How Vicente's comeback chance was missed

Vicente was left out in the cold after Orlandi failed to make it 3-0 against Derby Vicente was left out in the cold after Orlandi failed to make it 3-0 against Derby

VICENTE’S Albion comeback is creeping ever closer – but he should already have played.

The Spanish playmaker is in the squad again for the game at Birmingham tomorrow after returning from five months out with thigh trouble as an unused substitute in last Saturday’s 2-1 win against Derby at The Amex.

Vicente was primed for a cameo role if fellow countryman Andrea Orlandi had converted a glaring opportunity to score his second goal of the game and put Albion 3-0 up in the second half.

Manager Gus Poyet said: “He has trained all week. I said to Andrea if he had scored the third goal when he had that chance in the second half Vicente would have played for 25 minutes.

“Then they scored, it became a little bit of a tricky situation and I didn’t think it was the right moment to play him, because we need to control the game for Vicente to be important and we were not in control.

“Just to put him on to defend I don’t think is the idea. I am sure there is going to be a time when we play him, either from the beginning giving him an hour or making sure he can play 45 or 30 minutes.”

Looks to me like someone who is fed up of sitting on the sidelines in the cold, and who wants to get out there on the pitch!

Chalk and cheese springs to mind when looking at the picture attached to this story.
On the one hand you have a chirpy looking chap, smiling and without any protective clothing against the weather aside from a coat and on the other, a guy wrapped up for the winter freeze looking like he would rather be anywhere than where he is.
Guess which is Dicker and which is Vicente? Answers on a postcard to BHAFC, Why am i here competion....

Just a bit of light heartedness of course.

This guy is immensely talented and may well be the difference betweeen us making the garde and not.
I for one want to see him back and playing asap, hopefully with a smile on his face.

IF Vicente plays again for Albion I really do hope he comes good---but really with all the other things going on with Albion at ppresent--Ullao etc I have to say that Vicente is rather like 'yesterdays news'--but then agian if V does play and more regularly then I hope I am proved wrong. Have yet to see photo of Vicente smiling---not like most of the others in the squad!!

I thought that at the time... if we'd gone 3-0 we would have been cruising and I felt Gus would have given Vicente and Hoskins game time. As it was, Albion made it hard for themselves and more defensive minded subs were made.

It's a shame for both players as Hoskins needed the chance to stake his claim ahead of increased competition up front and it would have been easier for Vicente to stroll around against a demoralised derby team than it will be away from home against Brum and Blackburn.

Off topic slightly.

Is anyone in the know regarding Stephen Dobbie?

I was so excited when he signed for us. A class act wherever he has been, GP stating more than once that we would love this guy and of course a 3 year contract.

Seems to me that he, Vicente, has used the club, When we first heard of him coming to B&HA FC he stated all he wanted to do was play football, we all no he has had an injury but as stated above he looks like he does not want to be sitting there never mind wanting to play football. I no people say he is probably the best player ever to play for the Seagulls but that does not make him the best player we have had at the club and again many will have there favorites. The best players IMO are the ones who put the club first, work hard on the pitch and to date we have not really seen Vicente do this. I like many would like to be proved wrong but from what we read on here and the very little we read about Vicente on The Seagulls site I do not hold out to much hope.

Rumours of him out to B City/ Palace.

Shame as he hasn't performed in his few chances to shine as he's a far better player than his performances have shown.

With Dobbie it is a bit of a Catch 22--Gus thought/thinks he is the best thing since 'sliced bread' but when he plays him he does not really perform, so Gus has to drop him. Probably the sort of player who needs some consistent 1st team play but when given the chance he does not come up to the mark. How long do you give someone. Maybe he really does not fit in with BHA??

Yogi,

I don't know the ins and outs about why it hasn't worked for him here but perhaps he isn't the best in training or perhaps a rumour about his family being unable to settle are the reason.

Like you I think it's a shame as he really is a very good player. I feel for him a bit to be honest.

Good luck to him no matter what.

I think that people have totally forgotten just how spectacular Vicente is. He is easily the best player in the Championship. If you need a reminder just look up Brighton and Hove Albion Vicente on youtube. The guy is on another planet. If we get four months out of him this season I will be happy. If I were Gus I would leave him out until mid Feb when the weather will be getting better, Why risk his injury again?

