It's tense but Albion go top

Albion went top of the Championship with a tense 2-1 win at Millwall today.

Ashley Barnes fired them ahead on 17 minutes from Will Buckley’s cutback.

Adam El-Abd crashed home the second five minutes after the interval after Dean Hammond had challenged for Andrea Orlandi’s corner.

At that stage it looked like Albion would win with ease.

Chris Wood sparked a hectic finale by replying on 79 minutes for a home side who were by then reduced to ten men by the dismissal of Chris Taylor.

Tomasz Kuszczak was target for the anger of home fans after he was caught by Taylor in the 68th minute.

The Millwall sub was shown a second yellow and subsequent red card.

Wood was denied an equaliser in added time when Kuszczak blocked his shot at point blank range.

Albion lost Craig Mackail-Smith (hamstring) and Bruno (groin) during the match.

I think Gus will have mixed feelings about this result.
Going by the text commentary and the stats of the match we dominated in all areas but made it a struggle at the end.

Three more points, never abad thing and a tip of the hat to Palace, they came back from 2-0 down, Cardiff must be gutted.

Great result; pity the final ten minutes were so tense; it seems the Milwall 'revival' stemmed from the sending off. Was it a clear cut decision?

Overall a great result bearing in mind the enforced changes. A fairly solid performance with plenty of Albion shots for an away match. We went, we won, we're top - end of!

Great result from the boys, another 3 points and top of the league. And well done to palace for the win and to muzza too. Thanks

What a keeper Kuszkzak is! Guy is fast becoming a goalkeeping legend! Good 3 points

Vegas, I don't think Gus will have mixed feelings about this result at all. You can win pretty, you can win ugly, you can win comfortably, you can win tense. But when you win everything's alright and I think he'll be delighted. 6 away points in a week. Brilliant!

5 straight wins .. the lads are on fire. The team the others are all fearing now. Top marks to GP too. Too soon to get carried away as any team can hit a bad run but winning becomes a habit and unlike heroin, cigarettes, gambling and vodka, the winning habit is a habit worth having. If the Albion players have got to have one habit in life then I'd like it to be winning and so it would seem. The weathermen predict the start of Autumn tomorrow but in BHA land it's the start of a red hot summer. IGWT.

Two nerve jangling away games. Only 3 games in and i'm a wreck. Well done Gus and the boys and it's great to be top of the championship. Roll on next Saturday for another 3 points. I hope that when Gus gets the manager of the month the dreaded hoodoo will not strike.

Yeah you are probably right, and as you say, 6 points away from home in a week.

We came very close to only getting one point from the game at a time when they only had ten men and the game was all but over time wise.

Possibly something for Gus to think about?. ,

Sorry tony i personally am never happy to see palace win. dont like bringing us down to there supporters level, but on there websites, the abuse towards us is unbelievable. But yes mate a great win for our boys, millwall dominated us at the amex last season, what a difference a year makes.

Gus was saying that the new players haven't had time to learn how He wants the game played when the opposition play with 10.I just hope Bruno is ok he is immense. The squad is so strong. They can have a rst now and get ready for next week.9 points from 3 games in 8 days.

Good goalkeeping gets you promotion, viz Reading last year. We have the best goalkeeper in the league bar none and he is in superb form.

It is all looking very promising.

Tony is spot on - Palace did us a favour today. The few Albion fans that harbour this simmering grievance need to ask themselves whether they would rather see the Albion challenging for the Premiership or not. If Palace help us top the league that's fine by me and you have your priorities wrong if you think otherwise (IMHO).

Palace fans are misguided, that's all. No need to get so uptight about them. Sympathy is a more appropriate emotion.

The win against Millwall is great news, and being top even greater - but - without wanting to sound like the voice of doom perhaps we should look at the league position of the teams we have beaten. Maybe once those teams are mainly amongst our challengers we can be a bit more confident? Just asking ...

It's early days yet, and you can only beat what's put in front of you. What I would say though is keep in mind our fantastic beginning to last season and don't get too carried away. Being positive is one thing, but keep it real. The season is a marathon and there's a long long way to go. It's a fantastic start to the season, but that's all it is so far, a start. Keep the faith and UTA!!

Don't forget that when you look at where some of the teams we have beaten are, part of the reason they are down where they are is because we beat them.

We are playing some great football at the moment, but people have to realise that not all teams lay down and that you have to battle and fight for the points in many cases. These last two games would have been lost last season; but I think we are so much harder to beat now. We now know that when we go to watch the team we are going to get a performance out of them, and enjoying the football at last. Who knows where Gus can take us but I for one am enjoying the ride. Long my it continue.

Sheff Wed were in the top 6 when we beat them. We beat Barnsley 5-1 who have just demolished Birmingham 5-0. Maybe those teams are lower because we beat them?
Our away record is the best in the division and we're unbeaten at home. You can't argue with that (or maybe you can)

A win against Birmingham next week, and I can't see any other result, will mean maximum points for the month, and the manager of the month award for Poyet.

October looks to be a more testing period, if we take nine points I will be more than happy, if we get more God knows how I will feel.

If we continue in the way we have January will be the most testing time of all, and that test will not be on the park but in the board room.

If every cloud has a silver lining then every silver lining must have a cloud.
We have the meanest defense in the league, we don't give up goals without a fight, I just hope that the board can be just as resolute and that they can hold on to our most valuable assets.

Losing CMS (43 mins) and Bruno (half time) so early on Saturday possibly forced Poyet not to introduce too many players who are yet to become fully integrated into the squad and Albion playing style.
Calderon was a like for like substitution but Dicker knows our systems and therefore fitted in better than the newcomers might have eg Dobbie and Lopez. Would we have held out if Poyet had made different substitutions ?
We won so it looks as if Poyet got it right.
Fingers crossed that Bruno and CMS are fit for Saturday.
