Poyet happy with "decent" performance

Gus Poyet praised a “decent” Albion performance in the 2-2 draw at Charlton today.

But the Seagulls manager felt his side could have taken all three points.

Albion twice came from behind through Craig Mackail-Smith in the first half and Kazenga LuaLua in the second.

Poyet said: “I think it was a very, very entertaining game.

“Charlton at home have been really strong and difficult to beat and they proved it today.

“But, on another day, if we are a little bit more clinical we should be at least in front on the score sheet which gives you a different type of game.

“We were always chasing. Apparently that is the way at the moment when we are away from home apart from at Huddersfield.

“Overall it was a decent performance.

“I think we showed our way of playing. We believed, we went forward, we never tried to go back and defend.

“We played to win the game.”

Poyet was delighted to see Mackail-Smith score in confident style when clean through on the keeper.

He added: “Great goal from Macca. It looked like we were going to go in at half-time winning because we were looking the most dangerous.

“But then you don’t and after the break it’s a different story.

“It looks like you have got control of the game, then they score.

“We need to correct that but the desire, the ability, the non-stop trying to win the game were there.”

John, I'm as big a fan of Murray as anyone my friend. The guy is in my opinion Premiership class now and "yes" it was a bad if not terrible mistake to let him go. He has gone though and so sadly you, I and all that appreciated what he did for us have to let him go, tough as it is.
Hopefully a new guy in to replace him in January to shoot us up to where our general play warrants.

A much better performance after last week's poor showing. We should have strolled this, but we are letting good chances go begging. After a nervous start, we controlled the game fairly well. Saying that, it was a good game of football, although there were a few basic errors here and there which cost us.

It's always annoying to lose a star especially to the enemy but that's life. I've seen loads desert us in the past er by choice or pushed due to financial needs at Bha. Saunders was a classic example. If your employer can't afford a pay rise and the opposition dangle such a big carrot who can blame them . To most players clubs are employers not looked on in the same way as us fanatics. I have a hunch Gus has a big one lined up for Jan. I just hope we don't have to offer one of pur stars in exchange. We are 8th in the second division of the best league in Europe. Two years ago we were getting soaked at wet and windy Withdean in League one. I Am Delighted

What a difference 11 men make. I vote we play 11 every week. This was another good away point and another goal for CMS. If we can now get our home form going by putting more of these chances away I have every confidence we will make a top 2 finish.

Well done lads. The support over the radio was amazing. We are now 1 point from a playoff place, so with 3 of the next 4 games at home forest millwall Watford and away at Blackburn are winnable so 10 pts from a possible 12 is realistic but 12 pts would be brilliant.
Nows let's keep this going , move up the table , get Orlandi and Vicente fit, jfc back from his loan as we are so close to get automatic promotion. I see that Elliott Bennett , matt tubbs on the bench again, also theofanis gekas is available now could they do a job in January or does Gus have others in mind?

Really good game today, and probably a fair result. Charlton should have been two or three up before we got going, but once we did they struggled to live with us. Good finish by CMS and glad to see Lua-Lua make a positive contribution, albeit a little fortunate. Great atmosphere - so much more pleasurable than last week, and a nice touch to involve John Baine and Paul Samrah in the pre-match celebrations. Always been a good club Charlton and glad to see them doing well.

In my view this is a good away point at a side that wanted to have a party today at our expense!! However, if we have genuine play off aspirations we should be putting teams like Charlton to the sword. Our inability to take our chances is an ongoing theme and must be remedied, probably in the January window. A minimum of two good players who are clinical in front of goal are in my view essential to ensure a top 6 position. Without them our finishing position may well be similar to last year, which is still good, but the ambition is certainly higher. If no players come in we are relying on CMS, Barnes, Hoskins and Dobbie to step up a few gears, which is of course possible as the players start to gel with game time.

