Gus praises tired Albion

Adam El-Abd in the thick of the action for Albion Adam El-Abd in the thick of the action for Albion

Gus Poyet has ordered his table-topping Albion side to put their feet up after grinding out a fifth successive win.

Ashley Barnes and Adam El-Abd struck to beat battling Millwall 2-1 at The Den.

Former Albion loanee Chris Wood replied on his first start for the Lions after they had been reduced to ten men by sub Chris Taylor’s red card.

The visitors were hanging on at the end having looked set for a big win at one stage in the second half.

But Tomasz Kuszczak denied Wood at the death as the Seagulls took provisional leadership of the Championship.

Poyet admitted: “We suffered. When you suffer you need to defend and you need everyone, including the goalkeeper.

“It wasn’t easy at the end partly because of us but, let’s be fair to Millwall, for the way they performed in the last 20 minutes.

“I thought we looked a little bit tired at the end.

“That’s the first time I’ve said that and it is nothing wrong.

“It’s just that seven or eight players have been playing a lot.

“The ones who haven’t been playing had to play for maybe 70 minutes so the next two days are very important to relax and rest.”

Poyet was delighted to see Barnes score on his return and also avoid a fifth booking and subsequent ban.

He added: “We have got plenty of options and I thought on Tuesday we missed a little bit of power in the box and Ash gives you that.

“He came back and scored and he didn’t get a yellow card so he is available for the next game as well!”

Poyet was unable to offer specific details as to the state of health of Craig Mackail-Smith (hamstring) and Bruno (groin), both of whom left the action.

But he did not seem overly worried about the condition his striker and right-back.

I am sure the players are tired. I think that I need the Albion treatment room, I'm knackered after listening to two away games on the radio. I'm sure the boys will be OK for Brum. And hopefully myself. Great weeks work by the Albion and doesn't the table look great?

Wonderful result, and two great away wins in the week. HOWEVER......Gus says the players are tired..... He had Lopez and Dobbie on the bench. Why didnt he bring them on to replace tired legs. Quality players sitting around doing nothing... now lacking 'match' fitness..which is totally different to being fit...and each passing game they are being left behind . Add Crofty to come back in to the side and I bet they are tickled pink to have joined the club and played about 10 mins each !! Maybe we can loan them out back to their previous clubs !!!

With the season going so well so far I just pray that we don't do anything silly and let Mackail-Smith go to Norwich in the January transfer window. If Norwich can turn down a £6 million offer from W.Ham for an over weight, over rated Grant Holt then surely Mackail Smith is worth at least £8 million?

Let's don't start with speculation, just think about next Saturday's game against Birmingham who have just been stuffed 5.0 at home by Barnsley.

Mackail Smiths injury has to be a worry as this is two games in a row that he has had to come off injured. If unfit who do we play up front; interesting. Wonder where Crofts was today as he did not even make the bench. Have to say that very impressed with Hammonds form.

+It's not as if we had the luxury of bringing on Dobbie or Lopez.

CMS and Bruno had already been taken off so not much room for manoeuvre I feel.

Another goal for Ashley Barnes in his 100th league appearance for Albion. We have come a long way since his first game for us. His 36 goals have helped put us where we are.

That’s two hard away battles in quick succession that alone has to be worth 7 points mentally. Hopefully the players who need to recover will have time to be ready for a nice home game against Birmingham.

Pressure is on Blackpool on Monday, for now though we are top of the league. COYB

Doesn't always work out like that does it Championshipgull.
Great result and really satisfying to see the Albion at the top of the table.
Bit worried about CMS and Bruno especially the latter since the back 5 have looked such a good unit this season. At least we have Dobbie and Calderon as back up if either of them are not fit for the Birmingham game.
Good thing though that there isn't a midweek game this week.
Changing the subject I saw on the website 'News at the Den' that Millwall are reported to be interested in Painter. Also the Albion are waiting on a tribunal ruling regarding the receipt of compensation for Grant Hall from Spurs.

