Amex in the frame for rugby showpiece
10:27am Monday 8th October 2012 in Sport By Andy Naylor
The recently expanded Amex could be staging World Cup Rugby in 2015
Albion's Amex Stadium has been included on the long list of 17 stadia for the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
The final selection of up to 12 venues will be announced early next year.
The long list also includes Southampton's St Mary's Stadium.
The Argus revealed last month that Albion are vying with Saints to be selected as a South Coast venue for the rugby showpiece.

Ok. Rugby cannot compare to football for entertainment and is only played by those who do not have the skill to play football.

Couldn't The Argus find a picture showing the completed East Stand rather than the one used? Where is the Ar5egas based these days? Who else is bidding for the South Coast venue? No conspiracy theory from me.
If you are a rugby fan visiting this page, and don't know much about the Amex, and there is a picture of just a stand, what is that going to tell you?

Anyway, good luck to the club. I hope we get to see some decent rugby at the stadium, as well as decent football.

Cabin fever wrote:I think the two are always compared as they were both (at least back in the day) traditionally Saturday afternoon sports and so whether watching or playing you had to make a choice fairly early on in life which one was for you. My comments earlier probably originate from the chip on my shoulder I had from rugby being the only school team I wasn't in due to my, in those days, slight frame. It seemed to me that whilst other sports were about skill and ability, rugby at that level at least was only for those built like a brick toilet. Don’t think I’ve ever quite got over that opinion although rugby playing friends have since pointed out the importance of nippy fly halves. Fine at higher levels but nippy fly halves at our school seemed to quickly lose their teeth and I was far too pretty to risk that… ;0) One direct comparison that does always make me smile though is that a 60 yard kick into touch in rugby will earn a standing ovation . Do that at a football match and you’ll get booed from the pitch - for me demonstrating that in football a more aesthetic approach is appreciated even if the majority of the crowd probably wouldn’t see it in those terms.

Not that it matters since this is an international tournament so people from around the world will want to watch their teams play even if you prefer other ball sports. Surely that is a good thing?

Aha – the old pub staple Rugby v football discussion…! What I love about football is that the best player in the world can be 5’5” and 9 stone wet through and thus all kids regardless of physical stature or diet can aspire to the professional game. I also don’t see an equivalent take your breath away moment of skill in rugby to match an overhead kick or a Rabona cross. Perhaps unfair but my take on things. Rugby quite simply doesn’t have enough moments in a game to set my heart racing in the way football does. Plus, never trust a sport where the ball doesn’t bounce in a straight line… ;0)

This may appear to be a daft question, but just how much support is there for rugby in our neck of the woods? Well done The Amex anyway.
I would quite happily go and watch RWC matches there - it's a great occasion, and I can assure people that there is plenty of skill and excitement to be had.

sbiscorrupt..,my only problem with your post is that you started by insulting the very game the stadium was built for,and expect those that use and treasure her to step aside for what You consider "a proper sport that it deserves" .FYI the Goldstone was a lady that served us well, and for all her faults the Withdean brought us home again. Now that we have the magnificent Amex ,you decide to condicend to use Our Stadium, and we are expected to feel grateful. The Amex was built for football, you might want to be a little more respectful to "our lesser sport" considering that you are relying almost completely on FOOTBALL grounds to host your little swarlly.UTA

William Webb Ellis famously 'picked up the ball and ran' when playing football at Rugby School.
I used to play club rugby (weighing under 10 stone) in Sussex on Saturdays but Football on Sunday mornings. I watched the Albion whenever I could.
