Gus so pleased for on-target Hoskins
4:15pm Saturday 5th January 2013 in Albion By Brian Owen
Will Hoskins scores Albion's second
Gus Poyet admits he was delighted to see Will Hoskins get off the mark for the season – and calm Albion’s nerves.
Hoskins netted for the first time at The Amex with a late second as the Seagulls beat Newcastle 2-0 in the FA Cup.
His strike rounded off a fine display by the hosts, who went ahead through Andrea Orlandi in the 33rd minute.
Boss Poyet said: “I had a chat with Will last week and told him before the Ipswich game ‘You will have a chance’.
“He had a great chance to score in the last seconds (at Portman Road).
“Today I told him he would score a goal.
“I know how difficult it is for strikers when they come on for 20 minutes or half an hour or even playing from the start and not scoring. He was desperate.
“He settled the game for us because there were nerves in the stands and among the players as well.”
Poyet praised his side’s display as they saw off a makeshift Newcastle line-up.
He added: “I’m honest enough to say we were lucky with the missing players from Newcastle.
“We needed to take advantage and I think we did that.”

To the club(mr barber take note) . Going back to the goldstone years the club's biggest mistake was to over cook ticket prices, thus reducing the crown and consequently the atmosphere . THIS MUST NOT HAPPEN AGAIN . The atmosphere was helped in part today by newcastle's excellent fans but remember there were sub 20000 Albion fans there today . WHY INCREASE CAPACITY .
Be very careful this has happened before !!.
Great afternoon entertainment .

Live TV often reduces the attendence number, I know of a few season ticket holders that stayed at home to watch the game.

For me, Hoskins has the attributes of a premiership player (as do a number of our players).
It would be ironic if with all the transfer speculation over CMS, Bridcutt and Buckley, Hoskins becomes a target. I hope not - he will be a pivotal player in the push for the playoffs.
As for Bridcutt, somebody is going to have to offer us very silly money to take him away.

Far Gull it is my understanding that both teams have to agree the entry price for cup games, it might be that Newcastle were insistent on the high ticket price.

On thread will love to see if Hoskins kick on now ,if he can we will have minimised striker requirement and although I am at pains to say Barnes and dicker are now shoe ins to as they bring balance and were both in during our best form earlier in the season. ?

Just a question about attendance. Yes gate down on usual Amex attendance--but some would have stayed at home to watch on TV therefore gate money down however how much would the club earn from live TV?? Maybe would make up for the difference?? I do not know, maybe someone has the answer??

Agree with the reasons for the attendance. Unfortunately when it's on telly and it's another £30 or whatever on top of your season ticket it is tempting to stay at home.
Well played everyone. Just a thought for Dobbie, must feel like the forgotten man with all this talk of Hoskins, Ulloa etc. Wouldn't be surprised to see him moved on which would be a shame before he's had a chance.

It's true to say that we didn't beat the best Newcastle can field, we know that, but we did beat the best they had to offer today and that counts for something.
Some people on here have been bemoaning the standard of our developement squad, otherwise know as the reserve team, it would seem that even prem clubs have similar issues.
Brighton ruled today, even when they had eleven on the park. Newcastle could have had a better team out today, not their best but better, and we still would have won. We should also remember that we didn't have what some would say is our best eleven on the park either. Kz in goal, Bruno, Buckley and Vicente, all of whom could normaly play if fully fit.

How does that compare to the TV revenue. It may have been a good idea to have had £20 max for this game. As you mentioned the Amex would have been near full with an increased atmosphere. From my perspective it was good to watch the game on TV but nothing compares to actually being at the game. I couldn't go had flu so gave my ticket to my son. Atmosphere, result, quality of Brightons play and two good goals. I thought Bridcut, Orlandi, Lopez, Hammond and Bridge were all on top form, desire Hammonds clear lack of pace.
Fantastic entertainment almost compensated for the cost!
Applause for Buckley, along with Hoskins cool finish and Lua Lua's desire and belief.
The Bad -
Cost of ticket - OUTRAGEOUS
The Ugly -
Shola Amiobi's lack of self discipline.
In a word -
Nice to see our good football rewarded with a justified result when so many games have been blighted by missed chances.

Exciting week ahead to look forward to with 2 game changing arrivals on the horizon before the Derby game. I'm really looking forward to seeing if Ulloa is indeed the man we have been waiting for, you can't say it is a rushed purchase or that his record is questionable so here's hoping.
As for the 2nd guy, a fella they call "king" I'm looking forward to seeing him on the pitch too, apparently he is a little bit special :)

Yesterday was a fantastic afternoon at the Amex and those who dwell on the result being more to do with the 'toon' line up than the brilliance of our performance, make a somewhat spurious argument in my humble view.
Watched the game again last night and was amazed how different it seemed on tv - I guess because they only focus on the ball. At the game it felt like we were in total control apart from 10 mins late on when NU had a couple of dangerous attacks.
I thought Bridcutt was immense and am pleased to see ITV made him MoM, unlike the sponsors who gave it to Bridge, tho' he was very good too, as was Orlandi.

