Go grab top spot, says Poyet
9:30am Friday 14th September 2012 in Sport By Andy Naylor
Gus Poyet's side could go top of the table tonight
Albion boss Gus Poyet has urged his players to grab the chance to be frontrunners in the Championship.
The Seagulls will lead the table if they beat Sheffield Wednesday at The Amex tonight.
They briefly headed affairs at the same early stage last season and the stay could be shortlived again, with most rivals playing tomorrow.
But Poyet’s new-look squad is better equipped to last the course this time and emulate the side he steered to promotion from League One as champions two seasons ago, which led all the way from late September.
Poyet said: “It proved it two years ago. When we got there we got better, so why not something similar?
“If you have got the chance to go up there and see yourself at the top, even if it is for a day or 15 hours, it is going to bring something extra for the players.”
Poyet is also happy to deal with increased expectations. Tonight’s clash is the first 27,000 plus sell-out at an expanded Amex and Albion’s flurry of activity at the end of the August transfer window has raised hopes they can sustain a challenge to reach the Premier League. Poyet said: “That brings enthusiasm and competition into the team. You need to perform and accept responsibilities as well. I like it as a professional, not only as a manager.
“I hope the players can cope with that as well. We are going to have a sell-out of this quantity for the first time in so many years so it means a lot to us as a group of people working together that we are doing things right up to now. We need to keep going and maintain that focus.”

Firstly before commenting on the contents I have been pleased to see that a minutes silence will be observed tonight to mark the Hillsborough disaster.
The most interesting fact to immerge from this report is that whichever of the two teams win tonight will go top of the Championship be it the Albion or Wednesday.
Should be a record crowd (for the Amex) tonight. I will be missing the match but hope to listen to it in France on Radio 5 Live. UTA

I see the Argus has 'posted' this report just as I was making comments under the Mattock thread one on this subject.

Interesting to see how those new signings who play actually perform.

Very flattering pic of our Gus, wouldn't want to be on the end of one of his rants. Hope we get a quick start tonight after such a long lay off, i expect Hammond to start and possibly Dobbie, watched his goals on you tube, he is a quality finisher, the Scottish Messi.

I think I am right in saying that if the match is not televised then there are no links. The best I can offer you is BBC Sport web site, live text coverage if you are an expat or the radio if you are not.
Tough match tonight, well tough on paper. Brighton will field a team with eleven players and a bench that will cause problems for Wednesday, I don't see a weakness in our squad. Wednesday are without a few options due to injury, players that would have started had they not been injured, I think that gives us an edge.
If Orlandi starts, and the first half goes well, then I would guess that both Dobbie and Lopez will enter the fray at some point earlier in the second half, who knows Dobbie might even start.

Can you honestly see our defense letting in three goals in any league match this season?
I would go for win by the odd goal for either team, this is going to be a tough test tonight. That said, if we control the game in our usual way, and if our new lads get on the field who knows what might happen. There are many unknowns about this match, my hope is that we don't give away a penalty.

If you are scoring and leaking goals at the same rate then something is wrong in your team and I would bet that Brighton find that something. Any team that racks up nine goals early in the season has to be respected, so our back four had better be awake. . .

To answer the question, 'why play tonight rather than tomorrow,' well it might be because we are away to Watford on tuesday. A two day rest/recovery period just wouldn't work for us. I need to check Watford's fixtures, let's hope that they are playing tomorrow. .

Watford are playing on saturday so we will have a extra days rest prior to meeting them on tuesday, which can't be a bad thing.