Went to Millwall today. We looked so comfortable for periods of the game and should have been 3 or 4 up before Millwall scored having gone down to 10 men. But we did not put away the extra chances to put it beyond Millwall's reach and crazily they got back into the game and gave us the usual last 20 minutes of nail biting and general uncomfortability!! But the win is in place and we are top, so happy days........! Can't believe the players are tired after 7 games but I think I can just about forgive them right now!

Just noticed that there were no bookings for Albion. That's a bonus. Interesting to note Ladbrokes odds for championship winners as follows.

Blackburn 6/1
Blackpool 13/2
Cardiff 15/2
Bolton 8/1
Wolves 8/1
Leicester 8/1
Albion 8/1
Leeds 16/1
Palace 66/1
Millwall 200/1

Worth a bet???

Am sure the odd will shorten for Albion as the weeks pass.

Not sure Alfie. CMS went down and could not get back up, even though the game was in progress for another minute or so. He carried on for a while before giving way to Dicker. I don't think it looks good for him, for a little while at least, so I expect Dobbie to feature much more now. Think Bruno is just a strain, I noticed him doing some fairly acrobatic challenges today! On another note, what a horrible place Millwall is! All concrete, fences, sheet metal suppliers and tower blocks! The locals are as hostile as ever, although not a patch on those that used to abuse us on our trips to the old Den, in the 70s and 80s!! The funniest thing are the young ones who were handing out all the verbal after the game. They were no more than 12 or 13, but their life is mapped out before them! Was glad to get back to the sea and the Downs, we don't know how lucky we are..............!

I am in no doubt that Gus knows what he's doing-he sees the players everyday in training so lets back his judgement. Despite our positive start some of the comments on here seem like people sniping at Gus-bizzare!!!

We have a vastly improved squad over last year-though maybe Gus thinks some of the new recruits are not up to his expected levels of fitness yet

The Gus Bus is on the road and motoring-with still a few gears to go through and I for one will take that.

CMS continues in the rich vein of form he has found and he must surely be a transfer target come january.

Barnes continues as he is and he could easily be another.

El Abd has been consistently performing at the back, another possible.

Bridcutt, again consistent, maybe another likely target.

We will face more than just the challenges on the park come january. Success has it's price in more ways thatn one.

I didnt watch...am in Thailand , but listened to it on the radio. Ok..Bruno off injured...Calderon on Dobbie could have got 15 mins and given Barnsy a beak. Im thrilled by our postion and the amazing results we are getting...ive been supporting this club since 1966 and i cant honestly remember a more exciting time to be a supporter . Tut, tut Wenners, your your post gave no indication that you would be in the UK in the near future as you said you listened to the Millwall match on the radio. Exactly, there was no difference between the challenge that Shellvey gets red for whilst RVP only gets yellow. It is decisions like these that infuriate everyone but they never have to explain to the people who really matter, the supporters. Look at the poor decisions in the Everton game the other night yet the assistant ref just arrogantly stands there.

Sorry keswick did`nt mean my response to seem so abrubt, your right the Everton game was classic of bad decissions. We need imho an official watching on a monitor the same as we see,and sending comments if needed by headset to the ref,if the ref gets a decision correct dont say a word if he does`nt tell him on his headpiece, how hard can it be.UTA

Add Zamora to the list, as he scored the only goal of the first half to put QPR ahead at Tottenham. Spurs have recovered in the 2nd half and are now 2-1 ahead.

12 goals from old boys, but if CMS is ruled out of our next 2 games, we are relying heavily on Barnes and Dobbie to score - and if he plays 2 games in 3 days he will be tired and therefore more likely to overstretch and get injured. We would be in deep sh*t then! I can't understand why we didn't get someone like Sam Baldock or Ricardo Fuller (or even Chris Wood)on loan instead of letting them go to sides lower down in the Championship. We are now relying heavily on a player who hasn't yet played a game for us to deliver the goods. Other than that the non-strikers like Buckley, Lua-Lua and Hammond will need to get on the scoresheet. Maybe it's time to bring Agdestein back or, if goals are hard to come by,even put Calderon up there, as he is brilliant at getting into scoring positions and scored a great headed goal from a Lua Lua corner last season. He also hit probably the goal of the season against Bristol City last year. I also think playing Lua Lua as a striker might be worth a go, if Dobbie gets tired. His brother was lethal in that position, and kaz has pace and an explosive shot.

