Albion days away from Ulloa deal

Leonardo Ulloa (carrying white boots) is still working with Almeria - but for how much longer? Leonardo Ulloa (carrying white boots) is still working with Almeria - but for how much longer?

Albion could be "days away" from clinching the capture of Argentinian striker Leonardo Ulloa from Spanish Second Division club Almeria.

The Seagulls head the queue for Ulloa's signature but they are still waiting for the £1.6 million rated 26-year-old to secure a Spanish passport to allow him to play in England.
Alberto Benito, Almeria's sports manager, revealed to The Argus: "The situation at the moment is that to play in England Leonardo needs a Spanish passport.
"At this moment we are doing the permit and we think in a few days he will have the passport.
"When he receives the passport Brighton is a possibility for him.
"I cannot talk about the price. We have received a lot of offers for him after he scored around 30 goals last season but we wanted him to stay here to get us up to the First Division.
"He wants to join another team and Brighton are very interested in him. Ulloa is very happy with the situation with Brighton but without the passport it's impossible."

Meanwhile, Albion are poised to add Latvian international under 21 centre half Vitalijs Maksimenko from Skonta Riga to their development squad.

All looks very promising, if both deals come to fruition and buckley sticking around for awhile longer yet very good. Now sort out his hamstrings. Perhaps a chat with Giggsy would help he suffered for many years when he was younger at man utd.
Maybe the cure was in the of field antics for him(alledgedly!).
This also begins to look like Gus will be around for awhile yet ,as i suggested a week ago this could be a defining week for the "project" for the next year as well, regardless of where we finish this season.
perhaps the team can settle a bit now and push on for the rest of the season knowing everything behind the scene`s still forward looking.

VegasSeagull says...
1:18pm Fri 4 Jan 13

Just read the short interview Gus gave to Sky Sports where he is talking of what one impact signing can do for the club.
The line that caught my attention, and relates to what the signing of Roberts meant to Reading, it reads, and I quote 'if you can bring in that kind of player you have a great chance. For us at the moment it is not possible, but I am trying to convince the chairman,' end qoute.

This would suggest that Mr. Bloom is keeping a very tight grip on the purse strings. This might suggest that some of those that we, the fans, would like to sign are just too expensive.

I am more than happy with players I know nothing about! it is not as easy to get let down as we are with some of our players at the moment. Time to bring through some youngsters and start the building blocks. One's an under 18 international and this bloke scored over 20 goals last season. We will see and only time will tell.

I think the answer is money. If you and I, 'know,' the players then the chances are the price will be too high for our budget.

I think it true to say that just because we the fans don't, 'know,' them, it does not mean that the footballing world doesn't know them. The Lativian lad, it is reported, has been tracked by many clubs, including prem clubs.

I think you would agree that so long as the lads help us get results, who cares who they are. Let's hope that in a few months time everybody in England will know their names.

Des, as I said, I think another striker is on the cards, a big name, not so sure about that.

The two we think are coming in are probably coming at a cost of about 3 million, maybe more, plus wages. With no one of note leaving that is all new spending, would we have another 4 or 5 million to spend without selling?

A loan deal for a, 'name,' that's possible I guess. Looking at the targets we seem to have aquired my thinking is another of similar ilk, if indeed a second striker is coming.

Signing any player is a risk, signing an overseas player an even greater one, Gus admits so. They bring with them Wives, Partners, Mums & Dads even, and in turn they too have to be happy in their new environment / culture.

We shall just have to see how it all pans out.

I hope the lad from Spain doesn't cost too much as it does all look a bit strange to me. If he was really any good at all surely a Spanish Primera side would have signed him? But then again with their economy have any of them got any money!! Hopefully performance related fee structure

Potentially great news about Ulloa and the young Latvian lad.
I think both will be very useful to have in the 1st team squad. I know The Argus have mentioned him linking up with the development squad but I personally would hope that at the age of 22 he is ready for 1st team action.
On the Dunk front... IMHO it would be a travesty to move him on at the moment, he is far better than his current forms shows and this is due to off field situations and not football one. Just look at Lua Lua now. Dunk is premiership quality potentially, keep the lad and give him a chance to shine again.

I don't see Dunk as a great prospect, yes last year he started the season well, but so did many other players in the squad. The lad is still young and he clearly has some footballing faults, I am just not sure that we need to spend the money teaching him.

