Albion kick off Cup day in style

Albion kicked off Sussex’s big FA Cup afternoon in style by knocking out Newcastle at The Amex.

And they did it in some comfort in the end.

Andrea Orlandi and Will Hoskins scored for the Seagulls in a 2-0 win over a lack-lustre Toon side who had skipper Shola Ameobi sent-off between the two goals.

Orlandi showed superb technique to turn home Wayne Bridge’s low cross on 33 minutes with his back to goal after a fine diagonal pass by Gordon Greer had got Albion in behind the defence.

The Championship side deserved that lead after making a terrific start.

Ameobi was booked for fouls in the 47tth minute, on Dicker, and then 17 minutes later, on David.

Toon responded well to going down to ten men and Liam Bridcutt made a superb block to divert a goalbound volley by lively sub Sylvain Marveaux over the bar.

Albion, though, finished the game strongly and David’s precise through ball sent sub Hoskins through to slot past Steve Elliot in the 87th minute.

And that is why Poyet is absolutely the man for this club. Some of the knockers on here in recent weeks have been simply ridiculous. Ok it may have been an under strength Newcastle side, but they still had plenty of quality about them. But Poyet got the team selection and tactics spot on with so many of his players showing their class. Any team goes through peaks and troughs, even world class teams like Man Utd, City or Barcelona. So to jump all over the manager when this happens is simply silly. Delighted the players and manager got their just rewards today as Brighton and Hove Albion as a club continue to evolve towards great things (which is best done over time!!!). SEAGULLS!!!

We deserved to win, that simple. Any talk of them going down to ten men as th excuse for their loss would be wrong, we outplayed them in the first half, and showed great determination in the second.

A depleated Newcastle, yes but you can only play those that are in front of you. Newcastle still had some class on the park but we didn't allow that class to come thru.

Gus got it right and he also used his subs wisely. I was a tad concerned about Ankergren getting the nod but when called upon, he delivered.

A good money maker for us today and another to come. At our level the money from two good FA Cup matches can go a long way to buying a player.

Best TV viewing of the week end!!! Brilliant---OK Lopez rolled--that's football!! he WAS fouled. So glad Hoskins came on and scored---what a pass by Greer and what a 'get' by Bridge and then WHAT GOAL. Must create a lot of confidence for the team. So, Newcastle were not at full strength, but we stopped their boys stepping up to the mark. Good report on Sky and ITV admitted we were the better team. This can do nothing but good for the Club UTA

Great performance all round today, but the Toon really didn't show up. We did make them look very poor with our passing game. Thought Bridcutt was outstanding today, and also Bridge. That first goal was outstanding, and fair play to Bridge for chasing the ball down and delivering a quality ball. And as for the Orlandi finish, pure class. Little nerve racking towards the end, but the second goal sealed the deal. Lopez should be ashamed of himself for getting Ameobi sent off, he hardly touched him, and he was trying to pull up. Poor ref decision influenced by bad acting. Hope Gus has a word, just not right. Up the Albion & bring 'em on...

A famous victory !! and what a good game from Lopez at fullback. Bridcutt must not go. Bridge, Lua Lua etc played brilliant - even Barnes / Dicker did a great shift. Question : If CMS goes maybe Hoskins ideal replacement
? to go with "the cyclone" if we get him. BHA look back on track.

You see players doing it all the time unfortunately, although from my position close by, he caught him late and the player felt it, so no argument on the SO.
But just so typical of a Troll like you to attempt to focus on a negative you definitely don't wear the blue and white!! Good Bye !!

Okay, David rolled, but he WAS fouled and it was a stupid tackle by Ameobi. Don't forget he could have been booked even before his first yellow.

Bridcutt was awesome - would easily get in several Prem teams - and I though Orlandi just oozes class. Bridge superb, centre-halves solid, David actually looked like a right-back. Quality everywhere.

And I know it wasn't Toon's 1st choice XI but they are still Prem players earning Prem wages for a Prem team. Let's not cheapen our win.

Do people on here, and commentators, really believe an experienced ref like Probert is going to be conned by rollovers? First time of watching it looked like a kick. In slow-mo these things always look worse. Probert is an elite full time referee and played it by the book. The bookings were regulation stuff which was a shame. No way was it a dirty game.
I thought Newcastle played better when Shola went off. They should have put the effort in earlier. Bridcutt ran the game and was superb.

It struck me that there was very little protest from him or his team mates for either of his yellow cards, that tells you something. Pardew only shook his head, at his player or the ref, who knows but I think I can guess.

A very good win against a very poor Newcastle. Superb technique from Orlando and calm finish from Hoskins. 2 wins in a row, can we continue on this form?

Eddy B says...
4:32pm Sat 5 Jan 13

Impressive and comfortable performance. Newcastle were a shadow of the team we beat last year.

Thought Hoskins showed good touches when on and more of a threat than CMS to be fair and excellent finish for his goal. Similarly Lua Lua seemed to create something every time he got the ball (why does he not play more?).

Both full backs were excellent. Lopez does set the heart racing with some of his precision passes inside at right back but everything came off for him today including the little **** one two and through ball assist for Hoskins (the through ball being rather a rarity for Brighton). Still think Hammond looks a little off the pace sometimes and can be caught in possession as he was for practically Newcastle's only chance in the first half, but Angerken did well.

Also thought Dicker had a good game and could possibly be ahead of Hammond and Croft in the pecking order, and Bridcutt as always superb in defence albeit a little wasteful with the more creative balls sometimes. Orlandi has that extra time and class on the ball and a fantastic finish.

