from what little we have seen. Hope Crofts makes a speedy recovery. The rest of the old lads, keep up your great work.
We have many testing games ahead but we seem to have the ammunition to keep us in it with a new found consistency and fluidity to our game.

Im in agreement with others that i dont believe that Norwich will be an option for Macca coming january. I would expect that come january there will be no more than 6 league positions between us. If Macca goes good luck to him but i do think that he has enough sense to make it a worthwhile move for his career and not just a slight salary increase.

He continues to bang them in and for some crazy reason we concede more than we score and we don't get promoted, he gets sold, and rightly so.
There are teams that we can expect, but we may be wrong, to be nearer the bottom of the prem than the middle, Southampton and Fulham come to mind, Villa too possibly. Clubs in that position, above the drop zone but not safe, could come in with a big offer that we would find hard to refuse.
There will be clubs that are above middle of the table, the way they are going Liverpool could be one, but need more fire power, they could make a big offer.
There will be clubs that are just outside of a europe placing, they might see CMS's goals as the key to the door and make a big offer to buy that key.
The only teams that will not pose a threat as to buying CMS will be those very near or at the bottom, why go there only to end up back where you came from.
Come January, and if his goals continue to flow there will be a move on him, the size of the offer, the team making the offer and our position in the table will be the deciding factors.
If Liverpool are mid table and feel they need him, they slap 10 million on the table, he goes.
If Spurs are near to a europe placing and need him, make the same offer, he goes.
United, City, Chelsea or Arsenal, any of the top teams, if they want him come january they will get him no matter where we are in the table. The good thing is, if CMS and the team has us in the top six or near automatic promotion, the amount of money clubs would have to pay for him means that we will have a good chance of buying a top striker to replace him.
Gus will not stand in his way, Tony Bloom will not be able to turn down any offer near 10 million. CMS will not choose to join a club near the drop zone but will instantly say yes to any of the top clubs.
The best deal for us would be to say yes to a big offer but only if we do not get promoted, if they want him they can wait for him. If any club wants to remove that clause then they must pay more to get him.
The very thing we want him to do for us is the very thing that will probably take him away from us.

I agree without a doubt that all players have ambition to play in the Prem. However they have to decide how confident they are of the team they are in or their belief in the team that are interested in them.
A promotion battle may be preferable to a relegation battle with a small Prem outfit at this stage of a career. Top 6 Prem side would clinch a quick deal, but Norwich would take more thought.
Who knows, there are many factors to consider but CMS will always show good integrity of a situation.

I think Liverpool are going to struggle this year, for me they did not do enough business in the transfer market. A middle table finish would see the manager gone, Gus gets us promoted and he becomes a target of the Liverpool board, even if we don't get promoted I still think that there will be clubs that want him by the end of the year.

If all goes to plan we will be firmly in the top six, maybe even top two, Brighton will have no plans to sell anyone.
The question will not be, do we want to sell, but what it might be is, can we say no to an offer based purely on the numbers being offered.

As our hopes are realised each week, as we win our games and strive toward promotion, Gus and the board have to start preparations for what might be to come.
If we are looking like very strong candidates to go up tentative talks will start, feelers will be put out.
As fans we have the luxuary of living for today, Gus and the board don't. I would lay a large bet that come october, and maybe sooner, Gus will be planing his next move, th emove to consolidate our promotion drive and part plans should we get promoted..

Also i don't think Liverpool would touch Gus if Rogers fails, as it would really be a case of employing another unproven up and coming (been there, done that). Plus i really think that Gus would only go if the 'right offer' came in... As he has said many times. Spurs are probably our biggest worry but as Bish said: not now, plenty of time for that later.
As for the 'next move'. I think even Gus will wait and see how this all works out apart from the stated intent of a target man and a center (!!!) back whose nessesity and urgency also reamins to be seen.

HAs about 13 channels, will probably be able to see the Sheff Weds game a week on Friday if you cant get to the Amex.

After a 3-1 win, I'm disappointed in the Argus for peddling a non-story when we should be enjoying a decent performance and disappointed in Gus (who normally gets my vote) for sounding so dramatic..

I agree with Bish its far too early to be talking about losing Gus,but i dont think it will happen.What manager could resist the prospect of basically building a club from the bottom up to the top.When Gus gets us in the premier he will have a team that has climbed from the foot of league 1 to the best division in the world,from an 8,500 athletics track to a state of the art 30,750 stadium( who knows maybe even more in the future) with some of the best players available looking to come to us.Brighton & Hove Albion will be his baby so to speak,getting us into europe would be the next step,i cant think of another manager who has ever achieved this with one team,that alone has to be better than going to Spurs for instance and picking up where someone else left off.UTA

I agree with Bish its far too early to be talking about losing Gus,but i dont think it will happen.What manager could resist the prospect of basically building a club from the bottom up to the top.When Gus gets us in the premier he will have a team that has climbed from the foot of league 1 to the best division in the world,from an 8,500 athletics track to a state of the art 30,750 stadium( who knows maybe even more in the future) with some of the best players available looking to come to us.Brighton & Hove Albion will be his baby so to speak,getting us into europe would be the next step,i cant think of another manager who has ever achieved this with one team,that alone has to be better than going to Spurs for instance and picking up where someone else left off.UTA
