Somerset pull off remarkable win at Hove

Somerset completed their second highest run chase as they pulled off an unlikely victory against Sussex on the final day at Hove.

Somerset resumed on 155-4, still needing another 241 runs to win but achieved it with plenty to spare before tea.

James Hildreth anchored the innings with an unbeaten 101 and shared in an unbroken partnership of 166 with Peter Trego who made a quickfire 89 not out.

It was the third highest run chase against Sussex in the county's history and means Somerset have climbed above them into second place in the division one table.

Hildreth extended his fifth wicket partnership with Alex Barrow to 80 in the morning before Steve Magoffin finally struck with the new ball.

Magoffin got one to lift and leave Barrow who edged to Prior at first slip after making a useful 40.

Wickets had tended to fall in clusters in this game but not on this occasion as Trego joined Hildreth to take Somerset towards their target.

Hildreth moved to his 50 off 108 balls while Trego took the attack to Sussex as he reached his half century off just 46 balls by sweeping Monty Panesar for six.

Trego went on to launch Chris Nash for a further two sixes before Hildreth brought up his century off 174 balls.

Somerset sealed the win before 3pm when Trego clipped Magoffin off his legs for four.

It's not how you start but how you finish, or so they say. Three crushing defeats in T20, CB40 and now the Champs - not to mention Murray Goodwin's "forced" departure - have rather taken the gloss of what was an exciting season.

No, still a good season. And I wouldn't say the defeats have been crushing, have they? Disappointing, certainly, but not enough to ruin a fine season.

Although the season has tailed off these past few matches and has remained unfufilled and the team do look very weary,I think most, me included, would have settled for this at the start and I must admit I thought we would have a battle to stay up.The real plus for me has been signing McGoffin who can really bowl and is a useful bat who should be moved up the order.
Disappointed in Gatting, who in my opinion has not taken his opportunity, and Brown with his fragile batting under any sort of pressure.
Hope Yardy can sort himself out and continue and does anyone know if Goddwins decision was 'forced' at all.If he turns up somewhere else I guess it will have been.

Neville, I'm only going by what Steve posted on the blog earlier today re Goodwin.

1. He's not retiring and has already been contacted by a few counties.

2. He was told a couple of months ago that he was in Sussex's plans next year only to be told on Sunday they weren't renewing his contract.

3. There is a slim chance he could be back at Sussex next year if the county fail to replace him.

I guess that's tantamount to being "forced out".

Ryfish, I use the term "crushing" in terms of disappointment rather than the margin of defeat, although all three were fairly comprehensive. Well done Sussex for reaching two semi-finals, but I'm sure they're bitterly disappointed too not to have won either of the one-day competitions or at least have reached the final.

I think the C40 defeat by Hants was particularly hard to take given that we were 159-1 at one stage during our innings.

Yep a bit of a damp squib to finish the season. I've got to agree McGoffin has been an excellent signings both with wickets and vital runs in the middle/late order. As for Goodwin i think it is time that he was released, his form has been so poor for so long that all faith dissapeared, he has been a great servant to the club but all good things have to come to an end when the time is right. Gatting is clearly not up to it and brown is 50/50, coupled with the uncertainty over Yardy's future, it could be a whole new team next year.

Yes, yet again Sussex have tailed off towards the end of the season. Could this be due to a small squad of players, hence their looking tired?

Is it a coincidence that the teams that do well are those who host international matches and therefore have bigger income streams?

Nevertheless a good season on the whole. Best wishes to Murray who has been brilliant for Sussex over the years.

Just been on BBC website and Murray wanted to stay on with Sussex but decision made by the powers to be in his own words.Good interview with John Lees, sorry to see him go and alhough a poor 4 day season he is still a better bet than a few others who continually hold their place despite continually failing.

Time for Murray to move on. Been a fantastic servant for Sussex, but clearly 'gone over'. Need two quality batsmen next season, and decent all-rounder. However, thought we were relegation certainties in April,so well done Sussex.

'bruce beckett' if you're going to get the facts wrong at least do it with your own ones rather than feeding on information from somedbody else (erm...Steve from the blog eh - who the hell is that?! Wow must be true though!!).

For what it's worth, all three of your numbered statements are complete tosh, although the first one may have some basis yet.

The Steve I'm referring to is Steve Hollis, the Argus cricket reporter. I suggest you get your facts right before commenting on a subject you clearly have absolutely no knowledge about. I suggest you do a little "fact checking" yourself before opening your trap.
