Disagree re Lopez. He certainly needs match time but I think he is a quality player. Too similar to Buckley though and not as good is his problem I think!!

Might be a good idea to get Vicente fit before we start speculating about him taking penalties. In the meantime, Orlandi?

Reading between the lines:

Lopez or Dobbie will start in place of Barnes on Tuesday.

Spanish Dave in for Barnes tomorrow night then (as you say Bob!). Has played on the left before and should 'slot in' as opposed to Dobbie who requires a little more support from the midfield to cover his offensive tendancies.
Hoskins will not play unless CMS drops deeper or Hoskins plays in his place. We do not play two strikers. Barnes does not play a striking role...Gus is stubborn and will not change this and arguably has a point; if you look at the chances created and the way we dominate games. Although i accept the counter is that we can't finish those chances off. Even if the striker we need, that i keep harping on about, arrives in January, this will system will not change.
With the exception of Leicester and possibly another away game that escapes me, we have mainly been the better side this season in all games played. We have been our own worst enemy at home and should be unbeaten. To have this expectation become a (near) reality is nothing short of a miracle. And however frustrated we become, never forget that the tactical system introduced by 'my mate Gus' is largely responsible for the top ten status we currently hold.
We ARE a couple of players short of a genuine assault on the summit (as MBTS has stated). But the system works, with a bit more quality and some minor tweaking we will prevail.

What it is to be a lucky team? Just a shame that all our luck, at the moment, is indifferent. Bogdan was the man of the match, in my unbiased opinion, on Saturday. With a small change in luck we would have won 5-1 or 0-1.

If this is David Lopez' chance, let's hope he takes it and proves he is a better option than Ashley.
Will Hoskins needs at least 25 minutes on the pitch to give him time to prove himself, as he did at Huddersfield. Perhaps with another game on Saturday, Gus will give him this time and give CMS just 60 minutes or so.
CMS still gives his all and chases everything.....we still love the guy.

Gus is an enigma. He produces teams who play better football than any other team most fans have ever seen, but he is consistently frustrating fans with his refusal to use the quality attacking players at his disposal - because of his "head in the sand" insistence on playing only one striker. When he does "go for the jugular" so to speak it's usually with 5 or 10 minutes left - usually too late to make a massve difference to the result.

One successful Championship manager said he adapts his tactics to suit the players at his disposal. Gus does the opposite trying to get players to fit his system - with the result that he is forced to try and fit square pegs into round holes - hence his constant frustration at the lack of quality at his disposal!!! Hoskins and Dobbie are quality - but he won't play them. Barnes is not quality - but does lots of things Gus likes. Who is the winner? Certainly not the team when Barnes fails to deliver. Certainly not the fans - who would love to see Gus break free from his self-imposed shackles and play 2 strikers.

What a wonderful post.Lets face it why sign Dobbie on a 3 year contract if not to play him.Yes he was a big nightclub drunk at Swansea,thats why they got shot.But he can't be that unfit he should have 60 or 70 mins in him still.

There's an old adage in football:- "Strikers hunt in pairs". Gus hasn't heard of this obviously. He's obsessed with the Barcelona way. He's achieved it to a point...but will never get where he wants to be unless we get the right man (a la Messi) on the cheap or Bloom gets his cheque book out!

Look at Henderson and Wood of Millwall. Absolutely lethal together.
Millwall in the play-offs and us in 8th -ridiculous. We totally played them off the park earlier this season.

What a nonsense - Gus should have us top of the table - but he will never achieve it in my opinion unless he gets lucky with his system - i.e. he finds the extra player or two to realise his dream. In the meantime - more false hopes - more false dawns. I hope I'm wrong. I really hope Gus proves me wrong!!!

There are so many good comments and observations above,it is obviously a tough choice for Gus every game ,as to who he thinks will do the best job. I think the "Givens" are Barnes takes no more pens,Dobbie is wasted on the bench,not to say how the guy must feel not getting a game week in week out.

I agree Lopez will show his full ability in due time. Personally i would like to see Will Hoskins start ,we need him ,he`s got a good football brain,so let him prove it by playing him in a free roving role,this should not upset the tactics Gus wants to implement,it will allow WH to make a total nuisance of himself and upset any counter plans Bristol City might have for tomorrow.

