Amex in the frame for rugby showpiece

The recently expanded Amex could be staging World Cup Rugby in 2015 The recently expanded Amex could be staging World Cup Rugby in 2015

Albion's Amex Stadium has been included on the long list of 17 stadia for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

The final selection of up to 12 venues will be announced early next year.

The long list also includes Southampton's St Mary's Stadium.

The Argus revealed last month that Albion are vying with Saints to be selected as a South Coast venue for the rugby showpiece.

Well done all at BHAFC. This is well deserved recognition for the work that has been put in to our beloved football club.

On a seperate note, I was reading some comments on a Derby fans forum yesterday. Have to say that they seem to be a very honest and decent lot. It was interesting to see a lot of them saying what a good team we looked but that we would probably be only a mid table side due to a lack of a cutting edge. I think one guy described us as premiership standard for the back 2 thirds and Div 1 for the final third. Any Uta, GP will find the final peices of the puzzle (I hope)

Have a good day all.

Not a rugby fan at all but it would be great for the club and the city if the Amex was included in the tournament list. All bias aside, St Mary's is great stadium as well but being the larger of the two stadiums this may work against it in a bid to stage the less glamourous fixtures I understand the South Coast venue would host. We have also just won the award for best new stadium in the whole world so surely we should get the nod?

Oh, silly comment time is it?
Ok. Rugby cannot compare to football for entertainment and is only played by those who do not have the skill to play football.

Couldn't The Argus find a picture showing the completed East Stand rather than the one used? Where is the Ar5egas based these days? Who else is bidding for the South Coast venue? No conspiracy theory from me.

Aha – the old pub staple Rugby v football discussion…! What I love about football is that the best player in the world can be 5’5” and 9 stone wet through and thus all kids regardless of physical stature or diet can aspire to the professional game. I also don’t see an equivalent take your breath away moment of skill in rugby to match an overhead kick or a Rabona cross. Perhaps unfair but my take on things. Rugby quite simply doesn’t have enough moments in a game to set my heart racing in the way football does. Plus, never trust a sport where the ball doesn’t bounce in a straight line… ;0)

I'm a big Seagulls fan, and love Rugby too. It would be fantastic to see International Rugby at the Amex.

Not when the caption fits, and the recent expansion (displayed in said photo) is probably one of the reasons the Amex is being considered in the first place.

If you are a rugby fan visiting this page, and don't know much about the Amex, and there is a picture of just a stand, what is that going to tell you?

Why would you compare the two? They are completely different sports.

Anyway, good luck to the club. I hope we get to see some decent rugby at the stadium, as well as decent football.

I think the two are always compared as they were both (at least back in the day) traditionally Saturday afternoon sports and so whether watching or playing you had to make a choice fairly early on in life which one was for you. My comments earlier probably originate from the chip on my shoulder I had from rugby being the only school team I wasn't in due to my, in those days, slight frame. It seemed to me that whilst other sports were about skill and ability, rugby at that level at least was only for those built like a brick toilet. Don’t think I’ve ever quite got over that opinion although rugby playing friends have since pointed out the importance of nippy fly halves. Fine at higher levels but nippy fly halves at our school seemed to quickly lose their teeth and I was far too pretty to risk that… ;0) One direct comparison that does always make me smile though is that a 60 yard kick into touch in rugby will earn a standing ovation . Do that at a football match and you’ll get booed from the pitch - for me demonstrating that in football a more aesthetic approach is appreciated even if the majority of the crowd probably wouldn’t see it in those terms.

Listen idiot if you dont like football fine, but no need to prove yourself the perceived archetype fat arsed rugby fan that does`nt have a stadium like the Amex for a reason,it always ticks me off that you use Wembley, but we could`nt use Twickers during the Wembley rebuild. The Amex was built for a skillful game show her the respect she deserves.UTA

It was once said that the children of the aristocracy at Rugby some 100 or so years ago didin't have the nous or skill to play football. So what did they do, they picked the ball up and ran with it? Now that's easy, I could do that.

Well that was a sensible answer. There are both Hove and Brighton rugby clubs (the latter based just down the A27).

Not that it matters since this is an international tournament so people from around the world will want to watch their teams play even if you prefer other ball sports. Surely that is a good thing?

An international sports tournament of any kind, that includes the Amex as a venue will be great for the area. Okay Sussex might not be blessed with famous rugby teams, but supporters of the sport will enjoy the trip to the south coast and the club will receive a decent fee I'm sure. Although not a great rugby fan, I watched Newcastle Falcons a few years ago against Leicester and it was great entertainment, with much skill and terrific atmosphere. There's room for all sport so bring it on.
Only slight concern I would have is if all those mach rugby players drink all the Harveys, eat all the pies and riun the turf.

Bearing in mind Hove alone has four or five senior teams, plus age groups from under 8s (I think) upwards, quite a lot!

I would quite happily go and watch RWC matches there - it's a great occasion, and I can assure people that there is plenty of skill and excitement to be had.

sbiscorrupt..,my only problem with your post is that you started by insulting the very game the stadium was built for,and expect those that use and treasure her to step aside for what You consider "a proper sport that it deserves" .FYI the Goldstone was a lady that served us well, and for all her faults the Withdean brought us home again. Now that we have the magnificent Amex ,you decide to condicend to use Our Stadium, and we are expected to feel grateful. The Amex was built for football, you might want to be a little more respectful to "our lesser sport" considering that you are relying almost completely on FOOTBALL grounds to host your little swarlly.UTA

Just in case anybody has forgotten Rugby Football was born out of' Football.
William Webb Ellis famously 'picked up the ball and ran' when playing football at Rugby School.
I used to play club rugby (weighing under 10 stone) in Sussex on Saturdays but Football on Sunday mornings. I watched the Albion whenever I could.

If this all goes ahead this will be a boost for both the Amex and the game of Rugby Union. As an Albion season ticket holder I believe this will be a venue that will go down well with the International Rugby Union playing countries.

Oh, and sbiscorrupt, comments like yours are totally uncalled for and only serve to make you look foolish.

Forgot to also point out that though I'm an Association Football man at heart I will be trying to get tickets for any of the rugby matches that do get played at the Amex. I don't have a problem watching other sports.