Eddy B says...
4:35pm Sat 5 Jan 13

Wouldn't blame Lopez for the sending off, it was a foul and he was limping for a while afterwards after being caught high. The sending off was harsh but as often happens Newcastle actually improved for the last 15 minutes so it didn't change the result.

Excellent result today with some good controlled Football. Great first goal from Orlandi - class finish. Delighted Hosko scored today but David's measured pass set him up perfectly.

Whilst I think you can pick out two or three players for special praise today, I don't think any can be picked out for having a poor match, they all performed.

I feel sure that Barnes started because David had to take up a defensive role, at Ipswich it worked so why not go with it again, what did Barnes do wrong?

I bet there are a few teams hoping that tomorrow's draw doesn't bring them to the Amex.

why don't you bore off you absolute nerd, I've got no interest whatsoever in your opinions and always skirt past your posts, you must be the dreariest person in Las Vegas, spends most of his life posting drivel that no one is interested in apart from maybe 1 or 2 other equally sad individuals
Oh dear - either a JCL or a Palace fan !
It hurts this "little turd" to see the Mighty Albion enjoy a great victory. Whether it was against a less than complete side or not,is not the point. We are in the 4th round.

We did a quality job today, and thank goodness no injuries. Every Brighton player and fan will enjoy this evening, except "little turd". SEAGULLS!!.
'little turd' ..... is that what your missus likens it to when u drop your cacks..... lol...... lol

Brilliant stuff today, hoping for a kind draw in round 4.
Hoskins goal to seal it was very good, but it was not until i saw the Orlandi goal in slow motion from behind the goal that I appreciated just what a super skilful finish it was.
All rose to the occasion.
Newcastle were very poor, 8 year contract for Pardew? Not sure about that.
An 8 year contract for Gus would be good though! UTA

Go away you vile sick animal. What has that post got to do with football.Anyway what a performance from the team today.I thought Bridcutt & Orlandi were out of this world.Even Barnes had a very good game,he worked so hard today.Made me so proud to be a Brighton fan today.Still got my top on now.

Interesting that Jim Beglin on ITV named Bridcutt as man of the match. Then I had Talksport on and their men said Bridcutt was man of the match. But towards the end of the match I heard the announcer at thye Amex announce that the man of the match was Bridge. I know it's different opinions but seems all the commentators and experts agreed that Bridcutt was the man of the match but he didnt get the award at the match itself.

I'm no troll, I've supported albion my entire life, haha I'm very happy we won, but I'm also a very realistic and honest supporter. Nufc were poor, they sat back, of course they didn't have the intention to lose, but did they really have the intention to come here and win? no, a heap of injuries, playing in europe, bottom end of the prem league, Alan Pardew didn't exactly look upset at his team losing. Nufc have top scouts no doubt so they knew exactly how we play at home, so sitting back, slow play is not going to get you a win at the amex, but he set his team up like that....what does that tell you? and for the prem players on the field I doubt they are being played big money as someone else said, since when has money been a reason to play better? 90% of football fans are to blinded. Even though I support albion I can still take a step back and really see the club.

Obviously it is too much to expect that Albion fans can enjoy success without it being sullied by posers protesting they are just being realistic, telling it like it is and congratulating themselves and each other on their libellous comments.

In any other walk of life these triffids would be taken to court for their comments. Alan Pardew and Lewis Dunk for instance would win substantial damages.... but of course the sad fact is the trolls can hide in their anonymity, lie about their allegiances and abuse the players and managers with impunity.

But - you cannot disguise what you really are - you betray yourself with every mis-spelt word and every pointless, negative comment. Case closed!

Can you just leave this website for the everyone's sake?
In case you haven't noticed, you tend to make yourself look slightly stupid.
Also, why is it you claim VegasSeagull to be a nerd when you yourself comment on this site?
His comments are actually interestingl, whereas your comments have no value whatsoever. The only conclusion that I can come to is that you have too much time on your hands so you spend it alienating people for your amusement.

You see players doing it all the time unfortunately, although from my position close by, he caught him late and the player felt it, so no argument on the SO.
But just so typical of a Troll like you to attempt to focus on a negative you definitely don't wear the blue and white!! Good Bye !!
nonsense. the guy never touched lopez. lopez then rolled around had time to see if the guy had been booked again and promptly got up after.it was a discrace.i will always follow bha,but dont want to see that from one of our players.hoefully the fa will step in,rescind the red card and fine lopez a months money or similar.

Wrong.

This is a two bob website for anyone who claims to have close connections in the game; you should be chatting football with people you can have a proactive influence with, not come on here with your anti club and anti Gus mantra trying to recruit people on your lonely march.

If you were who you claimed to be, you would actually be involved in a football club at any level and you wouldn’t be wasting your time on here. So in that respect, relatively this is a two bob web forum, I wouldn't be on here if I had all these so called contacts!

You even lied about meeting up with me at the Bandstand after getting me to name the time and the place and telling me I'm not in your league lol.

Freeloaders, thetaffter, WisdomSpeaks, SeagullKid etc etc.

Shall we now have a row about who is sadder, me or you.

Donkey!

VegasSeagull says...

Two bob site, well I guess it is if that is what we make it. Any debate forum is only as good as the content placed by the posters.

There is nothing wrong with pointing out what you see as issues, be they with the players, manager or the board, without 'issues,' we would not have debate. For the most part it's all in the delivery, we can all make out point without going into the gutter.

I get the feeling that some just want to be provocative, they are looking for a response, and that is fine, if they have a valid point. To be provocative for provocative's sake, is just a waste of time.

A two bob site, nah I have it at a buck eighty and with just a tad more understanding we can get it to two bucks.
