Ashley Barnes misses a late chance
Gus Poyet tonight accused his Albion side of being too slow out of traps against the leaders.
The Seagulls boss felt it took until the second half for his men to really get going in the 1-0 defeat to Leicester.
Albion were sunk by a tenth-minute Andy King strike.
They failed to trouble home goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel until after the break.
Poyet said: "Every player in any league in the world should be ready to start the game against the leaders of the division.
"We should be expecting a little bit more. We created nothing in the first half.
"It looked like we were happy to be losing 1-0 because we kept passing the ball and not committing forward until we told them.
"When we told them at half-time they decided to start attacking and then there was only one team on the pitch until we opened up and left a few breaks to the opposition."
Albion have netted just once in their last five games.
Poyet added: "How are we going to score? Who knows?"

It's tactically where the problem lies, and buying a striker won't solve it.
Against Boro on Saturday Gus's problem was 10 Boro men behind the ball stifling our style, and tonight the problem was 10 Leicester men playing an attacking formation stifling our style.
Go figure !

Well, if you don't know, Gus, you shouldn't be managing the club. You've had more than enough time to find a solution but it seems no one is good enough to fit into your system. Or could it possibly be that your system doesn't work?

Come on boys, this is getting silly now. Halloween's next week. Precisely the same story as last autumn/end of year. If you were a betting man, and I'm not, I'd check last years results and go LARGE on Albion doing the same. Because we just can't score or even manage shots on target whilst the defence stays tight. So we lose 1-0, 1-0, draw 0-0, draw 1-1 etc etc. Does this mean Poyet's taken us as far as he can? In football, you don't get much time so if we continue this season's autumn form as we did last then it kinda proves this point. That's if our goal is the premiership of course. As a championship side, we're getting nicely established. If that's the goal, then great.But there is no long-term goal in football. Only the short. Managers, players and indeed chairman come and go too quickly to consider any other "term"

I have said it ad nauseum but we won't get anywhere until we stop playing CMS as a lone striker. He is too cut off from the midfield who do not give him the early forward ball he needs to be effective. Gus is stubbornly only using one striker and plays others out of position. I like Gus and he has done wonders for us but it has worked against him by only increasing our awareness of how good we could be if he would be more flexible in his tactics. He won't change so perhaps the personnel will ?

The point is, Gus has always wanted to play the Barcelona way, which is through the midfield, with any one of a number of players capable of making incisive runs and scoring. The problem is that he is priced out of finding the players who can do that. He is therefore continuously changing personnel to see which players are up to the mark and reviewing and modifying the way the team play to achieve the optimum solution for us with the personnel at his disposal. If some players can't adapt or don't perform, then he will get replacements who can. For example, Noone could not deliver the right passes and was released. I was very impressed by Lopez (against Boro) who seems to be learning what Gus wants. Barnes was sharper, but not quite there yet (a work in progress). Craig is so much better than last year.
People moan that his tactics are too predictable, but having watched the Middlesbrough game, I was impressed at the way we played from the start, and Middlesbrough, a very good team, were hanging on for dear life. Everyone knows how Man-Utd and Chelsea play, but how many teams can stop them?
I am convinced that Gus is close to turning us into THE major force in the Championship.
Blackpool, Cardiff and others are pretty to watch, but they concede a lot of goals. Gus is working on the whole team, has made us far more fluid from the back and is now close to completing the jigsaw. Gus is a brilliant manager and motivator, and I am sure he knows what to do to, and will get the right men in.

Gus needs to change his formation to place more emphasis on the attack. 1 GK 4 Defenders 2 Defensive Midfielders means we only have 4 players with any attacking ambition. CMS is isolated having to deal with 2 centre backs and feeding off scraps from the midfield with his back to goal. Barnes is a striker played out of position which nullifies his best attributes. Buckley/Lua Lua/Lopez as an out an out winger is then doubled up on by the opposition and having to do something special everytime they need to beat their markers.
Give 2 wingers a chance with Dobbie playing off CMS or Barnes, and 2 CM out of Bridcutt/Crofts/Hamm

I mentioned infuriating earlier on the reason for this was the amount of free kicks and corners which Bridcutt took short which we messed up lost posession and saw Leicester break away for an attack.
One free kick on the left of Leicester's penalty area saw Bridcutt play it short inside to Buckley who instead of letting the ball run across his body to shape for a shot on his right foot played the ball back to Bridcutt who slipped over and kneed the ball out for a goal kick with no one near him. This really summed up the night!!!

Facts are that after 12 games we're in 9th place, 2 points outside the play-off places. If we're still in a similar position (ie. 2 points outside the play-offs) in March, then game on.
We've had a decent run (after the first 7 games we were top) followed by a poor one (2 points in last 5 games). Every team has a bad spell during a season. Let's just hope this is our one and only bad spell!
Did anyone here really think we'd be top two this season? Surely, most of us would've settled for a play-off place before the season started (and still now)?
Our form during the first 12 games is that we're on course for a total points haul of 69 points (ie. as our average points per game so far is 1.5), which is 3 points more than we ended up with last season. That's an improvement from last season.
And I'd say we've got a better squad than last season (especially if Vicente is fit). That's an improvement from last season.
And our ground is bigger and more full than last season. That's also an improvement. As a previous poster said, 'Rome wasn't built in a day.'
So cheer up guys and get behind the manager and the players. Or is anyone still missing the Withdean?

We’ve now only scored one goal in the last 5 games and incredibly we have failed to score in 6 of our 12 league matches and we’re dropping down the table. Only 5 of the other 23 teams in the Championship have scored fewer goals than us and all of those 5 teams are in the bottom 8. There’s no point in avoiding the issue – Gus has got to stop forever blaming other people, take some responsibility and get us two Championship standard strikers – and soon. Surely it must be clear even to the obstinate Gus that our current strikers are not good enough at Championship level. We have the meanest defence in the Championship but, as the last few matches have shown, that’s of limited value if we can’t score goals.

We have a manager learning his craft (still just inside his first three years) who has provided us with the best football I've seen in my 33 years supporting The Albion, an outstandingly dominant title win followed by a top half of table finish the year after in a uugher level witb the 17th ranked budget and this season has had is top for three weeks and now I mops session of the meanest defence in the whole football league!
He has attracted superb talent to our non-big-spending budget. This is his personality and character talking, not Tony B's banknotes alone.
You make me embarrassed to read this site sometimes. We are going in the right direction without doubt and you are squabbling over our struggles with the tricky stuff of getting the striker balance right. Give it time FFS!!!

Maybe playing some forwards would help, after all it is normally forwards who are best at finding the net. He should try picking some for a change and give Barn Door Barnsey a rest !!!
