Albion have some great Valley memories

The Argus: Elliott Bennett fires a brilliant winner at The Valley in 2009-10 Elliott Bennett fires a brilliant winner at The Valley in 2009-10

Albion will be looking to provide their fans with some more great Valley memories today.

The Seagulls have won on their last three visits to Charlton’s real home ground, including two games under Gus Poyet.

A little more than two years ago they thrilled a packed Jimmy Seed Stand with goals from Inigo Calderon, Glenn Murray, Kazenga LuaLua and Matt Sparrow to clinch a 4-0 win over opponents who were expected to be serious rivals for promotion from League One.

Our reporter Andy Naylor wrote: “In the best part of 20 years of covering the Seagulls I cannot recall a more complete performance.”

Actually, they played even better two weeks later when they won at Peterborough!

Calderon also set the ball rolling the previous season in what is seen as one of the defining matches of Poyet’s stint in charge.

The Seagulls had been playing well but not turning that into wins until a Tuesday night trip to The Valley in February 2010.

Calderon scored on a counter-attack and Elliott Bennett fired in from long range in a 2-1 win.

The first of those those three successive wins at The Valley dates right back to January 1985 when Gary O’Reilly scored the only goal of the game after just 46 seconds.

Charlton left The Valley at the end of that season.

Today they celebrate 20 years back at their much-loved home.
