Poyet ready to do business

Gus Poyet knows the type of player he wants to sign Gus Poyet knows the type of player he wants to sign

Albion are ready to take the plunge in the January sales to boost their Championship promotion challenge.

And boss Gus Poyet has warned rival clubs they will have to pay a premium to snare any of his stars.

Poyet and chairman Tony Bloom are not big fans of the January transfer window but the Seagulls are prepared to do business at the right price for the right player.

That could mean ending their long search for a target man to catapult them up the table in similar vein to Reading, who landed Jason Roberts in January last year on their way to the title from seventh spot in mid-December.

Poyet told The Argus: “We are trying to look for that player that is perfect for us and even though in January we don’t like it we will do it because it’s a great opportunity. If that opportunity comes we will do business, no doubt.

“The problem is it needs to be the one, not just bringing in a body for the sake of it. If the right player is available and we can afford him we will bring him.

“It makes an impact, especially the way that we are playing. If we can maintain the way we are playing and add a couple of things in key positions it should make a big difference.”

Former Albion wingers Elliott Bennett and Craig Noone were targeted by Norwich and Cardiff respectively in the previous two January windows before eventually joining those clubs.

Fellow wide man Will Buckley, Spanish defender Bruno, midfield general Liam Bridcutt and top scorer Craig Mackail-Smith, who nearly joined Norwich in August, could all attract interest but Poyet believes Albion are now better equipped to hold on to their best players, because the wage gap has narrowed.

He said: “We are able to do a bit better in terms of wages and that can compensate. Of course, if a Premiership team comes in then you have got a massive problem.

“The only difference is they are going to have to pay a little bit more, because apparently we are the only reasonable ones. The rest are all expensive so we are going to be expensive.

“I am not saying a number, because the chairman will be upset with me for saying too much, but they are going to be expensive. We respect the players’ wishes but now we will be playing the game everybody else is, because I see too many players being sold for fortunes.”

Go for it Gus. Let's get that big bustling forward we so badly need. It would appear that Lampard may be available soon. He would do.

Yes, was just being facetious!

Don't think we need any more midfielers anyway, certainly not worth getting in another ageing midfielder when we're trying to build for the future.

Jones is not good enough, too old, and not classy enough. Austin is the "Marquee" signing or perhaps someone "unknown" from Europe (Spain), like Michu? Austin in reality will be going to the Premier League unless someone in the Championship can A) offer him a close to Premiership contract and B) give him a very good chance of promotion to the Premiership this season.

Not so sure about that. There seems to be a clear signal here that the club is very serious in seeking promotion this season, and the management are now prepared to spend in January for the right player(s) while holding on to the best of those already here. I actually believe it this time...

Who was it on here who kept on suggesting Nigel Reo-Coker for our new centre forward? :-)

Anyway, I'm still not convinced we'll get the player everyone is wishing for this January, as I'm not sure he even exists! And if he does, others will also be after him, and there are many teams in this division with deeper (parachute-lined) pockets.

I may be reading Gus' statement wrong, but it sounds as though we might be having to let a first choice player go in order to have the funds to buy one in.
Or maybe T.B. will surprise us all, like he did when he bought CMS.

Alan G Skinner says...
11:12am Fri 14 Dec 12

We must hold onto our key players. While I can understand the sale of Noone, I do not accept that the price paid by Cardiff was to good to refuse. We should not even consider an offer for Buckley for example, until £10m (all up front) is offered. If we continue selling our important players we cannot move forward and we risk other clubs perceiving us as a "selling club".

Yes, you could actually read it that Gus has just announced that his best players are definitely for sale - so longs as the price is right! However, this time I think his statement is genuine and the club wants to add to the squad rather than swap players.

This is really good news...I see alot of people are suggesting Kenwyn Jones upfront... I agree. Yes, he is 31.. but that is exactly what we need.

In my opinions, we need a spine. Striker, Centre Mid, Centre Half...all need to be big, strong and... yes... head a bloody ball!!!!

This will make all the difference.

