Buckley: That was one of our best
12:00pm Saturday 15th September 2012 in Sport By Brian Owen
Will Buckley celebrates his goal last night. Picture by Liz Finlayson
Will Buckley reckons Albion produced one of their finest displays at The Amex last night.
But it did not quite earn full marks from the boss.
Buckley scored the crowning final goal as Sheffield Wednesday were swept aside.
He said of the performance: “It was probably one of our best.
“Sometimes you don’t get the goals but tonight we got the goals and the performance.
“I think the gaffer said it was about a seven out of ten at half-time because we weren’t finishing our chances.
“But in the second half it turned into an eight or nine out of ten performance. It was probably one of the best The Amex has seen to be honest.”

Watford are at Bolton today and I guess Gus will either be there or have someone there reporting back to him, I think the points get shared in this one.
It would be so easy for Gus just to name the same team on tuesday, (if no injuries) but at some point he has to give more playing time to our new signings.
What a great problem for Gus to deal with, 'do I send out my winning team of do I send out the core of my winning team with the addition of some top quality replacements.'
I bet Watford had someone at the Amex last night, I doubt the report made good reading for the Watford boss.

Blackpool have made six changes for today's match, seems a lot. Barnsley have proven difficult to beat at home, all be it just two tests.
Blackpool might win this game at a stroll but the six changes gives me hope for a draw.

As regards the remnants of the 2010/11 promotion team..
I should chew on a little bit of humble pie with regards to Dicker. I won't swallow it for a few more games but i actually thought he was effective last night and has been quietly improving on each performance. He is most at risk from the new signings and he knows it.
El Abd is just fantastic, i really can't believe the progress he has made. I got a bit annoyed with his antics at corners last season (and wind ups, albeit it helped us beat the container port chaps at home) but he's cut that out and looks assured and confident in positioning and tackle. Is this the same player i saw all those seasons ago???
Captain Greer is everything you would want and has also prospered. His lack of pace is not over exposed with our current system and he has curbed his temper. However both he and El Abd will be under pressure should we be promoted and Dunk will hopefully continue to develop.
Calderon was exposed last season and the writing was on the wall. He is a great character though and adequate cover.
Bridcutt is a worry. If he keeps doing what he's doing he will attract big bids in January ( i know this is sort of a good thing but...)
Barnes is not going anywhere and continues to delight and sometimes frustrate. He is not a pretty footballer but is intelligent (football wise) and not 'obvious'. I don't think he's under pressure all the while he's doing what Gus asks him to do. Temper sometimes a problem and does like the odd 'rake' with his studs.
Casper and Brez won't get a look in (bar injury). We have the best keeper in the division. If i had any doubts, they evaporated last night.
IF we went up, i'm not sure who would make the step up. Bridcutt for sure, El Abd and Greer but maybe not as regulars. Who knows? Who cares! If every performance is as good as last night.

Last night was a VERY good performance. Last season at home we looked great against Derby and i thought we were unlucky against Reading (plus a couple of decent but not dominant cup performances) with a decent TEAM performance but we haven't performed at this level for a long time and in football terms ( I know Charlton away a couple of seasons ago but that was not 'at this level') , i don't think we have aspired to play like this for a good thirty five years or so (allowing for the tactical and rule changes since that time).

be careful what you wish for I have many Hammers friends they are not too happy with boring 0-0 in premiership like today. although a division higher than us surely last nights entertainment at the amex was streets ahead anybody else agree or are we all looking at utopia of premiership

When you look at how the team played and then add the quality that was on the bench, it just goes to show that we no longer need Vicente. It is reported that he was somewhat put out by having his option enacted, well now he can tear up the contract and return to Spain, we no longer need to pay his wages.
There was purpose in the signings Gus made, that is clear to see, one part of that purpose was to ensure that we didn't have to reply on Vicente.
I would like to say that I would be sorry to see him leave but in all honesty I wouldn't. He has played no part in our season so far, where we are in the table has nothing to do with him, he has contributed nothing.
The only thing he is doing right now is putting a drain on our limited resources, resources we will need to bring in the players that we want.
Right now we can assume that he is not in training. When he does get back to work it will be a couple of weeks of light training followed by another couple of weeks of full training. Once that is all done, and assuming he comes through ok, he will then sit on the bench waiting to get, twenty minutes here and maybe twenty minutes there, just to help get him match fit. If he started training tomorrow it could be six weeks before he can start a game.
It's time to let him go, we just can't afford him and our results show that we no longer need him. My guess is that once he goes he will retire, his body just can't take it anymore, sad but true.

Kick a man while he's down, why don't you? The guy is injured. He probably doesn't want to be injured because he is a professional footballer that, er, wants to play football.
Don't pretend you have a clue about what goes on at the club, whether they can 'afford him' or not, or how he's going to perform when he gets back to full fitness, because clearly you haven't.
What is clear, and you might not have seen this because you are so far away, and therefore deprived of news as you like to remind us, is that numerous players have come out and publicly said how amazed they are by what Vicente can do.
Based on their comments, to say "We no longer need to pay his wages", he is "putting a drain on resources" and "it's time to let him go" is just plain stupid and insulting, to the player and the club.
How do you know "his body can't take it" any more?

My obsession is not focused on Vicente, what it is focused on is Brighton. Gus Poyet has said many times that the club does not have the money that other clubs have, we can't offer wages and deals that other clubs offer. We have to get our heads out of the sand and accept that this particular player is a cost that is not giving a return.
Gus has already replaced Vicente, Lopez is probably the new Vicente.
My thoughts on the guy have nothing to do with his undoubted talent, we all know that if he were fit and capable of staying fit for more than two or three weeks at a time he would be a tremendous asset, but he isn't and appears not to be able to.
The personal problems he has, Poyet told us of them, meant that he did not want his option taken up, this is not speculation the club told us. The guy did not want to return to us for this season. He is injured and goes back to Spain, why was he not on the Brighton medics table every day getting treatment just as other injured players are.
A year looking for a striker, do you really think that there wasn't a few targets in the last round of transfers, we didn't get one but we did manage to get Dobbie, and attacking midfield player. Sad to say but money is usually the reason why players say no.
Everyone is talking about the high quality of our performance against Wednesday and the quality of our bench, who would you leave out to bring Vicente in. Crofts will return soon, Hammond had a great game, Lopez will soon be a contender to start and Dobbie is a certainty. Gus has replaced him, there isn't a role for him now. That might sound harsh but that was exactly what Gus wanted, the signings prove that.
You guys can beat up on me for the content of my posts with regard to Vicente, that's ok, but my opinion is based on what I personally think is best for Brighton. I don't dislike the guy, I admire his skills and his record and if he was playing and doing his magic I would shout his name from the rafters, but he isn't and by all accounts doesn't want to.
I am told that I know nothing of the financial situation at the club, I don't need to Gus has told us.
His not wishing to return was also told to us by the club. His personal issues causing his late return for pre-season were told to us by the club. His going back to Spain whilst injured and his recent return was told to us by the club. None of this is speculation. His constant injury problems is a matter of record.
My buisness brain will always over rule my heart, following your heart can lead to bankruptcy, and there are times when you have to say enough is enough. As far as paying off his contract, well if he didn't want it renewed then I am sure that he would be happy to cancel it for free, a release by mutual agreement.

I wonder, who would you have left out to accomodate Vicente into the team?
All the reports that I have read say that every player had a great match.
If Vicente was fit now, and thinking of the Watford match on tuesday, who would you drop from the team that outclassed Wednesday and by doing so make room for him?
