Albion cruise to home win

Albion secured a much-needed home win as they beat Bristol City 2-0 at The Amex tonight.

Dean Hammond and Andrea Orlandi both scored in the first 26 minutes to secure a routine victory.

The Seagulls needed just six minutes to go ahead as Hammond headed home Liam Bridcutt’s cross after Orlandi had played a free-kick short.

Another Orlandi free-kick – again after Will Buckley was fouled down the right – brought an even simpler second goal 20 minutes later.

This time the former Swansea midfielder saw his intended cross swirl straight in from long range as defender Matthew Bates and keeper Tom Heaton got in a mix-up trying to deal with it.

Orlandi then curled just past the top corner.

City had plenty of possession and twice went close to halving the arrears.

Stephen Pearson shot against the top of the bar and Gordon Greer slid in to block a goalbound Neil Danns shot.

Orlandi fired over and Will Hoskins was denied by Heaton when clean through, both straight after the break.

But the near things did not matter this time as Albion cruised through an unremarkable second half.

A routine win, well ok I'll take that, but did we learn anything about Hoskins and Dobbie?
A double change in strike force and the goals came from Midfield.

No goals from our midfielders all season and then, like London buses, two come along at once! Vital that we get contributions from all areas of the pitch. Still sick about those dropped points against Wolves and Bolton, but all will be forgiven if we can win at Palace on Saturday. They seem to have hit a bit of a sticky patch but, of course, a certain G Murray will be back. UTA!!!

For me at this part of the season, Barnes is not up to it. Play Hoskin for a month and stick Barnes in the reserves, let his hunger build up. Then unleash him and he'll score like theres no tomorrow.

Happy Gus used his balls for a change although Dob's should've played longer

So am I right in saying that we scored one good goal and that the other was a fluke due to a mess up?

Neither Hoskins or Dobbie got on the score sheet and Dobbie only played for 60 minutes. Going solely by the BBC text commentary, and that is often wrong, Dobbie didn't manage a shot and Hoskins had two, is that about right?

As glad as I am that Gus bit the bullet and made the changes up front, it doesn't seem to have worked or did the text commentary miss a whole lot out.

I think our performance against Bolton, if the text commmentary was right, should give us more hope against Palace than that of today.

I am looking forward to reading the posts of those that were there to get the real linfo on today's match.

Ironically Brighton didn't play well tonight but won, the opposite to the majority of home games where they have played well but not won! There is a lot of luck involved in football and Brighton were due some. Bristol City were actually a lot better than their league position suggests and played some good possession football.

Gus has a thought or two, cms to start Saturday, Orlando again a class above, Hammond has still to stamp his ability on a game, painter did ok..
They played a poor side tonight, but made Bolton look poor Saturday with passing..
I hope Gus does not try and shock palace with a tactical change .. We are capable of winning this league,
Still one or two short in my opinion.

You're not far off Vegas. We were more impressive against Bolton. I thought it was a good plan to try Hoskins and Dobbie but it didn't really come off tonight and the shot count was low. CMS played superbly after he came on.

7 - 2 would have been a fair score if all chances had gone in. Hoskins should have scored when one on one really, Dobbie had one good shot and 3 other good chances went begging. orlandi was dominant this evening but for sure, overall this was a toned down and solid performance. Bristol started to come on to us from 50 minutes, partly as we appeared to let them a little - a better side would have caused far more problems. Average league position of 12th when we played them of the last 5 teams we have played - we need to be prepared to up the tempo for longer and sustained periods and take closer to 50% of our full on chances, to get wins against the better teams. Gordon cleared pretty much off the line and the crossbar helped us this evening - + our flukey 2nd goal for Andrea and the first was pretty soft too - so, all deserved but luck on our side this time round. We are often just a touch or nudge short of breaking through - very exciting at times - well, up till the 50th minute anyway. Really good one minute applause and tribute to Dave Sexton before the match was good to see/ hear. Will B slightly less good form than of late - I still reckon he should increase his running at players with the ball to passing/ crossing ration from 1:10 to 1:4. Bring on Saturday and 3 more points if we really take the game to them and show absolute passion, for which El Abd back would be ideal!!

Agree with many of the above posts. We were not as dominant tonight but did'nt need to be.. got a bit more luck, hoskins had a couple of good chances but to be fair i think needs a run of games to get right in the groove but overall everyone average. Bridcutt, bruno and orlandi the pick just a relief to get 3 points ,no injury's and no drama's leaving us all angry and frustrated. Sleep well.

Kuschak needs to practice his kicking. Bruno was excellent going forward again with some nice balls to Buckley who was slightly off form tonight and I was surprised Gus didn't try Lopez late on. Orlandi really looking good now. Dunk seems to have lost a bit of confidence. Bridcutt there as usual most the time to clean up others' mistakes - it was his sort of match. Dobbie and Hoskins both pretty quiet...Dobbie looked to be in that left midfield sort of Barnes position when i would imagine him more as an in the hole player, leaving Hoskins up front on his own like CMS usually is. Would be nice to see Orlandi and Vicente together one day!

Strange game tonight. 3 points are of course always welcome and the win was deserved, just makes a bit of a mockery of things given the way we performed on Saturday. Lets hope that GP learnt enough tonight to make the final tweaks for what I hope will be a master class against our friends up the road on Saturday. Id like to see the team that started against Bolton on Saturday take the field this coming weekend with the exception of Bridge in for Painter and Hoskins in for Barnes.
Agree with something Mbts states in that I also believe we have enough to win this division with only a couple more key additions.

A cruise maybe, but still a below par performance against a rubbish team.
Made worse by the utterly disgusting behaviour of the stewards who were removing Albion fans for no good reason from the North Stand. BHAFC you should be ashamed of yourselves for treating your fans in this manner. 10 stewards and several police officers are not required to remove a pensioner who is a season ticket holder for simply not sitting down on request. Disgraseful!

Moderate performance tonight - two poor goals from Bristol's point of view. Certainly not worth buying the dvd on this one. Still good to get a good result without doing a lot - City very poor despite their good possession football. Expect CMS to return on Saturday as we missed a bit of his energy at the top end of the pitch. And that's about it - cant think of anything else much to say about tonight's match!

Football - a funny game. We were the better side by far on Saturday, yet ended up with a draw. I thought we were pretty poor overall tonight, yet won comfortably (score-wise). For once the goal line clearances and crossbar strikes were Bristol City's bad luck.

Pretty poor game, in all honesty. But three good points. Thats all that matters over a season.
