Painter to carry on

Marcos Painter did well at Huddersfield on Saturday Marcos Painter did well at Huddersfield on Saturday

Marcos Painter is in line for his second home appearance in a year for Albion against Bolton at The Amex on Saturday.

The left-back is poised to deputise again for the injured Wayne Bridge, while Tomasz Kuszczak, Casper Ankergren, Adam El-Abd and Andrew Crofts could all return to contention.

Painter had his first outing of the season in last Saturday’s 2-1 win at Huddersfield, with Bridge still sidelined by a calf problem.

Albion will not take any risks with the former England defender after Painter proved his worth in Yorkshire.

Boss Gus Poyet told The Argus: “Wayne is probably going to take another week so I am not sure if he is going to be ready for Bolton. After the performance of Marcos it changes the situation because you know he is fit enough to perform against difficult teams.”

Painter made a solid contribution to Albion’s victory until cramp forced him out of his first game of the campaign and fourth since suffering hamstring damage against Coventry at The Amex 12 months ago.

No. 1 Kuszczak (finger infection) and regular understudy Ankergren (thumb) are fighting to dislodge third choice Peter Brezovan following his late call-up against Huddersfield.

El-Abd, meanwhile, is expected to be available to contest a centre-half spot with Lewis Dunk after missing the last three matches with hamstring trouble.

Poyet said: “Adam is going to be fit for sure. Tomasz and Casper we will see. Tomasz came back with the injury from Poland and it got infected.

“We thought within 24 hours it would be all right but it got worse. Casper turned his thumb. He tried to train on Friday and couldn’t.”

Crofts was left at home to be with his heavily pregnant wife. Poyet said: “She was due to give birth six days ago. He was nervous and we had a long chat.

“It wasn’t easy but in the end we decided it was common sense to leave him, just in case.

“I talked to him and he knows how important he is to us. He is going to be ready, without any doubt.”

I sincerely, hope that Kuszczak is not really "fighting" to dislodge Brezovan!! Every time Brezovan's name was mentioned on Saturday I broke out in a cold sweat! He inspires so little confidence and for such a big guy certainly does not command his area at all. He is not up to this level at all and I am still having nightmares about his positioning in the hammering we received at Upton Park last year!! I suspect Kuszczak is a foregone conclusion if fit and if not, Ankergen shades it for me...........just!

Agreed. Excellent professional. With Bridge no doubt needing more than another week - we always seem over optimistic on injury returns to put it mildly - great opportunity for Marcus.
Just digressing, for me this is the most attractive fixture so far this season. A chance to see Kevin Davies and a clutch of interesting players ..Spearring, Ngog, Knight, possibly Petrov, Warnock I think they have David Wheater as well. Tough game but with the right team selection - Hoskins and Dobbie to be in the mix - very confident.

As we at home for next two games - Dobbie and /or Hoskins please ! We (the Amex crowd) deserve top notch entertainment as well as 6 points. Ps looks like BZ out for a while at QPR.

Yes, and to the main thread, delighted for Marcus. A strong, hard working professional, who has been patient and deserves to keep his place Saturday. Pace may well prevent a long run in the side, especially against some of the more potent attacking forces, but it would be great if he capitalised on the opportunity.

'Carry on Painter,' sounds like an old movie title.

It's a good chance for Painter but more importantly it is good that we can fill the space vacated by Bridge with confidence in the replacement.

El-Abd will probably dislodge Dunk and Brezovan will go to the bench. Crofts I would guess will be on the bench too.

David Beckham will play his last game for LA Galaxy in a couple of weeks but he is not retiring. Beckham is looking for one more challenge before he retires, he would find that with as as midfield playmaker, go get him Gus.

Well played at Huddersfield Marcos, and good luck for the weekend,i was a little concerned at having 3 changes to the back 5,but you lads were as good as the challenge.

