Poyet: Stick to the game plan

The Argus: Gus Poyet sensed impatience in the crowd against Peterborough Gus Poyet sensed impatience in the crowd against Peterborough

Albion boss Gus Poyet has ordered his players to stick to the game plan and ignore fans demanding a more direct style.

Poyet sensed the restlessness of supporters during Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over Peterborough at The Amex, when Stephen Dobbie’s injury time goal ended a run of seven games without a win.

The Uruguayan is in no mood to abandon his passing principles and wants supporters to be more patient as Albion try to build on a mini-revival of three matches undefeated at Wolves today.

Poyet told The Argus: “The fans were so nervous, more nervous than me, ‘kick it forward, go forward’.

“No, stay calm. It’s not us. If we kick it forward and try to win the ball in the air then we are not going to win it.

“If we kick it forward for no reason the rest of the players are not expecting that.

“Not only are we going to lose the ball, we are not going to get knockdowns, maybe the opposition are going to break and we are going to concede.

“We won the game because we didn’t concede. It was a clean sheet. That gives you a chance to win games.

“The way we like to play is make sure we are organised and defending well all the time and then, with the quantity of attacks, quality and deliveries, we are going to score.”

Poyet warned his players about a negative reaction from the crowd during his half-time pep talk against Peterborough.

He revealed: "I said don’t panic. The fans are going to get mad. Believe, Keep passing the ball, don’t worry about what they say and people shouting, keep passing the ball at the back.

"That was the key for me. I know people would like us to play more direct. Not here."

Exactly why we don't need a big target man. Goalscorer who can hold the ball up and pass - yes!.

Funny how the BBC take on the same Gus interview used by the Argus yesterday was 'Gus targets promotion'. The Argus version being Gus says we are not ready for promotion.

At the end of the day Gus is the boss and you do what the boss says or loose your job.
So far Gus has done us proud the only negative being IMO that an additional forward should have been brought in before the season started but then that may not be down to Gus but the lack of funds at the time.
Fancy a draw today today and would be happy with the point.

Gus says its my way or someone else's way. I'm happy, sitting in 8th spot, true we still need additions to the squad, power, strength being able to mix it when required. My gut feeling says a win today,Wolves are poor at home and the crowd gets tetchy very quickly there. Soak it up for the first 15/20 mins then control the game, use the crowds frustration, 2.0 lovely. COYB.

Reason we kept a clean sheet is clear, posh would never have scored .. Gus is missing what he said about two weeks before the season began, 'we need another forward and central defender, our form dipped when CMS was missing through injury, and we have yet to miss GG . I don't think many realise how good a defender he is, for a big guy he can pass it, and his positional sense is first class....
I believe we are two players short of winning promotion, and the return of Vicente short of winning the championship.
Remember Reading won the league when mid table in December.

To be fair the BBC headline says that Poyet is targeting a STAY in the Premier, not a quick in and out like Saints and Reading look like they're heading for, something we'd all be in favour of I'm sure.

I concurr with your view that we are just two players short but am confident that Orlandi will become the new Vicente. I cannot see us losing today.

Disagree about Greer, he's a different player without Elabd, against the Posh he was watching his man and not the ball on a number of occasions, you can't do that. El-abd does the tough defending and allows Greer to tidy up. Next season Dunk and El-abd for me.

We are more than two players short.More like five and clear out some of the players, that will never be good enough.

Think your find Dunk wants away, once this court case is done and dusted. He has not signed a contract offered to him 4 months or so ago, which does not look good.

Probably the court case is the reason why he hasn't signed yet, if he wants away, then he wouldn't be anywhere near the first team.

Mix it up a bit Gus I think that's all we want to see. I'm starting to wonder if Gus actually wants a target man. Doesn't suit our one dimension. Whilst we are at it why not play Barnes wide again.

In the light of what Gus is saying in this article do we want a Rooney type player or a Crouch type.

If it's a Rooney then we have him already, Dobbie, if it's a Crouch then we need to go shopping. For me I prefer the ground game and I still fancy Lopez to shine if and when he gets the chance of stringing together a few starts.

I'll go with Gus on this one.

You can be direct without lumping it in the air, and if we are, as Gus says, never going to win the ball in the air why throw so many aerial crosses into the box?
I love the football that Gus has brought to the club and do not want him to change much at all, but teams that play with a high defence can be more threatened with through balls (still on the floor) for CMS, the space they leave sometimes is begging for it and we have in Bridge, Buckley and Saltor players who can spot and execute this type of ball well.
This was CMS' bread and butter at Peterborough.