The problem is though, Gus always comes up with a few tricks up his sleeve. In August, I didn't see people like Orlandi & Lopez coming in. They have come in, and let's be honest.. we don't need more players like this. Yes.. Orlandi is Ok..but not great.. and yet another 'fairy'...

Muscle is the key gus!

I thought Bentley was more of a Beckham-type wideman, rather than a Buckley?

VegasSeagull says...
12:48pm Fri 14 Dec 12

I have my cautious head on today. There are usually two ways to read most stories, and I think this is one that could be interpreted in two different ways.

Gus is warning anyone who comes calling that they had better be prepared to write a bigger cheque than they thought they would. So Buckley and or CMS could go if the price is right, is that why Gus is ready to spend, because he expects to lose a couple. If we do not sell anyone will be buy?

Gus fired a shot across the boughs of those that come calling for Buckley, 10 million
is the price, more than one team will want Zaha and the one that loses out might come for Buckley. 10 million nah, we won't get that but maybe 6, possibly 7 million. That kind of money would help us to buy and we could replace Buckley with a loan player on big wages.
CSM, another who might go, at a premium price, 6 million might get him. If those two went and we replaced Buckley with a loan deal we would have good money to buy.

I don't think Brighton want to sell anyone, and especially not our stars but money talks.
I think this article is telling us, the fans, that we might have to sell because the offer is too good to turn down, but don't worry, Gus and TB are ready to spend to replace those that go. I think Gus is also saying, don't worry, other championship clubs are not going to get our stars, the price will see to that, only prem clubs need apply.

Worthing Seagull! says...
1:21pm Fri 14 Dec 12

I imagine that Gus and his team of staff already have a few targets...it could be someone out of the blue and not even in England...as for Buckley being priced at £10m...I think that is mega wishful thinking, as much as I'd love to see it. More a £2-3.5m price I think would suit any team after him...that is realistic. Just thinking ahead to the Toon game, they have Ba & Cisse this time...I'm scared :(

Hovite says...

If we get offers that we just can't say no to, then yes, we could afford him.

Is Gus, 'ready to do business,' or does he know that he is ging to be, 'forced,' to do business.

Gee Jay says...

Desparate clubs with Eastern money may come in with 'silly money' offers for Will B., Liam B. Bruno or Macca, but increasingly, there is some signs of restraint coming into the market.
I hope we lose none of these guys.
I am yet to be convinced that we are ready for, or deserving of, promotion, but a play off experience could be good for a serious push next season.
The next four games will show if we are a top six side or not.

SMF20 says...
2:18pm Fri 14 Dec 12

I'm inclined to agree with Vegas comment re this story. It's definitely suggests to me that we will buy if the price and player is right but equally we will sell again if the price is right.
What I'd much rather see happen is for us to buy the 1 or 2 that change things as GP mentions and then have a real go. Should we not quite make the grade after this effort then perhaps then and only then, listen to offers for our top boys.
I've very faith that both GP and Tb will do whatever is right for the club. Both are both ambitious guys and here in lies my confidence that we will be there or there abouts as this season draws to a close.

but I am not sure th eplayers would want to go to them.

OPR and Reading, both in need but hardly that attractive. Southampton is another. Wigan and Villa may be tempting but I am not convinced it would be a good move.

If our stars depart to the prem division I think it would be mid table clubs that could get them as I doubt the top teams would want them, with the possible exception of Liverpool, maybe CMS or Buckley as a squad player.

Given GP and TB don't like the Jan transfer window, the comments would seem a tacit admission they didn't get it right in the summer and an admission we are a bit short of what it takes at present. Pretty much what I've been saying all season. 2 out, 2 in would be my guess plus a loan signing.

Newcastle Jets in Australia have just been given a winding up order, which would make Emile Heskey available. Could we get a short period of time out of him with a few goals. He is certainly a lump of a striker. I know he is getting on a bit, but would be inexpensive.

To be fair SussexRam, I don't think that it's an admission of anything.
We have a squad, that squad has us in 8th just a point or two out of the play-offs with plenty of matches still to be played.

