Poyet baffled by lack of interest

Albion boss Gus Poyet is baffled that two of his players are still on the shelf.

Matt Sparrow and Romain Vincelot were both told at the start of the season their futures lie elsewhere.

The August transfer window came and went without a move for the experienced midfielder and versatile Frenchman.

Now, six weeks into the loan window, Poyet has revealed there is no sign of the situation changing.

He told The Argus: “There has been nothing, which surprises me. They are proven players, even in our division, so I don’t know why.

“It’s hard to accept and to understand but that’s the way it is.”

Sparrow, 29, has made nearly 400 league appearances for Albion and Scunthorpe, including 80 at Championship level.

Vincelot, 27 later this month, featured in a third of Albion’s Championship fixtures last season following a £100,000 switch from Dagenham and Redbridge.

Poyet also confirmed to The Argus it is all quiet in terms of the Seagulls making any temporary additions to their squad.

Albion will have played seven more matches before the loan window shuts on November 22.

Craig Mackail-Smith, Andrew Crofts and Will Buckley (all hamstring) and Will Hoskins (broken foot) resumed full training yesterday but Vicente (thigh) was still a conspicuous absentee.

Saturday’s visitors Middlesbrough expect Dutch striker Marvin Emnes (foot) and ex-England defender Jonathan Woodgate (hamstring) to be fit for the trip to The Amex.

I will probably be slated for saying this, but surely it is time to say thank you very much and goodbye to Vicente. Enough is enough.

What is going on with Vicente? I think he's a fantastic player and definitely one you want in the team but each time we think he's about to resume training it seems he doesn't.

I honestly thought he had resolved the problems that delayed him returning to the squad but, if it's not a fitness problem that's preventing him training and more a question of attitude then, perhaps, it is best he goes.

I don't reckon you will.

Surprised about Spadge and Vincelot, and sorry for them. Can't be very nice, can it. They are very worthy players in their own ways.

I for one hope that Vincelot can work his way back into the reckoning (if he can overcome the personal and totally unnecessary put-down he has endured at the hands of the manager). As I have said previously he was a loyal servant to the club last season, sometimes playing through the pain barrier to delay an operation on his shoulder injury - something Vicente has notably failed to do, even the thought of it is good enough to confine that waster to another 2 weeks in bed... I accept that such sentimentality shouldn't fog the club's interests but this guy is a very talented multi-purpose player and a valuable asset - more so than certain others I could mention who have managed an unwarranted seat on the bench this season. C'mon Romain, grit your teeth and get yourself back in contention. I for one will look forward to seeing you again.

Yes indeed, I can't see why Sparrow and Vincelot are sitting in the wings when Gary Dicker gets in the team!

The money being wasted upon Vincente sitting on his bum doing nothing, would pay to keep two very capable and loyal players to provide competition for places and cover in times of injury problems.
Adios Vincente!

I agree with you Jonathan. He has a tremendous attitude for the Albion and he always gave 100% as he loves playing for us!

I can't understand why Gus has it in for him. There must be something behind the scenes as for one don't get this negative attitude towards Vincelot. He is also tremendous in the air..something that we lack!

In response to the comments about Gary Dicker I sometimes wonder whether people really watch his contribution. O.K. the game is all about opinions and the author of the above is entitled to air his views but all I can say is that Gary would be in my team for certain. He is one player who can pick a pass and tries to use the ball every time he receives it. He is not blessed with great pace and sometimes gets caught in possession which prompts groans around the ground. Putting this to one side I would urge his doubters to consider that without him on the pitch the Albion usually struggle and I think Gus is absolutely right to pick him.
Long may this continue.

Agree with most of the posts but although Dicker can play he never ever shoots when an opportunity appears and this was the big failing last season for all of the midfield very few goals at all from this area. So far this season the same sport of stats with few goals from midfield area.Crofts is usually the most likely to score but we certinly need others to help.

All I'm going to say is VR wages could be the difference between us getting a target man and not getting one. And ultimately the difference between premiership football and championship football.

A fit again Vicente playing just the last ten or twelve games of the season could also be the difference between premiership and championship football. At the moment we only have about 5 players technically good enough to compete in the premiership.
Kucszak, Bruno, Bridge, Buckley and Vicente. Possibles include Bridcutt, Lopez, Orlandi, Crofts and CMS. Not sure about Dobbie, Dunk or Greer.
Oh, and I'd give Vincelot another chance.

Would you take 10 games from vincente over 25 games from a fit target man in the mix?

I agree with your excellent post JM.
One advantage of having Vincelot still with the club is that he provides additional cover at CB now that we are down to GG, El-Arb and Dunk.
Disappointed but not surprised to hear that all is quiet on the recruitment front. Sounds from this thread that Poyet is no closer to securing the elusive Target man I thought he wanted or for that matter the extra defender he said was needed after Elphick departed.
No doubt we will have to wait until January for any movement on these fronts.
Tough match in prospect on Saturday followed by a run of fixtures that will define our season.

Youy've got no idea about his contract which could be pay as you play, for all you know.
The Albion knew that he'd only played occasionally for Valencia due to persisten injury problems but were prepared to take the risk. If he were fit, he'd be playing at a higher level than us.
If he only plays 10 games this season, that will do for me as he is a quality player.
Hoskins has had more injury time out than Vicente but he isn't slated week in and week out.

I would simply say it is difficult to simulate a broken foot, a hernia and other injuries Hoskins has suffered. We don't have a clue what Vicente's injuries are apart from an apparent fit of lazyitis.

The club have said he's had hamstring problems and tendonitus, both of which show up on scans.

Likewise you have no idea about his contract, unless you are his representative,in which case we would all appreciate an update on his fitness and chances of playing this side of Christmas! Hoskins is a completely different kettle of fish.UTA

There will be a lot of posters taking it all back in a few weeks, when Vicente returns, just as there was last season.