For sure Charlton having the opportunity to get 2 more within 2 mins of scoring their first was/ is a concern. The stats show we played clean, possession oriented football with a fair amount of desire today at a team of late in pretty good form with a tight defence. Who can get Buckley believe to run in the box? If he does this FAR more we'll get penalties, close range shots, create more scares and sometimes lose the ball - please don't pass it so much when in Will!! 2 cracking matches coming up. Who will take the next penalties when they come Gus? Wayne Bridge may stay calm under pressure - it feels as if he's played a few big matches in his time?? decide now

I don't generally go to away games, but went today, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Fantastic atmosphere generated by our fans, and overall we thought a point was fair. The only disappointment for me was, after agreeing with many that it was time for Dobbie and Hoskins to get more game time, to see them have little affect, especially Dobbie. He just doesn't look up to the task to me. And I know he's not there to defend, but he looks scared to make a tackle, mincing out of a challenge more than once I thought. CMS really needs some help, and I just can't see anyone in the squad currently being able to step up to the challenge. To be fair Orlandi showed what getting time on the pitch can do, he got better and better, but Dobbie and Hoskins have a long way to go imo.

Went to the game today and thought a draw was probably about right as we had a sluggish start & conceded early and could of let in a second. After that and especially for most of the second half we were the better side and showed great character to come from behind twice. If we are still in the mix come the end of the year, which I think we will be get three in during January, centre half, powerhouse midfielder and a hold up striker and we have a great chance of pushing for promotion as I am not sure we are quite ready with the current squad. Support today was top class.

I wasn`t at the game.
I did follow ,as best possible bbc,and Sky.
From what has been said by those who where there,we were very good,the stats support that.
Kaz scored,isn`t that what we all want?.
We played the most attacking formation ,i have seen since Gus started,lets hope it will become a habit.

33 posts so far and the ones relating to the article and the game I can count on one hand... It was a good entertaining game and had we buried the chances (including those missed by CMS who doesn't, contrary to popular opinion, walk on water) we could have walked it. I hope the injury to Hoskins isn't too bad, I think the jury is still out on Dobbie and hopefully we can get Orlandi back earlier than expected. There! Sorry to be boring and talk about the game but it does at least make a refreshing change.

Morning all, I've woken this morning feeling very optimistic about the second half of the season. I was just looking at the table and it was good to see that A, we are still in touch, B we have the second best goals against in the division and C that our goals for can be much improved with only a very few additions. What's also very pleasing is that it isn't just us the fans that know this. Tb and GP are very much on the boil and will know that there is a huge opportunity for us to get promoted this season with a little more investment. I know money doesn't grow on trees but with the crowds we are achieving and a big possibility that some of the dead wood will be shipped out in the transfer window to free up some wage, I think we might just see Tb dip into his pocket again to help us cross that line that will turn the draws we should have won in to wins. It's certainly not a case of taking a huge risk given as mentioned that we can ship a few out. Really looking forward to the next few games up until January and very excited about what January could bring and in turn where it could lead. Have a good day all. Uta

Just as a point of interest (to some) the bookmakers have us with shorter odds than both Millwall and Watford to make the play-offs... in fact you can still get 6/1 for the Albion which isn't bad at all though not as good as 12/1 for Millwall but what do they (the bookmakers) know...? And yes, I know, I too have strayed away from the subject of the thread. No-one's perfect.

Summing up what Gus said after the match it is clear that our not finishing more of the chances created is his, and ours, biggest concern.
CMS is a nailed on starter, his goals earn him that privilage, Gus has made that clear, but even he is not converting as many of his chances as he possibly should be. The question is, what will the club do about it.

IMHO we will not buy our way out of this problem, we don't have the money to buy two proven strikers, loan deals would seem to be the best option, and the new faces will probably come from prem teams.

There is also the problem of the fact that we don't seem to be able to head balls into the goal. Count the number of short corner we take, it's a pointer. When did our back four last put one in from a corner or a set piece. So what will Gus do about that, well we need an extra center back so maybe he will look for one with some airial ability in front of goal. This player I can see us buying rather than take on loan.

The line up yesterday was a tad surprising when it was announced but I think Gus will continue this approach as often as he feels he can. The likes of Hoskins, Dobbie, Barnes and Lua Lua are going to be given their chance to shine, at least untill january, and they had better do so. As some said on here yesterday, you can't impress if you are not playing, well I think Gus is going to play them and it's down to them to impress.