If it works we get 3 points before facing "them" if it doesn`t,change it. But i would think this would give CMS a few more chances,if a defender has no idea where the strikers are coming from,he cant read the game so easily,with Craig up front on his own it`s more predictable,with WH or Dobbie having a free role it opens them up imho. Sorry Vince, have I misunderstood what you are saying above? You seem to be praising the two Millwall strikers and how ridiculous it is that they are above us in the league, but then state "We totally Played them off the park". By the way, didn't we actually beat them earlier in the season?

I think WH should start against Bristol City, he did great against them last season, just make sure he has the correct socks on this time. Ridiculous way to crock yourself.

Hello Campo,i agree not a great deal of mention for Dave Sexton,but i think there are very few old enough to give a qualified statement to show proper respect,although i`m sure we all pass on our sincere condolences.

All this penalty taking talk is really the pits!
Every single player in the squad should be able to take them, and be made to practice on a regular basis. With the advent of penalty shoot-outs, we were actually one of the clubs confident of winning one not so very long ago.
So what happened? Is penalty taking now something ignored in training, and only for those who might feel the inclination to have a go every now and then?
I have backed Barnes before now, but have really come to lose faith in him, having seen him come up far too short in many recent matches. Sticking with him in the team is losing more points than I care to even work out now, so a replacement is long overdue. A replacement who can keep his feet when all about him, are losing theirs and blaming it on Gus!

I like the way Gus said 'If Vicente is on the pitch'??? It was said about 10 days ago--if my memory serves me---that Vicente would be ready by Xmas--and many said WHICH Xmas?? Well if it is THIS Xmas we should have heard about him training and get 'reserve' games by now? Xmas is under a month away now!!!

As there's only ever 2 outcomes as to taking penalties (i.e. you score or you don't) are we questioning whether Barnes is worth his place in the side or do we need somebody else to take the penalties ?
As far as I'm concerned anyone can the penalties as long as they're prepared to step up to the plate and bury it top right bottom left who cares as long as it goes in !
The question should be would we have won or picked up points if we had scored the penalty and the adverse effects on the player involved on their all round contribution to the team.
Gus needs to take full responsibility, change the penalty taker and allow whoever takes over to welly it if need be, be it Bridcutt, Greer or Kzuszczak......

This all overlooks the fact that Barnes's penalty did not cost us two point - the chances we missed after we scored did, as did the goal we conceded.

As I have said before, I fail to understand how people can complain about the system we play when we totally ourplayed a side that have only just come down from the premiership.In fact we have dominated all home games this season, with the possible exception of Cardiff. Sensible comments. Usually agree with you tug509 but just on the QPR issue, I think the overall squad is poor. I have them down for relegation notwithstanding HR's arrival. Just a feeing that this is a rescue mission one too many for HR.

Bolton were a rubbish side and we should have been so far ahead at half time they would not have wanted to come out after the break.

As is we gave the game away and now there is the possibility of lightweight Lopez getting a run out. Absurd. Reminds me a lot of the players Brighton had playing week in week out last season. Just off the pace and too easily knocked off the ball. It would be an error to play him. Bring in Hoskins or Dobbie for Barnes and that will do.

Thought Painter had a really good game and it was a bit of a mystery as to why he came off.

Wash your mouth out Namgo,Bolton were rubbish because we allowed them to look that good. Your not the only one to be disappointed,look on the bright side,were slaughtering teams and they know it,so far they have the luck,what we have is better,skill,ability

Penalties (and by inference referees) are a very significant part of the game so deserve careful consideration. We have had 6 so far this season - what's that, 1 in 3 games? Although there are always some exceptions I would prefer to bank on a striker who is used to hitting the net (that's why it was bonkers having players like Batty and Southgate taking penalties for England in vital shootouts). So anyone from Dobbie, Barnes, CMS, Buckley should' n't have a problem. But Barnes will have lost confidence. Also does need to be a first team regular of course. I'd give Dobbie a regular run in the team and give him the job.

I've always read your posts and thought that I would have written exactly the same things. I don't think I've read much that I've disagreed with, same as Ringmer Rich.

It seems like we also agree on the quality of contributors to this site, which are, to a large degree, made up of armchair managers and wind-up merchants.

I'm quite tempted to leave them to it too...

Agree Cabs and TRF, too much pointless twaddle on here now days. On the plus side, the truth will prevail no matter how much negative invention is thrown in.
