Hammond says sorry to Albion fans
9:00am Wednesday 5th September 2012 in Sport By Andy Naylor
He's back: Dean Hammond
Dean Hammond has apologised for the goal celebration which has overshadowed his return to Albion – but insists he is a changed man.
Hammond left the Seagulls for Colchester in controversial circumstances at the end of the January 2008 transfer window.
He subsequently joined Southampton and angered Albion fans at Withdean by running along the touchline cupping his hand to his ear after scoring for Saints in a 2-2 draw on April Fool’s Day 2010.
Hammond, re-signed on a year’s loan, told The Argus: “It was 100% heat of the moment. Obviously, looking back on it I wish I hadn’t done it. I never meant to offend anyone.
“Things went on at the club that people don’t know about and I left on a difficult note really. We had just won at Wembley a few days before and I was on a bit of a high as well.
“I regret it now. I didn’t mean to do it and I could never envisage myself doing anything like that again.”
Some fans have reacted negatively to Hammond’s return on internet message boards and vowed to give him a hard time.
“I kind of expect it, because what I did was wrong,” he said. “It’s up to me to prove them wrong. I’ve got to work hard to get into the team but when I do and start playing it’s up to me to prove them wrong and hopefully they will back me.
“But I have no problem with them being like that. That’s their opinion and they are allowed to feel like that and I understand if they feel like that.”
Hammond could make his second debut for Albion in place of the injured Andrew Crofts against Sheffield Wednesday at The Amex on Friday week.
The former captain from Hastings was 24, single and childless when he left the club but is now a 29-year-old married father-of-two.
He said: “My life has changed massively. I’m married now and have got two children. That changes you. I have grown up a lot. I feel as though I am a different player and a different player to what I was when I left.
“I’m just really happy to be back. I always wanted to come back, especially the way the club is now.”

Very impressed that Dean has now apologised; it takes a big man to do that. For me personally, it wasn't required, but I know a minority of fans wanted an apology, so now they've got one.

I noticed some very over the top negative comments on Dean on various websites, and thought them to be really unnecessary. Everyone should move on and not allow an isolated incident from the past to fester. It is never good to hold a grudge, because we all make mistakes in our lives in this imperfect world we all live in.
Welcome back Dean, I hope that you make the stay a permanent one eventually.

I wonder if, with the signings we have made, we still need a target man up front.
I wonder if the center back will arrive before the target man.
I wonder if the board are negotiating a new extended contract with CMS.
I wonder if the new training ground will open before the end of the season.
I wonder if any of our players, other than CMS, were targeted whilst the window was open.
I wonder if you know that Sky television has just done a deal to show MLS matches on UK tv.
I wonder if many of you sit at your computer just wondering. It's 3am for me and I have mothing better to do, other than to wonder about the pain I am in due to a hugely swollen gland on the side of my face.

I don't think he's being 'big' in apologising at all, just sensible. He could hardly turn round and say "I'm glad I did it and all Albion fans are w*****s" could he?

I cannot understand booing ANY Albion player at anytime, whether the intent is to move on afterwards or not. That is rather immature and insane, and ultimately worse than any offence supposedly caused by DH

I bet you hold that many grudges, you must be the life and soul of any get together.
Why on earth should a Saints player apologise immediately, for actions which did not physically hurt anyone anyway? Get real, I would rather someone show passion and commitment to the club they play for, than regret taking part in a game against their former club.

I have always been taught to own up to your errors and make amends the best way you can, I think the Hammond issue is a tad different to everyday life.
Football is all about loyaltyand as the Brighton fans were loyal to Hammond when he was with us they deserved to be shown some respect, clearly Hammond didn't do that.
You tell me, who should feel the most insulted, Tony Bloom, the man that gave us the Amex, or the guy on the terrace at Withdene. Hammonds actions were directed at the fans and the fans are the club.
Tony Bloom has forgiven him, he would not be wearing the stripes if he hadn't. I think a silent protest is sufficient, his name gets announced and if you still have issues with him just keep quiet.
Hammond, when coming onto the field for pre match warmup should take his shirt to all four corners of the ground, kiss the shirt and make the heart sign with his hands. Once done that should be that.
If Hammond sets up a goal are we not going to be pleased. If he scores a goal are we not going to cheer. If he gets cut down are we not going to shout in protest.
He pulls the shirt on and he is ours and all that he does for us will be payback enough..

And so it cometh to pass in the great city of Fairmile (a obvious reference to Falmer) that the evil one with porcine features (Hammond) shall defeat the ranked forces of the Priest (a clear misspelling of Poyet) who hath the fresh bloom of youth (Tony Bloom). There shall rage a terrible battle that leadeth to the calamitous fall of the bird from the sea (can a reference to the Seagulls be more clear) and its decline into a great horrible mire (a perfect description of the conference). The land shall burn and the walls of the city shall be breached (the sale of the Amex).
We must all act now to prevent this. I suggest a mass meeting on the level at 8 o’clock sharp tonight where we can burn suitable effigies and chant endlessly until moved on. It seems the only sensible thing to do.
(Disclaimer: None of the above is, of course, true. Dean Hammond is a lovely jovial cheeky chappy who only has the best of intentions towards the Albion. It is also possible that the fictional extract from Nostradamus above could have other equally valid interpretations.)

