Vincelot could still have a role to play with Albion

Gus Poyet has refused to call time on Romain Vincelot’s Albion career.

The manager insists Vincelot could yet play a part in the Seagulls’ Championship campaign, despite being loaned out to Gillingham and told at the start of the season his future is elsewhere.

Poyet says the move to the League Two leaders may turn into a route back into first team contention for the versatile Frenchman.

He told The Argus: “It depends on what he does and how he plays and what we need at the time.

“I always say when players are under contract there is always a chance because you don’t know what is going to happen. Maybe you get a virus and have ten players out.

“I hope it works out for him because he is a very good professional and I don’t have a bad word for him. He trains every day with no complaints and never asks for any extra days off.”

Vincelot, under contract until next summer, scored on his debut for Gillingham in Saturday’s 1-0 win at AFC Wimbledon after joining them for two months.

He has played in several positions for Albion but chose the Kent club for the chance to revert to the attacking midfield role he adopted with success with previous club Dagenham and Redbridge.

Poyet revealed: “There were a few clubs interested in him that wanted him to play at full-back but he was looking for an opportunity to play as an attacking midfielder and get in the box.

“He did that very well at Dagenham. It was not an easy decision for him to drop a couple of divisions but I am pleased for him that he has gone in there and scored.”

Did we ever give him a chance in that attacking midfield role anyone?

I cant help but ask why he was signed from on his performances as an attacking m/f player, then played in defence for us. I liked him and feel sorry he has been treated this way when you think of some of the one dimensional players still in situ with us.

Because he was signed as defensive cover.

Had Vincelot not been in effect frozen out from the start of the season- and there is no suggestion from the manager that he is anything other than a model professional - then for sure we would have seen something of him in midfield in the last few weeks. Very much hope to see him back.

Agree with sentiments. Gus seems lacking clarity of thought. Still think Noone was a loss.

Proof that he is a very very useful utility player whose talents were poorly expoited at the Albion. When you consider that he is more than useful with his head and has a preference for the attacking midfield role one can only wonder what we may have missed out on. And for anyone who thinks that there is a world of difference don't forget we signed Harley who never actually played for Swansea and actually played for Exeter... Oops, have I just shot myself in the foot...? In any case I re-iterate my best wishes for RV and hope that the 2 months away will indeed bring him back into contention in January. Fingers crossed.

I'm not sure any of the squad know what role they're in at the moment. Mostly they just look confused lately

Vincelot's place in the squad as a utility player had more relevance when we had only 5 subs last season, now we have gone back to back to 7 it has not helped him keep the place.

Whilst we are on the subject of out of favour players, is there any significance in the fact that Hoskins played no part in the development squad match yesterday? I was hoping he might at least make the bench on Friday, ready to step up to the plate.

I would have thought that the return to 7 subs would have helped his cause to be honest. A utility player is worth his weight in gold imho, because they make the changing of systems during a match that much easier to implement.
Always liked what I saw of Vincelot, and really hope that Gus takes him back for a purposeful reason.

Yeah, Noone was a loss, but he must have wanted to go to a good club nearer hhome. Cardiff had been on the cards for seven months and it was a good move for him.

For all his lack of a final ball last season, he started this season with us without this problem, before he moved. He didn't just suddenly become good at Cardiff, he is a good player and has a great future.

Because we have more subs we can have specialist players on the bench, so you don’t need a utility player.

To add to my earlier thoughts, should RV continue to flourish at Gillingham GP may have to exercise those man-management skills I for one have already questioned in order to get him back in shape mentally to get the best from him. He may well be tempted to look at a future in Div 1 once the Gills have been promoted which they look likely to do. Time will tell and I really do hope GP can do the magic... As for the earlier post with reference to Will Hoskins I sincerely hope he will be present in the squad - there is no reasonable argument to leave him out given the current state of the team.

I don't think there is any doubting the players ability but he is not going to propel the club into the premier league despite his impressive abilities. The same applies to Matty Sparrow.

My opinion is that GP is trying to play a purist style of football with the players available within the budget and it isn't always going to work. Barca can play this way due to the personnel available but unfortunately we do not have that luxury.

We can therefore expect ups and downs until the required personnel are within our reach. For GP's style of football to succeed at the highest level we require a budget far superior to the one we have.

We are competitive this season again but if we can go that extra mile into the playoffs remains to be seen.

from what i saw of vincelo

from what i saw of vincelot last season there are two current first teamers

from what i saw of this guy, there are two current first teamers, that i would replace with him. Think he may have been abit exposed by the better quality wide men. But it seems fullback is not his preferred position. But one thing for sure we are crying out for a goal scoring midfielder.

Good shout from Wiseman about Hoskins. I hadn't noticed that he played no part in the reserve game against Charlton. If he's not suffered a set back in his rehab, and is fit, I hope he bags a spot on the bench for Friday. I'd bet good money that he won't be there though.

Warren Aspinall on Saturday's commentary was saying that Hoskins neded up to 8 reserve games before being eligible for the matchday squad. A quite ridiculous comment. That said, they played a sound bite from the prematch press conference with Oatway and when asked about Hoskins he burbled on about players returning to fitness and being available after Christmas (same for Vincente).

One can but hope....

A bit bizarre but our on loan players are doing better than the ones at the club ... Hmm ... I always liked Vincelot and still do ... an attacking midfield player ...dont we have another one of those at Oxford on loan ? I am starting to worry about Gus and some of his decsions and comments just recently ... The "Boring" comment , his tactics , player selections...Hope he can turn it around ..As for Friday night , i dont think i want to watch ! GG

Perhaps Gus thinks there is something missing from RV`s game that he hopes a loan spell can put right, and if so hopefully we will see him again. Mind you with all the tinkering Gus is doing with the midfield its no wonder we looked lost at Blackpool,we need the same consistency in MF as we have at the back, injuries aside.S`oton gave Leeds an unwelcome boost by changing all 11 players, thanks NA we were hoping you would run em ragged.I hope Gus has something up his sleeve,it would really hurt not to take all the points against Leeds.!.UTA

I remember recently reading that we should plough through the lower leagues for new talent and, in particular, a striker (sorry Romain - going a tad off the thread subject for a second). Last night I saw a 6ft striker from Swindon score 2 goals against Aston Villa. The 1st was good, the 2nd was sublime. His 3rd in 2 games. How about getting him in on loan, that's if DiCanio would release him. Maybe we could buy...? His name is Miles Storey and he's 18. That means he could spend 2 or 3 years in the development squad learning how to score against clubs like Villa... oops, I forgot - he knows how to do that already.

Very pleased you noticed my post last week. I would hope that even before last nights game, he would have been under review Perhaps one of the Albion's 'scouts' could go and watch him in a Swindon away game and see how he performs effort wise towards the end of a game.

The Gills are playing Romaine in midfield and thats the position he favours. From what he says he's quite happy to stay at the club in that favoured role and he's given up on the Albion now as an option to develop his career.

From his point of view, his best bet would be a move even if it is only to the Gills. From there, like Crofts he can move on.

Gus can back pedal all he likes but we already have a surplus of midfielders, so Romaine has to base his decision on past managerial decisions not on any sweet talk Gus now whispers in his ear

It's called Man-Management... or, in this case, total lack of it...! Oh well, never mind, in the eyes of many he is totally irreproachable and can never put a foot wrong... maybe they're right - fingers crossed...

You have to remember most football managers once you get to know them are pratts.

It just takes time to suss them out behind the smiles and the BS.
