Orlandi happy to play his part in Albion win

Andrea Orlandi played a key role at Watford Andrea Orlandi played a key role at Watford

Andrea Orlandi is celebrating his first start for Albion and a key role in their victory.

The deadline day signing from Swansea started in place of Ashley Barnes at Watford last night.

He spent most of the match in unfamiliar territory on the right side of midfield, coping with Watford’s adventurous left-back Daniel Pudil.

But the Spaniard had a crucial say by providing the pass from which Pudil brought down Craig Mackail-Smith for the decisive penalty.

Orlandi said: “It wasn’t my best game but I worked hard for the team in what is not my best position. I am delighted to play my first game in the first eleven and I’m really happy to be part of the team.

“It was a really good win. Watford played really well. They are a strong team but we kept solid and that is the most important thing, especially when you can’t play really well.

“The manager said at half-time and it was a game where we would have to work hard, keep our shape and if we had the chance take it. That’s what we did with the penalty. Craig is in amazing form.”

Seemed a strange decision to play him last night - he seemed a bit lightweight for the role he was asked to play. Barnes added some needed strength when he came on (especially that 'tackle' late on when he picked up and threw their player!!). Can definitely see that Orlandi will have a major part to play this season though.

Yes he struggled a little, but played out of position against a side looking to upset the Albion style, which they did. I am sure he has lots to offer, as I hope does Dobbie, who looked short of pace when he came on.

Agree entirely. All new signings should be blooded at home. Barnes should have started and then bring on Orlandi for the last 30 mins. Barnes would have been happy with that.

I was sorry to have missed the game (unforgivable given that I work near Watford!) but, as Gus pointed out, these were the games we couldn't win last season so to grind out a result shows how far we've come with this squad. I have a feeling we ain't seen nothin' yet!!!!

Moaning about an away win. Awesome. Leave the managing to Gus and celebrate the 3 points FFS.

Dobbie, Andrea and "David" will settle into their stride and attain their full match fitness soon enough.

Am very satisfied that we have racked up four straight wins while still having further growth potential in terms of team stature and synergy.

Out of interest, does anyone know our club record for straight wins and straight league wins? We must be getting interesingly close soon.

Barnes might have been, 'happy with that,' but would a red card have arrived before Orlandi did.

Gus probably worked out that this match would probably be a tad more physical than usual, having Orlandi start with all the experience he has he might have seen it as the wise choice.

Nobody is moaning, it's just honest opinion which we are all entitled to,so if you don't approve i suggest you go back to NSC FGS.

Nobody is moaning Simon. Just chewing the fat. If nobody posted an opinion there would be no posts to read.

Long way to go yet.

The record is nine, set in 1926. We won eight in a row in March 2011, which equalled our post-war record.

Big home wins look great on paper. But i think its the hard fought 1-0 wins that fashion the season. We have now visited two grounds where we dont have great records, burnley and watford, and come away with the points. The omens are looking good. looking at the table, the cream appears to have already risen to the top.

Captain H if I recall correctly we either set a new record or equalled the old one 2 seasons ago when wnning League One. I am not absolutely sure whether it was 7 or 8 consequtive wins. I suspect my confusion is caused by an FA Cup win being included in the sequence ie we may have won 8 matches but only seven League matches. I am pretty certain someone like VegasSeagull will have the correct stats.
As to the question of Orlandi playing on the right yesterday I am a little surprised that Lopez wasn't selected to fill that slot since I had understood that he is a right sided player. It may be that Lopez isn't match fit yet or at least not sufficiently so to start. Then again perhaps Poyet wanted Orlandi's dead ball skills on the pitch.
I noticed a comment from another poster re Dobbie's 'lack of pace'. As I said on another thread I had gathered that being the front striker is not Dobbie's natiral position. Hopefully Poyet will finally sign the 'Holy Grail' target man soon, someone with both physical presence and pace. Then Dobbie can be deployed in the supporting striker role where his skills will be more effective.
Finally Captain H are you going to the 'Albion over London' meeting by London Bridge tomorrow night ? I am hoping to pop in for the first time to see what it is like.

Bruno will be fine, it was just a ploy to waste a bit of time, I'm certain he will be playing at the new Den.

Do you know what, B, I'm not (almost the first I've missed in the 2 / 3 years I've been attending) due to a prior engagement.

Sorry I won't get the chance to meet you (though I almost feel we have met before anyway?!).

Do go along though. They are a friendly bunch, Paul Barber is a great guest - he appeared just a couple of months ago in the first of a "two-parter" and is very engaging and informative - and they have some great ales on tap if that's your thing (it is mine!). Enjoy!

Decent reading, Vegas. Cheers for that. Thanks also to Bruce Beckett for his answer.

I wonder if we could beat the 1926 record this campaign?!

Pleased to note that Barnes is no longer an automatic choice, this will keep him on his toes,he has a reasonable scoring record but on the number of chances he has had should have found the net more often.
