Zaha blasts back at Poyet

Wilfried Zaha, grappling with Albion's Adam El-Abd last season. Wilfried Zaha, grappling with Albion's Adam El-Abd last season.

England newcomer Wilfried Zaha has accused Albion boss Gus Poyet of talking "nonsense".

The confident Crystal Palace winger has hit back after Poyet told The Argus Will Buckley is a better player.

Zaha said: "Last season Guly do Prado at Southampton grabbed me and said 'Respect me'. I'm thinking, 'I don’t know you, I don't care who you are, so why should I?'

"It even happens before games now. Brighton's manager Gus Poyet said Will Buckley is better than me, but I don't see the point of coming out with nonsense like that."

Poyet drew comparisons between Buckley and Zaha after the Albion ace teased and tormented Leeds at The Amex earlier this month.

Poyet told The Argus: "He's not for sale. It doesn't matter how many millions they are putting on the table in January. He is going nowhere.

"How much are they talking about for Zaha? Ten million? They are going to have to go over that, because he is better. I've got no doubt."

Zaha, 20, could make his England debut in tomorrow night's friendly in Sweden.

Buckley and Zaha will face each other when Albion visit Championship leaders Palace on December 1.

Meanwhile, Albion have appointed former West Ham and Leeds keeper Mervyn Day as Scouting and Talent Identification Manager.

Very different types of wingers, but at the moment Buckley is more productive. Zaha however will no doubt be sold for far more money, especially with his call-up.

Also, Zaha thinks only Messi and Ronaldo are better than him, so I think we can safely discount any of his opinions :-) There's self-belief and there's self-delusion!

Gotta say good for Wilfreid on this one! Although his response has been seen as arrogant but some BHAFC fans on Twitter, I agree: what was the point of GP drawing the comparison?

Will Buck is one of our best players - probably up there with Bridders and Kuszack for player of the year so far - but he really didn't need this. I know GP was being complementary, but all it has done is draw scorn from the Palace fans and poor old Will's gonna attract plenty of abuse in the game at Selhurst. Don't think he'll thank Gus for that!

Zaha 20 years old knows more about football than Gus with more experience in his little finger than Zaha has in his whole body, think he should stay of the shandy, Zaha that is.

Gus' comments were ages ago, and if we're complaining about comparisons, where do you stand on Zaha's "Only Messi and Ronaldo are better than me" line?

Although that, probably like Gus' words, have probably been taken out of context and are probably nothing more than the beginning of the big build up to the game on 1st December.

Oh, and CPFC trying to get a bit more money for Zaha when he's sold in the transfer window.

But Zaha has just turned 20 years of age. Gus is older, and a manager. That was my point. He shouldn't draw comparisons like that.

If Gus was originally asked for his opinion on cp`s over inflated valuation of zaha, then he is perfectly entitled to his opinion. If he was not asked, his opinion is still valid, whether to boost WB enthusiasm or simply because he believes it,personally i think Will is a far better all round player,at least at the moment.Managers of other clubs have commented on some of our players already this season, some positive some negative,so what, that is their opinion and whether you or i agree with it or not, does`nt matter they are entitled, just as Gus is.Maybe this arrogant dislikeable upstart will become another Messi in the future, but he imo is a long way short from what little i have seen of him,the acid test will be how he copes on Dec 1st!!. Gus has been there seen it and done it,that gives him the right to express his belief,if a spoilt child cant handle that, how will he handle top flight football.Seagullsove
rGrimsby got it right, zaha goes down far too often and too easily, perhaps this is one of the things that Gus was eluding to,when complementing Will. Aside all that ,when have cp ever missed an opportunity to moan at us?..Keep it up Gus..UTA

Another Nothing Story from the Argus.

I'm a BHA season ticket holder of some twenty years and Ive been watching the Albion for more than forty. I enjoy watching Will Buckley as much as I have anybody who's worn the stripes in that time and I hope we keep him. But I also think Zaha is a really skillful and exciting footballer, and good luck to him and Crystal Palace.

I've never bought into the pseudo-rivalry with Crystal Palace and I wish the Argus would just stop trying to stoke bad feeling. It is disingenuous at best and has no place in a decent newspaper.

I really admire Ian Holloway, think Glenn Murray is an excellent centre forward and I hope Palace get promoted along with us. They're a fine football club with a sound history and both they and we should stop pretending that we dislike each other any more than any other club in the league we happen to be playing in.

Steve Coppell was a great manager, too.

A Palace game is worth three points just like any other. No more, no less.

Poyet is clearly trying to talk up Buckley's value. Come January if he's as good as Poyet claims, then expect interest from Premiership clubs.

A little odd that he hasn't already been linked to the top 4 or to Real Madrid. Or been called up by England.