I think it fair to say that the set up at Arsenal is probably the best in the country when it comes to evaluating young talent. It would appear that Arsenal have lost their one time interest in Dunk.

The fee he goes for will reflect the value he brings to our squad and this year I am afraid his value has slipped. I hope he goes on to have a great career but right now, we need a more polished defender.

Yeh, great idea, where is the cover then? He's been off key since the subject we are not supposed to mention, if you remember before then he was performing brilliantly. What is more concerning is our lack of pace at centre back, the Watford striker was two yards behind El-abd and left him for dead, Greer has no pace either. It's an area of weakness that needs sorting, and selling Dunk for peanuts is not a smart move.

If this is true Mark then absolutely, a move should happen and Dunk should be sold on.
I've just a feeling he will come good again once all of his off the field problem disappears though.
He may have lost his way and he may need a **** good kick up the backside, he may even have lost what he had when being coveted by premier league clubs. I just don't think we will know the answer for sure until the court case is over.
Either way, I'm sure that GP will do what is best for our club.

Mañana.
There is a story about two priests exchanging cultural differences over lunch in Rome one day.
The Italian Priest turns to the Spanish priest and says "do you have any word meaning manana (italian version) ?"
The Spanish priest replies " no we don't have anything that conveys that degree of urgency".
I wonder if this attitude might just apply to Mr Ulloa getting his Spanish passport.
I am not sure that we should wait for his situation to be resolved (a) because it might not before the window closes and (b) because, as Poyet pointed out when this story first broke, the Albion might lose out on other striker options we are apparently potentially interested in.
Seeing Poyet's reported interview on Sky Sports News I am not sure that Ulloa wil meet the criteria of being the 'Impact' player he (Poyet) thinks might make the difference . I wonder if he has any particular additional signing in mind and whether that player would be another forward or a Midfielder.
Pleased to see that we are signing the young Latvian defender Maksimenko. At least he should help provide some more defensive cover which has been sadly missing in recent weeks. Good to see that BHA aren't just concentrating on the striker signing.
Looking forward to the match tomorrow. Fingers crossed...

Dunk may be on his way and one should wish him luck--however, his off the field problems are like so many young footballers whose egos seem to get the better of them. Of course the matter has not been resolved by the courts and he may come out of it unscathed--but for sure it must be playing on his mind and therefore the quality of his play. I am sure we wish him luck and hope he learns from the experience.

If there is one thing we know for a fact it's that the wage bill is being cut, some of the squad are on the move.

No need to name the players, we all know who they are, Dunk is one more to add to the list, but he may well have been on some lists, he was on mine.

Four or five players go and their combined wages might pay for two replacements. To think that we can maintain most of the squad and add to it is just not on, we don't have massive financial resources.

I think the total number of our squad will be lower at the end of january than at the start.

I have no idea as to whether or not Dunk is, as you put it, too fond of the amber nectar.

Some players progress at different rates, some go flat and then just take off, Murray for example.

For me Dunk is still a prospect, I am not sure if we know how good, or not so good, he might turn out to be but right now that doesn't matter.

The wage bill is being cut and only those that are truly needed among our top 18 players will stay. Some will argue that Dunk is needed but look at who we have and add the Latvian as cover. David is proving to be very versatile and Painter might be kept untill the end of the season, again as cover.

We won't cut the squad in a big way but we will cut it. I would not be surprised if it turned out that Bloom has told Gus, cut X amount in wages and I will give you X amount to spend.

We signed Calde from the Spanish second division...i'm sure there are plenty of good players outside of the top 3 or 4 european leagues good enough for our first team - hopefully he is one of them
Most Spanish footballers (not sure about Argentinians though) even in the regional leagues have more skill on the ball and tactical awareness than the vast majority of english championship players. They tend to lack the physicality, pace and agression of english players and can find the weather a bit disturbing!

Dunk just needs to play football to find his feet and confidence again. Whether loaned out or sold on.
Pure dream world stuff. You think top scouts have not been watching him for years like with Elphick. Both have very little pace.Plus like Poyet said after the palace game Dunk can't control the ball. When these big clubs watch players like Grant Hall they also see Dunk & his friends about.

Silly boy.
Top post my friend.Players like Dunk,Barker,Anton Rodgers, and that Cook lad upset the hard working players like Nooney said.As soon as them & their friends are off the wage bill the better.Top prem-league players don't go for small money lol.