Any business (players in) we do now can be seen as the finishing touches rather than a new start or a correction.
Any business we do with regard to players leaving is a different matter. We might see one or two back up players leave and it's possible that one or two stars may go if the price is right but that is not what Gus is looking to do.

2 out and 2 in would be my guess if the two out are minor part players but if two important guys go, then 2 out and 4 in would be my guess.

With only a couple of weeks or so to go before the window opens you can be sure that all the agents - much as we hate them - are frantically active, and you can be sure that Gus is receiving regular phone calls. I suspect this is the motive for his 'yes, we're in the market but only at the right price'. As for who we might go for I'm not going to speculate as I don't know the European market well enough and my feeling is that this is where new recruits are most likely to come from as generally they offer better value.

With regards to the Jan purchase of a striker, I would like to see Charlie Austin land on the doormat but can't see it happening! It's hard to guess who GP is targeting, i think we'll all probably be surprised when it does happen, hopefully it will be a pleasant one :)

I am not one to offer blind faith in Gus, in his transfer dealings or in his team slections, but he is our manager and as such I support him.

When Gus took over the management he had never done it before, he had things to learn. When we got promoted it was another level that he had not done before and there was more to learn.
We came real close to the play-offs last season, I hope Gus has learned from that run and makes decisons this year that can get us a play-off place. If we get into the play-offs but don't get promoted, yet more will have been learned.
Gus is growing just as the club is and we should not judge him against those that have been managers for several years.

The reality of it all is that no manager can build a promotion team in less than two seasons, not unless massive funds are available, and they are not.
The reality of it is that Gus has been great for Brighton and we really shouldn't expect more in such a short time.

Trust in Gus, hell yeah, would we be where we are without him?

The reality of it all is that no manager can build a promotion team in less than two seasons, not unless massive funds are available, and they are not.
The reality of it is that Gus has been great for Brighton and we really shouldn't expect more in such a short time.

Trust in Gus, hell yeah, would we be where we are without him?
Best bit of common sense for a while and I heartily endorse the sentiments expressed!

What Gus Poyet wants and what he gets are usually poles apart. It seems to me that it is the same old dream, and suddenly he wakes up to reality.

Whether we think he's any good or not, GP is the manager and we should all back him while he's here. When he's gone we back the next man. Etc. Etc. Just because we back him and wish him success doesn't mean we think he gets everything right. But we have to back him.

I have just put my TV on, the news station. 20 children, all aged around 6 years of age have been slaughtered in their class room, all shot to death. 5 other innocents dies, all adults, one other is dead, the shooter.

Kind of puts things into perspective doesn't it, I don't think I iwll be posting any more today. .

mexicOmart ( forest fan) reckons we will win 3-1,i`ll bite that hand right now!!.
Tough game against one of the most respected teams in our league.
The same starting line as Charlton, and we can take some of those chances we have been missing, and we had better get it right ,they have a very good away record, again, quality opposition that needs a quality response. 2-1 the ALBION.

You are sick Freeloader, tugs post is about a horrific event and has nothing to do with the Albion, and you see it as a brown nose opportunity to continue to play games.

Did you even read what he said.

You are the lowest of the low.

Thats what i was giving Ref to you brain dead small minded mug. What you can not stand is the fact im never wrong about the club.As Poyet has said above if the club is to get to prem-league this season he will need better players. It won't be done with night club super kids like Dunk or LuaLua.You have the brain of a retard Hovite, you can't even think for yourself. You never have anything to say about the club because you can't think for yourself.Anyone with half a brain can see Poyet takes a lot more notice of people like me than he does you.I just say it a few weeks before him on here. What you know about fooball you mug you could put on a stamp. Why come on here and coment about the sad events in USA you vile sad little man.You made know Ref to the story above as your so brain dead.

I am replying now because nursie should have given you your pill,s proved that you cannot see a joke when it hits you in the face.Back to the point which you do not seem to get,we need a finisher not striker this lad HAS to fit into the managers(GUS) system and unless the scouts or Mr Blooms wallet we are in problems.Sleep well
if we hadnt let murray go.we wouldnt be looking for a goalscorer.paid him his worth.and we would now be up there with cardiff.