Read in the paper this morning about Kaz involved in a punch-up,does anyone know if that is why he has`nt had a game?.UTA

I wonder if Harry Redknapp is connected with the Beckham move, he did try to bring him to Spurs a couple of seasons back.
The MLS standard is very similar to our Championship level, maybe Beckham's, 'one last challenge,' is to help the team Redknapp is ocnnected with get promotion.

For the life of me I can't recall which club Redknapp is currently advising.

Don't need any more midfielders.

Bournemouth I think. I am not sure if he is still given Howe's return as Manager.

We will miss Bridge (obviously…) but I hope that the application apparently displayed by Painter on Saturday continues in his absence (depth of squad etc). I share the misgivings about the keeper situation and base this on some very poor displays last season. These misgivings are not helped by the displays of TK this season which have been outstanding (best keeper in the league). The 'friendly ghost' for me... If TK's finger is still infected.
I wish Bobby Z all the best, no chance of him coming here now, if there ever was… Perhaps Murray could have the decency to leave football and become a monk, which would also put paid to some of the endless recycling and rubbish put on here.
It's Christmas soon and my mate Gus has presents for everyone... Whilst I do not wish to ponder his sack for longer than necessary, I feel that my Xmas wish of a new striker ( I know Hosko's back and our problems are solved but you will see my pretties, you will see) is still on the cards.
Perhaps our intrepid Argus journalist could ask at one of the press conferences whether 'my mate Gus' still considers this necessary and if funds are available in January, especially with our upcoming assault on the play off places.
Anyway, looking forward to Saturday, two strikers in a 4-4-2 anyone… Well maybe Bolton will.

Haha Beckham will not go where Redknapp goes and the MLS up to Championship standard?! Having reported on the MLS and now a reporter in the UK that is crazy! I'd prob go as far as saying MLS standard is League 2 at best.

If Painter gets over the halfway line he gets a nosebleed, how anyone can consider him in the same breath as Bridge is beyond me & i would rather see Calderon play, even at left back.

The standard of soccor in the MLS has improved greatly over the last few years and in my humble opinion the upper half of the league teams would certainly hold their own in the championship.

It is still the case that the better american players are leaving to play in europe but the game in general is is good shape.

Quick! Tell Gus, as he obviously got it wrong last weekend. Oh, hang on a minute....

And I don't actually think anyone was comparing Painter with Bridge, it is obvious there is a difference in class. But, by all accounts, he did well at Huddersfield.

Baldseagull says...

I can't help thinking that Painter benefitted from not having been in any of the video that Hudds would have watched to prepare for us.
If he is expected in the side, he may well be targetted as the weakest link in the defence.

First of all i dont have rich parents,i was adopted and pretty much took care of myself from 15,as for never posting before you,go back over this thread and you will see that i did.You see that is why i have a pop at you,you never get anything right!.

Work responsibilities and personal situation stops me from seeing as many games as i would like,so i try not to talk about what i dont know, you should try that sometime.

But my biggest gripe is that you never seem happy with the Albion, always having a sideways dig,so exactly who do you support?. UTA

Yes,i have seen MP play on quite a few occasions, and while he is no WB,you have to give credit where it is due,and on saturday at Huddersfield he gave his all, from all accounts, certainly a few lads on here that saw the game believe so.

I would love to see WB back as soon as possible, but if MP plays against Bolton, and makes a winning contribution,im sure we will all be happy. Any player that gives his all is worthy of respect, and needs to know they are appreciated by the fans.

I get your point about IC,sometimes i think he is undervalued, but with 3 changes in the back 5 last week,it was hard to keep a descent balance, and they scored when that balance shifted after MP being subbed (absolutely not blaming IC). UTA

Agree completely,he is very limited going forward, unlike your friend and mine Ini,but i will be content if he does a job and keeps davies out!.

If will Buckley is played on the left, then Marcos painters only job is to defend and when possible lay the ball of to him,im sure no one expects him to make the terrific runs Wayne does.Dont forget we should have Adam back for Bolton, and with a bit of luck Tomasz.UTA