Of course, some supporters can't make the Amex experience for numerous reasons I'm sure- finance, ex pats, health etc, etc- and it's their absolute right to chose not to attend when the match is on the telly and good luck to them.I'm not sure of the pricing yesterday, the ticket being activated through my season ticket, I'll have to check my bank statement, but if as it seems there was a price hike, then I do think the club made an error of judgement and treated the fans badly. With so many season tickets sold, yesterday was the perfect way to encourage fringe supporters, particularly kids to attend. I'm sure I'm not alone in being happy for unsold seats to have been taken up by those paying a lot less than I.It is after all the Community Stadium. I appreciate however that the club does have to balance the books.
Back to tv coverage. I think one of the points sometimes missed by those who can't/don't attend live on a regular basis is around discussion about who Gus should sell when other clubs come calling. Of course, football is largely to do with transfer dealings, but I sometimes think that when tv/pc fans say sell Buckley or Bridcutt if the fee is right, what they miss is the the role those 'stars' and 'heroes' play in supporters lives, something I'm not certain is the same for those who can't share the live experience. It's only my opinion and I certainly do not think non attenders shouldn't be able to express their view, of course I don't, but I do think it's something to take into consideration. Anyway, bring on Luton(no disrespect) or Man Utd UTA

The decline in attendances generally for the F.A. Cup is also due to managers often not playing the full first team. If you pay top prices for a match you want to see your best players and a decent game. It's ok when you have a second string of Internationals to come in or, as in Newcastle's case, it is forced on you but there is far too much 'molly coddling' of players these days and not enough consideration for the fans. All this talk of players being tired after half a season is just psychological nonsense. How come other manual labourers can work all year and play football for 'Amateur' clubs with only a few weeks off in the summer? I think we should all try telling our bosses that after April this year we will be a bit tired and want three months off and also want to be rested regulaly during the winter.
I realise that managers have to gve fringe players a game occasionally but that should not be in the F.A. Cup. And, yes, you can have promotion and a good Cup run.

Bridcutt was absolutely superb and if any Premiership club were looking for a midfield general he would be great but hope we keep him here. He certainly seems to have learned a lot from Makelele.
I feel for CMS as I still think he would do great back in a team which plays more direct and get the ball forward faster. I think it would be best for all concerned to cash in if theirs a chance. Great lad and full of honest endeavour. Maybe playing together with Hoskins would give him more of a chance but doesn't seem likely to happen.
A thought for the Newcastle fans who I think are some of the best in the world. Great talking with them after the game. They were very complimentary about us and the stadium.

Was it just me that missed Mr Pardew lack of handshake after the game & immediately straight down the tunnel or did anyone else notice
Newcastle should never have sacked / replaced Chris Hughton with Pardew.
And where was Steve Harper, not even a second choice GK Hahaa

A lack of investment has brought them to where they are, they really need to pick up a couple of decent players.Pardew knows how to sell, or at least the owner does, not so sure that they know how to buy.
Brighton looked quality yesterday and that can only help when it comes to signing new players.

I thought we battered Newcastle and got our rewards. So pleased for Hoskins as he has been patiently waiting his chance. Having watched his performances in the 'reserves' he has consistently shown this quality so I hope he now gets a run of starts because he could save us money.
A good day all round. Now for the other United! What a fantastic RVP equalising goal. Sublime.

Gus please don't put Gary Dicker back on the bench as we need his presence and link play on the pitch.

Unfortunately the problem is that GP's personality is of a man who thinks he knows it all. There's none so blind as those who don't want to see and false pride is a very disturbing trait.
As I've said before on this site - many Brighton supporters get carried away by 'big' name ex players and Gus is a classic example.
I have nothing against Gus except that I have never rated him as a man manager and football management is not rocket science - it's like any management in as much as you have to manage the people first and foremost to get the best out of them.
Surely most people can see that Gus is a fearful manager. Just look at the way we play Blah Blah Blah ....................

Sometimes enforced changes can be a revelation, who would have thought that David could replace Bruno in such a positive way. This change saw Barnes playing in front of David, that too seems to have worked, they appear to have struck up a good understanding and quickly too.
Fringe players going out don't really affect the starting eleven but new signings do. If three new guys come in will that mean four of five games trying different combinations. Ulloa will probably take the field with CMS and without him, with Hoskins and or Dobbie, and without them.
Let's hope that by the time we reach the playoffs we have a pretty good idea of what our top eleven are and that they are all fit to start.

Why was Hammond booked? I must have missed something for that? The only player in the team that looked broadly off the pace I thought
We bossed them, imposed our game from the start
We had loads of space to go through the middle - we're still a little uncertain when that happens - something to practise and take advantage of
Great performance!!

All these posts about being about 5000 down on the crowd. In a lot of areas in the ground it didn't look any less than normal. You should remember that for home league games ALL season tickets are counted even if the holder does not turn up. Cup games its only who actually turns up are counted.
Attendance is calculated as you enter the ground fo all games.

I still feel so sorry for CMS , i really think that Gus should play CMS and Hoskins together .... and lets wait and see if this guy comes from Spain.
Brilliant performance today .. i thought all the team were awesome .. especially Bridge and liked what Lopez was doing and of course Bridcutt... I think Bruno might struggle to get his place back with Lopez playing like he is .. lovely pass through for Hoskins to score ....
Well done lads ... GG