Do you think the few minutes Dobbie has had are ample to make judgement?

Football is tough these days and instant success seems to be what is required. I just feel that he hasn't had enough opportunity to establish himself.

Yes, years ago we had a proper Reserve team fixture list but these days it's gone so there are many players who have to rely on their training sessions to impress the boss when often they show more in proper match play.

I used to kick a ball around most days of the week when not playing but, must admit, used to hate training

Agree 100% I was thinking the same myself.

It does make you wonder why a couple of friendly matches a month aren't knocked up. It would give an opportunity for the fringe players to get a game and impress in a competitive environment whilst also allowing for some of the development squad to get some experience playing with more seasoned pro's.

Nothing I can change though so onwards and upwards

Yep he is quality, I'm sure he plays a big part in training.

I don't think a player with his experience gets upset at not playing. As long as he is getting paid and turns up to train that's his job.

Getting on the pitch on matchday is just a bonus and is the same at any club.

Ray Wilkins has ben pushing for some weeks to get our manager installed at Chelsea. I heard him on Gary Williams sports radio show on five live about two months ago, suggesting his appointment. I think the speculation is inevitable, particularly with Rafa's current turmoil. Our manager's stock is pretty high but ponder how high it will soar if Arsenal are seen off at the Amex or we get tothe Emirates for a replay. Not just Chelsea might be interested.

Hovite says...
1:03pm Fri 18 Jan 13

Ray Wilkins was sacked by Chelsea so I'm not sure if Roman will take much notice of him.

Also for Gus to have convinced Bruno, Orlandi, Lopez, Leo and Vicente to work on our project, and then suddenly leave would show a lack of integrity.

In anycase Chelsea are quite happy to sack managers so it could be a high risk pie in the face moment.

Gus will be here at least until the end of next season, and if we get promoted, he will be here for another year.

The better he does with us the bigger the deal he gets when he moves on.

VegasSeagull says...
1:11pm Fri 18 Jan 13

So many conclusions are being drawn from a split second photo op of Vicente, hardly seems right to me.

To my mind Dobbie is without a role and until he has one he can't be selected. Every point is vital from now to the end of the season, I don't see how we can gamble on Dobbie, maybe next season for him.

2 million bid for Van Dijk, a great move if we can pull it off. From what I have read his club have said any deal for him would not release him until the end of the season. Newcastle are desperate so even if we can persuade his club to let him go now, can we meet the personal terms to compete with Newcastle, Everton are also interested.

Yesterday I said that one player for 2 million was not, 'spending big,' if we get this guy we will be at 4 million plus the Latvian, seems more like it to me.

If Dijk doesn't arrive I guess we can all wait to see who the next CB target is, as there is surely to be one.

WestStander17 says...
1:23pm Fri 18 Jan 13

Not sure we need to look so deeply into Vicente's expression in the picture. If a photo had been taken of some of us in the stands, I'm sure some would've looked similarly unimpressed with the cold weather!

I for one cannot wait to see Vicente play again. I was old enough to start regularly watching the Albion in the last few years at the Goldstone. You all know what we've all been through since then! Back then I would never had even dreamt that we'd be playing in such a magnificent stadium let alone have the chance to see a player that had graced the Champions League, a player Real Madrid had offered £30m for (and been turned down!!!) playing for us! Even if he only manages another half hour in a Brighton shirt, I think we should all remember where we were 15 years ago and be very very thankful that we have had the opportunity to see such a brilliant player play for us and enjoy every single minute we get to see him.

If he is able to get fit and play even an hour each week, I think our chances of making and winning the play-offs increase incredibly. Just by taking corners, we'd probably score 5 or so more goals! CMS would benefit too. We may never know for sure whether his heart is fully into the cause or not but The Dagger is a class above and even at 75% he'd improve any team in the division.

Olé!

P.S. I'm not his agent!

VegasSeagull says...
1:42pm Fri 18 Jan 13

Newcastle, Everton and Sunderland are all interested in Van Dijk but it appears we are the only club to have tabled a bid, so far.
If Gus pulls this one off he deserves a new contract and a pay rise. I hope our wage structure does not impede our chances.