Maybe Hoskins will be called into action if he returns soon.

Have been enjoying run of wins to much to comment lately. But Vegas has drawn me out! What happens in Vegas should stay there. To much negativity regarding players being transfer targets. It will have to be a big team and big money to tempt any away especially if we are in contention . Gd luck to any player offered the chance gus included . Get hm and watch a game if you can as soon to be 30,000 cap and not many big clubs are going to be able to offer what we can except money and that's not everything. But I guess that's what Vegas does to you :-)

Bandwagon and jumping come to mind.

This feeble minded post is just another example of an offering from a person with nothing to say. "Enjoying the wins too much too comment," what nonsense, I guess you will be more moved to comment if we start losing.

"Not many clubs will be able to offer what we can," really? A certain club were able to offer enough to get Van Persie, both clubs had plenty of money. How about offering the chance to play in Europe and or the chance to play for a club known and respected all over the world.

My comments are not negative, my comments, for one or more of those I suggested, are based on what I see as an issue that goes to our drive for promotion. If you are right, if we should not look forward then why do we talk of who Gus might buy or aquire on loan to further our promotion prospects, is that not looking forward you muppet.

You are so excited by our recent run of good results, and the fact that we are top, that you can't bring yourself to write on this site, but you could be moved to take a pop at me, My dog has a bigger and more used brain than you posses. Instigating a debate about our top players being snapped up by other clubs in January is pretty negative in my book. It is called inventing paranoia.

Comparing Far Gulls brain to your dog’s brain is also a bit childish.

Vegas, stop worrying about January. If we are still in a good position come then, the board will act accordingly for the best interest of the club. If we (god forbid) slipped down the table, then the board will still act in the best interest of the club. They have all done so much for the Albion they will not easily be drawn to others' cheque books. We can be but proud that our players are likely subjects of 'bigger' clubs come then.
I do follow all posts on here & on the whole they are all pretty good but lets keep the interest of debates good humoured.
As we continue our form then all number of gossips will enter the foreground, we, as supporters, should unite on the present.

I thought of that, but on reflection he's far more useful in defence! But yes, if our opponents are sat back in defence holding out for a 0-0 with 15 minutes to go, then El-Abd or Greer at CF would be an option.

As for Saraman saying chill-out...Gus has it all under control, has he forgotten that all summer Gus was after a star striker. Dobbie is very good, but maybe not in the highly intelligent Kevin Nolan or Zamora class. Having said that, I am looking forward with eager anticipation to seeing Dobbie send some scorching shots into the net from the edge of the area, with a bit more power and accuracy than dear old Nooney!

I promise you all, your lives will be much fuller if you stop reading posts from Vegas.

All this talk of ex-strikers is nonsense. Yes, well done to them, but they are gone from Brighton - onwards and upwards and we don't seem to be doing too badly without them.

What people haven't picked up on is the fact that goals have come from everywhere – Buckley, Bridge, Greer and El-Abd, with Hammond and Bruno threatening to get on the scoresheet soon too. When was the last time that three of the back four had scored, seven games into a season?

Add to that the new guys that can create, and score, and you don't really need to worry about the perceived lack of depth in the strikeforce. I'm not saying playing the Spanish way without a front man, just that when they are not firing, there is plenty in the tank as backup.

Totally agree. We can score from anywhere and will do! Add the quality of what is ready on the bench and we really have little to worry about! Let us enjoy the moment, top of the table and with the best squad of players in decades, there really are no genuine concerns about anything!

I don't know if Hosko is back in full training yet Vince but obviously he would provide cover for CMS once he's fully fit again.
Your point about signing another forward is a valid one, bear in mind that Poyet was reported in the Argus (3 Sept) after the 'window' closed as still wanting to sign a target man.
My understanding is that the club iare actually still pursuing that requirement but will only bring in 'the right player'. Having signed Dobbie there is less urgency now, not that he (Dobbie) was bought to fill that role. The same attitude is apparently being applied to signing another CB.
