David on the spot for Albion
8:55am Monday 26th November 2012 in Albion By Andy Naylor
Ashley Barnes' spot kick is saved against Bolton
GUS Poyet will ask David Lopez to end Albion's penalty horrors – if he is on the pitch.
The manager has axed Ashley Barnes from the role following his second failure out of two this season in the 1-1 draw against Bolton Wanderers at The Amex.
Poyet will now look to Lopez, fellow Spaniard Vicente once he returns from injury or Stephen Dobbie – like Lopez an unused substitute against Bolton – who scored from the spot recently at Wolves.
The players have been left to decide the penalty taker between themselves so far but Poyet could make the decision, depending who is on the pitch, after Barnes was denied early on by Bolton keeper Adam Bogdan both from the spot and the rebound.
Poyet was so disgusted by the third penalty save out of six suffered by the Seagulls this season that he briefly disappeared down the tunnel before returning to see Bruno strike his first league goal for nine years in the second half, only for David Ngog to snatch an equaliser deep into stoppage time for Wanderers.
Poyet told The Argus: “I feel sorry for the next one. Who is going to take the next one? Ashley Barnes is not taking any more. That you can write down. That is my decision.
“David Lopez is excellent at taking penalties but he wasn't on the pitch. The one Dobbs took he scored.
“I don't think it would be fair to a player sitting on the bench if his first touch after coming on was a penalty but maybe the rules can be changed in the future so they can be put on and taken off, like in American football, to take a penalty.
“If it was David Lopez I would (make the decision), if it was Vicente on the pitch I would, because I know the quality they have got to do it. But if you ask me who is the best penalty taker at the club who was on the pitch I don't know.”
Paying The Penalty Ashley Barnes v Leicester: Saved Craig Mackail-Smith v Watford: Scored Craig Mackail-Smith v Leeds: One scored, one saved Stephen Dobbie v Wolves: Scored Ashley Barnes v Bolton: Saved

Have to say the "if" he's on the pitch is a very big one indeed. I haven't seen anything from Lopez yet which would warrant him getting on the pitch. Of course to be fair, he may simply need a little time to adjust to English football.

Hoskins will not play unless CMS drops deeper or Hoskins plays in his place. We do not play two strikers. Barnes does not play a striking role...Gus is stubborn and will not change this and arguably has a point; if you look at the chances created and the way we dominate games. Although i accept the counter is that we can't finish those chances off. Even if the striker we need, that i keep harping on about, arrives in January, this will system will not change.
With the exception of Leicester and possibly another away game that escapes me, we have mainly been the better side this season in all games played. We have been our own worst enemy at home and should be unbeaten. To have this expectation become a (near) reality is nothing short of a miracle. And however frustrated we become, never forget that the tactical system introduced by 'my mate Gus' is largely responsible for the top ten status we currently hold.
We ARE a couple of players short of a genuine assault on the summit (as MBTS has stated). But the system works, with a bit more quality and some minor tweaking we will prevail.

What absolute nonsense from Gus !! He has no idea who the best penalty taker is at the club !!! Really Gus!! You are not doing your job if you dont know your players. And your solution is to select one of two players, Lopez or Vicente because they have "quality". Lopez has so much "quality" he's only played one complete game all season. If he's got so much "quality" why isn't he playing every week ? Vicente isn't even fit enough to pull on a shirt, so can hardly be mentioned as a solution to the problem. Dobbie should have been playing instead of Barnes from the moment he signed. I believe Gus also spoke of his invaluable " class, quality and experience" so lets play the guy instead of sitting him on the bench game after game. Gus has made a mistake in persevering with Barnes when his limitations are there for all to see. He should not be in the team let alone be taking penalties.

Will Hoskins needs at least 25 minutes on the pitch to give him time to prove himself, as he did at Huddersfield. Perhaps with another game on Saturday, Gus will give him this time and give CMS just 60 minutes or so.
CMS still gives his all and chases everything.....we still love the guy.

One successful Championship manager said he adapts his tactics to suit the players at his disposal. Gus does the opposite trying to get players to fit his system - with the result that he is forced to try and fit square pegs into round holes - hence his constant frustration at the lack of quality at his disposal!!! Hoskins and Dobbie are quality - but he won't play them. Barnes is not quality - but does lots of things Gus likes. Who is the winner? Certainly not the team when Barnes fails to deliver. Certainly not the fans - who would love to see Gus break free from his self-imposed shackles and play 2 strikers.
Ah well! C'est la vie!

Millwall in the play-offs and us in 8th -ridiculous. We totally played them off the park earlier this season.
What a nonsense - Gus should have us top of the table - but he will never achieve it in my opinion unless he gets lucky with his system - i.e. he finds the extra player or two to realise his dream. In the meantime - more false hopes - more false dawns. I hope I'm wrong. I really hope Gus proves me wrong!!!