What Gus was actually saying, or trying to say, (two weeks ago), was Buckley is NOT for sale in the realms of the standard 1 - 2 million Championship expectation, (Al La Noone going to Cardiff). Which translated, means he would only be for sale in the realms of 10 million. (Al La Zaha going somewhere in Jan).

I thought Gus was making a very good and valid point. He wasn't so much comparing Zaha and Buckley as players but more so as one being valued at 10 million makes the other also valued at 10+million.

So, in Gus's round about way, just letting all the would be sniffers who'll be around in the Jan Transfer window to not waste our time with 1 million offers for Buckley.

End of... stop the fuss...and remember.... every player is for sale, always has been always will be, it's just the valuation that makes it happen or not, it's how football clubs make money, and thus, its how they progress.

The same goes for any team - no one would want anyone's team to go the way Portsmouth have for example. There is plenty of room for many good teams and we should especially try to support teams in football generally who are striving to end the chequebook success that has so spoiled elements of the game.

Crystal Palace are just another football club, they have had a good run of results but will sell this lad in January.
He will be sold for an inflated sum, he will sit on the bench and maybe come on as a sub in one or two games in the Premiership. He will also be earning himself a huge amount of money for a young guy. Let's see if he is mature enough to cope will all that this will bring with it, many don't.
Personally, I hope he does cope and that he developes into a top player for England.

If you think about it Gus has done what Palace have done, 'if you want my player this is the price.' The price tag attached to Zahar came from Palace, a signal to the prem teams who might want him. Is Buckley player as good as he is, maybe, will a prem club want Buckley, another maybe but what is certain is that if they both get bought the price will be high, Gus and Palace have seen to that.

If, and that's a big if, both players get sold the sale of the first of them to be sold will set the price for the other. We have heard talk of Zahar moving on but have we heard about any prem club wanting Buckley, I I haven't. This could all be no more than Gus creating a market for a player that doesn't have one right now, this could be a very move by Gus. . ..

I think that there are two comments thta have been made by Gus that should be read as one. 'Brighton are not ready for the Premiership and, 'Buckley is valued at 10+ million.' I might add a third comment made a couple of months ago regarding CMS, Gus told us how close we were to selling him but the offer wasn't quite right.

Brighton will sell players if the price is right, we know that. A combined price of 16+ million for Buckley and CMS would be good buisness. At our level 4 million buys a good player, two out and four in could be the start of a rebuild for next year, they year we really go for it. Gus would also have his annual lump sum for transfers that the club give him. If Gus had maybe, 22 million to go shopping with for 2013/14 I could see that as a real attempt for promotion.

Whats with all this Gus Fuss?

Part of the beauty of listening to Gus's interviews is trying to establish exactly what he is trying to say! When he first arrived Johnny Byrne and co were always having a great laugh on BBC Sussex radio, following a Gus interview.
The bottom line is that he cares, secondly he is passionate and gets wrapped up in the game. Surely that's the fun for all of us - to get involved, heated at the referees perennial incompetence - always biased against us!!! Look at last season, we were one of the most sinned against teams in the Championship, but had the worst disciplinary record. Gus used to get apoplytclic with the injustice of it all. Yes, he should be calm, composed, aloof, etc etc etc... but as Gus says "THAT'S ME" Take me as I am or leave it.

Whether you agree with his team selections, or his tactics, or his purchases or his promises... or not...you just gotta love him!

I am a rational and open minded person with no religious beliefs, political biases or racial prejudices in normal life.
Supporting a football club is not a rational thing to do though, to pay your money and watch even when you know the football will be dire, to attach real emotion to victory or defeat or to travel to the ends of the country to chant the names of players who will change clubs at the drop of a hat if they get a better offer, is all illogical.
As far as football clubs go, I hate none more than Palace, love none more than Brighton. That is the way it is, if you examine it, both positions are absurd, so don't think about it, feel it.

Is there any confectionery in this world you hate more than cream eggs or do they score 11 on the hate scale?

Zaha is clearly better than buckley purely on the fact he has an end product! Buckley 80% of the time does something amazing then scoops in a hopeless cross.

Poyet was just trying to point out how ridiculous 10 million for a championship player is and putting people off buckley! Palace arent even our rivals portsmouth and southampton all day for me Palace are just some london club who arent big enough to take on Millwall etc i feel sorry them ! "you should have burnt more, You should have burnt moreee!"

To be honest, I'm not sure how you can HATE either a piece of chocolate or a football club.

Not like, maybe. But HATE?

Crystal Palace are just another football club to me...

Exactly my point CF, hate is a strong word and I can save my hate for creatures like; Peter Sutcliffe, Fred and Mary West, Ian Huntly, Mark Dixie, Shane Jenkin, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, Jimmy Savile etc etc

If we are going to hate everything Palace, that also includes Mullery and Coppell who are part of our heritage. Not forgetting Murray, and you can throw Dean Hammond in for the hell of it, just because they fit the hate profile.

