Poyet: We'll be a different team after the international break
9:30am Monday 8th October 2012 in Sport
Stephen Dobbie action at Derby
GUS Poyet has pledged Albion will be a "different team" after the international break.
The Seagulls could have all of their big guns back when they return to action against Middlesbrough at The Amex a week on Saturday.
Craig Mackail-Smith and Andrew Crofts (both hamstring) and long-term absentee (Vicente) were all missing again for the 0-0 draw at Derby.
Bruno made his comeback from groin trouble, while winger turned central striker Will Buckley went off in the first half with a recurrence of hamstring tightness.
Boss Poyet told The Argus: "The difference is we are going to have Crofty, we are going to have Macca, probably Vicente, a fully recovered Bruno and Bucker, so it will be a different team and we can go into the next game with plenty of options. Let's see if we can do a bit better.
"We were trying to get players that have played at the highest level and we got Tomasz (Kuszczak), Bruno, Bridgey (Wayne Bridge) and Crofty as the main ones and in the two games previous to this one we were missing two of them.
"On top of that, Macca, who started on fire, has been missing in the last three games. Sometimes, with a team like us, when you miss those key players you pay a little bit of a price."
A defeat and two draws from the last three games has dropped Albion from the top of the Championship to fifth but Poyet is still satisfied with their start.
He said: "I think we are nicely placed and we are doing what we want. We are in a great position with 18 points from ten games.
"It's up to us. The fitness is allright, the players are confident. Let's see if we can keep going."

The team certainly seem to have missed CMS, and let's hope for an improvement on the 20th, and in the ensuing "harder" away games. It is worrying that confidence seems to dip when CMS isn't playing -what happes if he is injured for a longer period. On transfer day, I was disappointed that a stirker had not been acquired, though it is easier said than done to get real quality -the loan strikers last season really were not quite up to it. To be fair to the club, a huge outlay on the magnificent stadium, and now the crucial training centre, all has to be paid for, and it is easy for the likes of me to say -spend x millions on a striker, when so much has already been spent. Perhaps we just need to be patient, as it is quite clear that the club will get to the premiership in the near future.

Patients is needed we will get to the Premiership sooner or later but when we do we want to stay there. So if it takes two or three more seasons in the championship so be it.Players will come and players will go and the team that takes us up,will possibly be completly different one.

This club won't go any higher without an injection in at least one quality striker with skill, speed and the ability to put the ball in the net. There are some around in the lower divisions Akpro of Tranmere and MacLeod of Portsmouth. Why didn't we put in bids for Ricardo Fuller or Jermaine Beckford who have ended up at lesser clubs than us. Methinks we may have missed the boat, whilst other smaller clubs have snapped up some real quality forwards.

After all its much better to give the young guys an opportunity when we are doing well rather than if we were struggling at the bottom.
I liked the bits I've seen of both Toby Agdeswhathisname and George Barker. I know they're young but isn't it a chance for them to show what they can do at a higher level?
Maybe good for their confidence as well instead of shuffling the pack when CMS happens to be out. It takes courage to do it but look how JFC did when he came in for a few games.
That's what they need to test themselves. It's great for team spirit as well. Just a thought.

y agree, and certainly with JFC he showed no fear at the responsibility, and i think you are right with TA andGB ,but possibly Gus is concerned with throwing them in at the deep end too quick! .Either way i think like you and many others ,they could surprise us all.Give them a chance IMHO...UTA

Good strikers are like gold dust and you need to pay a liitle bit over the odds sometimes, like we are probably paying Bruno and Bridge more than some. Gus didn't obviously rate Murray that highly, but without his goals (and it was his 2 goals that gave them a 2-1 victory when it looked like Palace were going to their 3rd successive league defeat), Palace would almost certainly still be in the bottom half, and we would probably be top if we still had him. Murray has played an enormous part in Palace's resurgence, and whereas Zaha might have been let go at Xmas, if Palace are in the top 3 come December, Zaha might be persuaded to stay on and help Palace to promotion (possibly at our expense). We let Murray go for the sake of a couple of grand a week! Peanuts.

If we don't get promotion this season, will we be able to keep hold of CMS and Buckley, Bruno, Bridge, Kuszsak et al?
How many supporters would be distraught at Palace going up instead of ourselves???
last night i watched the DVD of our goals winning promotion from Div1. Most of Murray's goals were quality strikes...good touch, good heading, powerful shots, good technique and skills. I wonder sometimes about Gus's ability to spot a good striker, bearing in mind Paynter, Vokes etc

" But there appears to be no cover for Craig Mackail-Smith ".
In the light of Hastingulls excellent post WisdomSpeaks suggestion must be worth a try. It is obviously the most economic solution if it works.
It would not prevent the Albion acquiring the target man type striker Poyet wants as and when a suitable candidate appears at the right price. However since we have been looking for the 'right' candidate for at least 15 months now other options should be explored.
Talking of potential strikers I believe that both Conor Wickham (Sunderland) and Macheda (Manchester United) might be available on loan.

Looking thru' the posts today, I certainly hope that 'Hosko' is not discarded before he has had a real chance to show his ability.
On the Glenn Murray debate, I just wish he was alongside CMS - simple as that. As things stand, there simply is no cover for CMS whilst we seem to be awash with midfield players and 'link' players.

The two certainties are that Zamora is not enjoying it at QPR and Hughes will not take them out of the relegation zone. No comparison, of course, when you compare the two grounds. I think Loftus Road only holds about 18000. Puts in perspective just how lucky we supporters are.
Well if QPR are still in the drop zone at Christmas and we are chasing high for promotion, I calculate a possibilty of a Zamora return.

If the target man we get is Zamora it may just be worth the wait to snap him up in January rather than getting someone else in now.
It is only a theory but not unrealistic and may be the reason why the club is being patient on this position.

If we opted to play one of the youngsters, when CMS is not available, it might look like a gamble but recent results suggest not. The worst that could happen is that they don't score, so what, it's hardly a problem if no one else is.
If we dipped into the transfer market for a loan striker and the player was from a lower devision, that would be a gamble, Peter Ward was great for us but when he stepped up a division he did very little.
If we look to borrow a striker from the upper division we would find ourselves in a bidding war, a war we probably don't have the budget for.
Our best hope of filling the vacancy, filling it at a price we can afford, would be to locate a striker nearing the end of his career and out of contract. January seems to be the most likely time to solve our problem, I doubt anything could happen before then. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we recruited from over seas again.

17 goals in Div2 now the Championship and then 13 goals in our first ever season in the old Div1 can hardly be considered as "very little"! Indeed in that season, Terry Venables said Ward was outstanding and should play for England, after he saw Wardie take the Palace defence apart in taking us to a 3-0 victory. Ron Greenwood never heeded his call, and like many of the "old guard" was far too conservative in his selections. Ward did make the squad but wasn't played for more than a few minutes, despite a superb performance for England U21's.

Peter Ward was the most talented Brighton player I've ever seen.......my question to you Albion fans is this...would you rather see Brighton more or less continuously topping the championship and enjoy watching them winning most weeks....or go up to the Premiership and endure week after week of demoralising and humiliating defeats...?
Truthfully, I enjoyed the 3-3 draw with Leeds last season much more than the 1-0 win against Newcastle, and the atmosphere in the defeat at home to Burnley was fantastic.
Unless we are in the bottom half and need the points for comfort, the result is less important than the performance for me.

I know the feeling of a disappointing win. Wrexham away last year was a good example of an awful win and nothing to be inspired by. I was actually gutted for Wrexham, they were by far the better team on the day.