I don't think yesterday was an experiment, I think Gus has turned the corner and with the window approaching he is throwing down the gauntlet to the players.
I don't see january as a time when any clear out will happen nor do I see a whole bunch coming in but come the end of the season, that will be a different story. Three in during january and maybe two out, and that's it.

Their only purpose is to divide and conquer, he / they have got nothing better to do as they are dribble over their keyboard as they decide who they will be next.

You would be shocked at how many names are used for wind up purposes.

Brightonup has been using this site longer than I have, so he has also been witness to the lengths they go to. In fact we have lost a lot of very good posters because of this and it this board has just become one big joke.

In fact it is more interesting to expose them than talking about anything Albion related.

To be honest I am not so sure that Murray was the player to keep.
His first season away from us was a nothing year for him, it's only this year that he is doing anything big. Had we kept him and if he had the same first year but with us, I dare say that we would have been looking to replace him as a striker. Those that are banging on about why didn't the club meet his demands are simply discounting his form of last year.

Come january Palace will probably have three targets that other clubs will be looking at, and Murray might well be one of them. If he goes to someone like Stoke or Wigan, let's see how he does stepping up. I wish the lad well, I hope he makes it big but the fans of Brighton should concern themselves with our current players and those we might get in rather than harp on about those that have left.

Its a great shame Hovite,i read these pages for several months before signing up,and even i have noticed a drop in ,not just the quality of posters ,but the amount. I consider myself a bit like Vegas,i dont get to see as many games as when i lived in Brighton,but the heart is there,i suppose i have seen the Albion play around 350-400 times,but that was mainly in the 70s and early 80s,apart from getting to the Withdean whenever possible.
My point is that it is hard to contribute accurately if you are not there,and that will reflect in what i say,but my heart is so Brighton,and that is why wasters like these get by me,because i cant think of a sorrier passtime ,than being a wum or a troll. Having read the comments on here for many months I've finally decided to join in, hoping to add to the sensible discussion between true Albion fans.

One point no-one has mentioned about y'day's game was that when Barnesy came on he played centrally, backing up Macca. With Buckley and (soon after) Kaz on the wings this made sense. I've never been his greatest fan (to put it mildly) tho I've always felt sorry for him being played out of position and asked to do a job for which he's not suited. Perhaps being left out of the starting line-up also made him more hungry but I thought he played really well during that final half-hour.

The other point is that although as others have pointed out our defensive record is good, both goals y'day were avoidable. Great as Bruno is going forward, his defensive positioning leaves something to be desired. Both their goals came from that side.

Third point - what a poor stadium the Valley is. Makes you realise what brilliant facilities we have at the Amex. It's a brilliant time to be an Albion fan - so let's have less negative comments and concentrate on supporting the team we love.

Our inability to take our chances is an ongoing theme and must be remedied, probably in the January window. A minimum of two good players who are clinical in front of goal are in my view essential to ensure a top 6 position. Without them our finishing position may well be similar to last year, which is still good, but the ambition is certainly higher. If no players come in we are relying on CMS, Barnes, Hoskins and Dobbie to step up a few gears, which is of course possible as the players start to gel with game time.

Scoring 2 goals away from home is good...but then we also concede 2, despite having our first choice defenders back.

A point at Charlton was satisfactory and enough to keep us in a decent position in the league, more pleasing would be Gus selecting his best team for home matches and resting some top players and giving an opportunity for squad players at away matches,we should then experience far better results at the Amex and no doubt an increased number of goals.

But would we then start to drop points away from home, it's a tight rope that managers have to walk, balance is everything.

Can we just put this Murray business to bed, the facts are facts yes that cannot be doubted....but you must look at the bigger picture, if Murray had stayed then that means the entire outcome would be different, he could have broken his leg on the first day of the season! you can come up with 1,000 different ways alternatives!!! Let it go, football is a business, you have to deal with now, not last week or year, now.