You do write well Baldseagull and I respect your passion, but I haven’t got enough time to hate a football club.

On the real hate scale of 1 – 10, using the above list as the hate bench mark for 10, I would hate Palace about 2, so why am I instructed to stand up and sing hate Palace when we are playing Birmingham. Fair enough when we play Palace but even then it’s just all for the panto effect.

Those must have been pseudo punches that have been exchanged regularly over the years then.
Gerry Ryan must have been faking that snapped leg and we should be chanting Dolphins when we get a corner.
What makes a real rivalry for you?

Living next door to each other like Liverpool and Everton?

Belonging to counties on opposite sides of the civil war like Leeds and Man Utd?

Religious differences like Rangers and Celtic?

Our rivalry with Palace is one of the few in the country where both sets of supporters are largely in agreement, we hate Palace, they hate Brighton.
There is no pretence for me.
No, those punches were real. Just like the ones I've seen over the years from followers of Millwall, Reading, Southampton, Chelsea and others. Gary Hart had his leg broken at Peterborough and Kazenga Lualua at Hartlepool. You could say that all of those clubs have been "rivals" of some kind . . . or none of them. At least Liverpool and Everton play each other every season: Brighton and Palace have been in different leagues more often than not in recent years. As Cabin Fever says, they're just another football club - and I admire more than I dislike about them, including their ability to bring through young players and their inclination to stand up to the bullying of larger clubs. Brighton's my club and I'm as emotional about them as the next man. I know Palace fans and I like and respect them. Mine is a plea to the Argus, really, to drop the provocative language, because it's unnecessary and does more harm than good in relations between supporters of different foortball clubs.

I think the rivalry between Brighton and Palace will always be there for some. But with the influx of fans ' new ' to BHA that actually support Premier League clubs first and foremost, they will have no idea what that rivalry is all about. And less inclined to engage in it. So I see it gradually fading away....

In my local we have two Millwall lads, one Charlton (Ex copper) and about six Hammers lads and they all say the same thing, palace are a pain in the a**e,always grief. Most teams are happy to have one rivalry, they`ve got at least four!.That has to tell you something. It`s 41 years since my first Albion game,i have sat and had a beer with Palace fans once in that time,it would make my season to be able to repeat that, but i wont hold my breath!!.UTA....ps agree, the Argus needs to stop stirring the pot!.

Yep nothing wrong with rivalry, my only question of it is being over the top. Many forget that there are lots of children at these games now days and there is nothing worse than them seeing grown men buying into spitting hate of a rival, it only encourages trouble which kids shouldn’t have to witness.

I don’t want to frighten kids at the football by behaving like an idiot especially in this day and age of football when we are trying to make it a family day out. It's called evolution.

I am not making excuses for idiot Palace fans before anyone suggests that I am.

Have to also add that I frequently started the in your Palace slums songs in North Stand in the 80’s when my singing career was at its peak, so I'm not perfect.

So this is situation. It's the last game of the season, we need to win our game and Palace have to beat team 'X,' of they will get the final playoff place, we win and so do Palace, now just how much do you hate Palace?

Tug I don't care about them, unless they can help us. I just think that all this talk about, 'hate,' is a joke and we need to get over it. Liverpool fans don't hate Everton, they want to beat them every chance they get but they don't hate them.
As Hovite said, rivalry is a good thing but hate should be reserved for those that truly deserve it.

Both yourself and Hovite are spot on,its an unfortunately overused word, and very often little thought goes into thinking how final it is,myself included. Hovites list is a good example of what to hate, but in general i dont think there are many that would truly mean it when describing another team, even when its that lot.Going back to Hovites post, making sure the kids at the Amex are not bathed in an atmosphere of bile is important, far better to simply point out that they support the 2015-16 Premier league champions.UTA

Too true Hovie, i dislike them but only because of the rivalry, not really them. I remember my first visit to smellhurst with the real Peter Taylor at the helm (not the p----ce one) they were a bigger club than us in those days, we had Barry Butlin on loan from Luton Town leading our attack and he scored in the first five mins and we defended stoutly for the next 85 and ran out 0-1 winners the atmosphere was quite scary after the match with their outraged support looking for Albion fans to take their disappointment out on, but we managed to come away unscathed with our scarves hidden (discretion being the better part of valour) until we had reached the safety of my motor, i can still remember my mate sitting in the passenger seat and asking a group of their fans what the score had been and driving away quite rapidly when he replied "ALBION"after one had told him. Those were the days.SEAGULLS.
p.s. i now have two of their supporters as colleagues and to be honest they are just normal people who happen to follow a different team.