What none of you seem to realise is that Hammond is more than likely the reincarnation of Hitler or perhaps Polpot. Wake up and smell the coffee!! I think he is pure evil, and has a master plan to come back to the Albion, then get Gus the sack and take over as player manager. He will then systematically get rid of all of our best players, and lead us back down the divisions until we are in the conference. He will then somehow persuade Tony to sell the ground and we will be homeless again (having said that Mick McCarthy could probably do all of that without even trying on one of his good days). Is that what you all want, coz that’s what’ll appen! I think you can find absolute proof of this in the writings of Nostradamus, where he says: And so it cometh to pass in the great city of Fairmile (a obvious reference to Falmer) that the evil one with porcine features (Hammond) shall defeat the ranked forces of the Priest (a clear misspelling of Poyet) who hath the fresh bloom of youth (Tony Bloom).

My guess is that the same people would like to see him injured, maybe miss the rest of the season.
This group of, 'Brighton fans,' clearly want him to fail, and by doing so not contribute toward our push for promotion.
Brighton are so lucky to have such dedicated fans. I just wish that we, the not so loyal, could see the error of in ways when we say that we want Hammond to succeed. When we hope to cheer as he puts the ball in the back of the net or enables another to do so.
Yesterday I was told by a poster on here that I was wrong to suggest that Vicente has now become dead wood. I was being flippant, well he maybe right, but I could never think in the way that some of you do. I am a fan with an opinion, and opinions can be countered, some of you so called, 'fans,,' are more interested in your own childish feelings than you are the success of the team you claim to support.

The above comments suggest that the majority of those who required an apology from Hammond are now satisfied, and have moved on.
Any individuals who believe that the chip on their shoulder is more important than the badge, should consider this: If you boo Dean Hammond, you are also booing Gus and Tony Bloom, as well as giving the opposing team and their fans a huge psychological advantage.

If only cupping his hand to his ear was all he'd done that day, without telling all and sundry in the north stand to eff off.
He's only belatedly apologised out of pure self-interest, because his career hasn't worked out at Southampton. And that's because he's a very average player.
So this argument doesn't really work. I guess it is mainly about him being superceded by better quality players in the move to the premiership

Beckham came here and put butts on seats, his name is known all over the world, and you can add to that the extra revenue the club got from their sponsors.
Kean is here now, he and Beckham work well together.
Now could Bridge create the buzz of Beckham or Kean, I doubt it simply because he is a defender.
The game here is still young but in many ways is well established. The americans like instant gratification from their sports, you only have to look at the big three to see that.
You and I can easily get excited about a great defender, the americans, well they just want goals.
Bridge would make good money here and his career would be extended by as many as five years or so, I just don't see him setting the world on fire as a star player who everyone wants to see play.
Galaxy, New York Redbulls, Seattle or the White Caps, all would take him in a heart beat. ,

When you hear the vitriolic and spiteful outbursts from some supporters every week, questioning the birth or professional ability of players, I feel that it's pretty hypocritical of some 'fans' to pick out what admittedly was unsavoury behaviour by a young man, albeit several years ago, whilst continuing to use that same language to harangue players for not living up to their expectations.
Eric Cantona was a hero when he spoke out with his donkey kick as a message to all the cowardly moronic fans.
Some of our fans even abused one of the silkiest skills ever to wear the shirt - Richard Tiltman - one of our true greats. That just shows how thick some fans are. Fortunately they are in the minority.

Welcome home Dean. Some of us love your sense of humour.
I did think Cantona a hero though when he kicked a moronic fan, he was a Palace moronic fan so obviously deserved it.

He should not have come back and I hope that the form of others means that we don't see too much of him.

But if you do see alot of him, if he does score and or set up goals for the team, will you cheer then.
Will you feel glad to have him here if he scores a goal that gives us a win or brings us level if we are one nil down.
Is your dislike of him strong enough for you to be able to say, I would rather see Brighton lose than have to watch Hammond score.
If you and Chrisso get what you wish for, a season where Hammond fails, you will be happy, no true fan of Brighton can be happy when a player wearing the stripes does not help the team get promoted.
Your comments clearly show that you are putting your feelings above the success of the team and that, to my way of thinking, is wrong.
I guess you would be really happy if Hammond were to be injured for them you would have a number of weeks that you don't have to watch him play. Crofts is injure, Vicente is injured and if Hammond were too, do you not think that would hurt our chances. How can you think the way you do and still call yourselves true fans.

It was all that was needed and well done Dean for doing the right thing!
I can now properly say: "Welcome home!".
