Albion hopeful of starting role for Buckley
10:50am Thursday 4th October 2012 in Sport By Andy Naylor
Will Buckley pulls Albion level against Ipswich
Albion hope to have Will Buckley available for 90 minutes at Derby on Saturday.
The influential winger was restricted to the bench by hamstring stiffness but came on to grab a late equaliser in Tuesday's 1-1 home draw with Ipswich.
Boss Gus Poyet said: "It should be better. The time he didn't play the other day gives him the chance to recover better."
Right-back Bruno is a certain starter at Pride Park after recovering from groin trouble but Poyet says the return of midfielder Andrew Crofts from a hamstring injury is "still in the balance", raising doubts over whether he will be named in the Wales squad announced tomorrow.
Leading marksman Craig Mackail-Smith (hamstring) and long-time absentee Vicente (thigh) are expected to be back in full training after the international break.
Poyet said: "We've got him (Vicente) and Macca training a week on Monday with the team, or the Tuesday depending when we are in after the international weekend, which means I expect them next week both to have a very good week of running up and down the training ground!"

Without Buckley there would be a real lack of pace up front. What has gone wrong with Lua-Lua he has gone from a premiership player to a very ordanary Championship player.Gus seemes to have used him very spairingly, his confidence seems shot to pieces,Gus needs to show faith in him and play him in every game.Barker for the bench Saturday is a must.
Carlos Edwards had LuaLua in his pocket and for a 35+ year old, Edwards more than matched LuaLua's pace and read him like a cheap comic. His step over trick is all he has.
I like LuaLua but he is a liability in defence as that game proved.

It would be nice to see him get more game time but unfortunately we are out of the League Cup already.

As for Lua Lua, pjwilk has summed it up - a step over trick that everybody has sussed. Needs to work hard to bring himself back in the frame because on Tuesday's performance, he would be lucky to make the bench.

I don't think it right to judge anyone on their performance over the last two games because so many didn't deliver. Would others have had a better game if Lua Lua had performed better, possibly, but did Lua Lua suffer because of the poor performences of those around him, possibly.
I will rely on Gus to learn from the last three hours of football we have played, players too, for me, I just want to forget about them.

Now, in my best Alec Guinness voice: 'This is not the centre forward you are looking for…' . Cursory wave of hand and off to the cantina bar or in this case, Dick's.
Okay… I haven't seen Barker. Put him on the bench and bring him on when we're 2-0 up. There, done. He's in the development squad because he's developing and has potential. Yes, Norman Whiteside, Wayne Rooney blah, blah, etc, etc. But for every big name you can think of that made it young, there are hundreds who fell by the wayside due to bad management, not ready, God's gift syndrome etc. From what little I know of Barker, he's 21 and 5ft 8''. If he is playing well in the development squad, which I believe he is; then he should be knocking on the door. But he is not the solution to battering down defences of hardened professionals who come to the Amex to collect a point. He is also probably not as good as the available options, albeit I grant you that Barnes did not inspire me on Tuesday. Derby will be a different game people, a different game. We MAY not win it (this is after all football) but it will not be the turgid affair duplicated in the last two home outings. Unless of course we go 4-5-1 and go there to defend; which would of course be hilarious(?). Teams whose managers are a couple of defeats away from a serious career review, tend to play safe and can flatter us to deceive their intent (which is to frustrate). I think some people have missed the point over the last two games. On the bigger canvas, scoring goals ain't the problem. Teams coming here to park the bus in front of the goal, with two banks of four is. Doubling up and dropping deep, letting us pass it all day long without any meaningful penetration or threat. Think Chelsea against Barcelona last season's CL semi's for a prime example. I am not, and have not suggested route one and I have not seen anyone of merit go down that road on here for a LONG time. But the call for a centre forward is basically because we have not got one. CMS, Barnes, Toby, Hoskins and Barker are not Centre forwards of the mould of which we speak (I am talking 4-3-3 here chaps, it's the formation Gus plays…and the bloke in the middle, not the winger and the other bloke whose role is generally in dispute but is normally Barnes). CMS is a great team player, creates space and chases back but his gargantuan work rate makes up for some poor first touches; although he is proving that he can score in this division. Barnes is an enigma but he ain't no centre forward. Toby has played wide of centre whenever I have seen him. He looks a bit 'fragile' but has the skill to be a prospect but he ain't no centre forward. Hoskins, jury out due to injuries and rumours of attitude but due to height etc, basically a poor mans CMS, until he proves other wise AND he ain't no..
ANYWAY, don't take my word for it, ask my mate Gus. Maybe he saw a little too much of Spain's Euro performance (and they had Torres on the bench, now HE IS A CENTRE FORWARD…) and maybe it slipped a little bit down the list but he's not forgotten and will be constantly reminded unless we manage to pass our way around the problem; which is not always going to be possible. UTA.

i would start with lua lua against derby.i saw him tear their defence apart at the amex last season.just the sort of game he would do well in.not having a goalscorer is more of a concern.

Loads of people on here and elsewhere have been on, and on, and on about a 'proven goalscorer', why chuck a kid in at the deep end?
Leave it to Gus, he seems to be doing OK at the moment...

I am afraid this thread is descending into trivia and I think we need to bring back talk of serious problems that exist. Just where in hell are Cap'n Haddock and Vegas... Is there any truth in the rumour that they have eloped together...? Not knowing their ages I fear one may have abducted the other which could mean criminal charges could follow - serious stuff. If any of you see them on your travels please keep us informed.

I've had quite a week but i'll say no more about it!!! ;0)
