Byrne poised to make Reds debut
Crawley boss Richie Barker insists he will have no qualms throwing new signing Nathan Byrne straight in at the deep end tonight.
Byrne arrived on loan from Tottenham Hotspur until January yesterday as Barker acted swiftly following the 5-2 home league defeat by Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.
The 20-year-old has made only 23 appearances at League One level during loan spells with Brentford and Bournemouth but could make his Crawley debut as they bid to overcome Premier League opposition for the first time.
Reds take on Swansea City at the Broadfield Stadium in the third round of the Capital One Cup hoping to pull off another shock after knocking out Championship sides Millwall and Bolton Wanderers in the competition already this season.
Barker said: “Nathan is someone we have had our eye on for a while. We had him watched at the weekend and the fact we let in five goals (against Tranmere) pushed us to take action when the opportunity arose to sign him.
“The good thing is we managed to get it done in time so he is available against Swansea. He also trained with us yesterday and knows a few of our players already so there is no concern about him fitting in.”
Byrne can play anywhere across the back four but is likely to replace David Hunt at right-back after his error led to Tranmere’s third goal on Saturday.
Barker added: “People make mistakes. We are dealing with humans and not robots so you’ve got to expect that but the aim is to try to make as few mistakes as possible."