I agree Lopez will show his full ability in due time. Personally i would like to see Will Hoskins start ,we need him ,he`s got a good football brain,so let him prove it by playing him in a free roving role, this should not upset the tactics Gus wants to implement,it will allow WH to make a total nuisance of himself and upset any counter plans Bristol City might have for tomorrow.
If it works we get 3 points before facing "them" if it doesn`t,change it. But i would think this would give CMS a few more chances,if a defender has no idea where the strikers are coming from,he cant read the game so easily, with Craig up front on his own it`s more predictable, with WH or Dobbie having a free role it opens them up imho. Anyway, all this "Barnes is ****" stuff is boring because Gus likes him. Dobbie may be better going forward but then this exposes the back as Barnes gets through a shed-load of the ugly side of the game - which almost always goes unappreciated by everyone except the management and team-mates.
Every team in every era has a player the fans don't appreciate: Crumplin was slated for years, Wilkins likewise, Peter Smith even after he got his player-of-the-season award. All got picked because the manager - the man who worked with them in training - saw stuff the untrained eye didn't.

Every single player in the squad should be able to take them, and be made to practice on a regular basis. With the advent of penalty shoot-outs, we were actually one of the clubs confident of winning one not so very long ago.
So what happened? Is penalty taking now something ignored in training, and only for those who might feel the inclination to have a go every now and then?
I have backed Barnes before now, but have really come to lose faith in him, having seen him come up far too short in many recent matches. Sticking with him in the team is losing more points than I care to even work out now, so a replacement is long overdue. A replacement who can keep his feet when all about him, are losing theirs and blaming it on Gus!

As far as I'm concerned anyone can the penalties as long as they're prepared to step up to the plate and bury it top right bottom left who cares as long as it goes in !
The question should be would we have won or picked up points if we had scored the penalty and the adverse effects on the player involved on their all round contribution to the team.
Gus needs to take full responsibility, change the penalty taker and allow whoever takes over to welly it if need be, be it Bridcutt, Greer or Kzuszczak......

As is we gave the game away and now there is the possibility of lightweight Lopez getting a run out. Absurd. Reminds me a lot of the players Brighton had playing week in week out last season. Just off the pace and too easily knocked off the ball. It would be an error to play him. Bring in Hoskins or Dobbie for Barnes and that will do.
CMS is low on confidence again and just can't play the game that GP wants his lone striker to do. I can't see his long term future being with the club. If we can get our money back on him then we would do well do do so in January.
Vicente, no point in him staying. There is a need to free up a treatment table.
It's El-Abd we really miss. Dunk has lost his way and is a liability.
Thought Painter had a really good game and it was a bit of a mystery as to why he came off.

Nothing less than a convincing win tomorrow night will do. Palace on Saturday and we shall get nothing from that one!!
,and when it comes together, the league.
Gus reckons we are due a big win, anyone for Saturday!!!!!...UTA.

Penalties (and by inference referees) are a very significant part of the game so deserve careful consideration. We have had 6 so far this season - what's that, 1 in 3 games? Although there are always some exceptions I would prefer to bank on a striker who is used to hitting the net (that's why it was bonkers having players like Batty and Southgate taking penalties for England in vital shootouts). So anyone from Dobbie, Barnes, CMS, Buckley should' n't have a problem. But Barnes will have lost confidence. Also does need to be a first team regular of course. I'd give Dobbie a regular run in the team and give him the job.

Hello again Neville, it's been too long since we last hooked up, my old friend! How's the family? We really must meet up for a beer again soon!
(sigh)
You really do pick up on the smallest thing I say, don't you? Have you never heard of an aside? You'll spot them in lots of posts but will ignore them. I presume you will now go back and write 'really dumb post' in reply to all the other comments you don't care about in all the other stories?
You have - once again - entirely missed the point of my post. This is becoming a habit. It might be a good idea if you read and understand before replying. I know that you might consider it a waste of time as you have already made up your mind to disagree with me, but at least show some manners? For clarification this had become a discussion on Barnes and I voiced my opinion and gave some reason for it, fully aware of all irony. I was not dragging up a name that had not been mentioned.
Why not just skip right past my posts once you see my name, it will save us both the tedium of these exchanges. You hate me, I pity you. And so the world keeps turning.
Anyway, sorry, what was your point again?
PS: Apologies to all the other (ie worthwhile) posters on here for these spats too - these were never my intention. I have finally had enough of the idiots on this website (Neville, BB and the plank who posts under about a dozen pseudonyms) and will not bother again. Cheerio to Hovite, MTBS, Rhodes Seagull and all the other fine people on here with whom I have enjoyed chatting. Thanks for all the fish. It was fun for a few years.
It seems like we also agree on the quality of contributors to this site, which are, to a large degree, made up of armchair managers and wind-up merchants.
I'm quite tempted to leave them to it too...

Hope to see all the good posters past and present back on here one day, but for now it's best to quit and leave the dedicated idiots to it.
