Birmingham keeper happy with a point

Jack Butland clears from Will Buckley

Jack Butland clears from Will Buckley

First published in Albion by

BIRMINGHAM’S man-of-the-match viewed a draw with Albion as a success.

Jack Butland, the 19-year-old England international, produced a stunning late save to deny Dean Hammond as well as a fine stop to keep out Andrea Orlandi’s free-kick earlier in the second half.

He said: “That is what I am here for, to try to help out the team when I can and thankfully it helped us on the way to getting a point.

“Brighton’s away record is incredibly good. We were at home and would have liked to have got more but against a very good Brighton side it is a very good point.”

Dead right he should be happy. It's us Albion supporters that are not happy about 2 unnecessarily wasted points. Must go for the juglar on Tuesday. No more slip-ups or we will miss the play-offs by quite a margin.

saraman, last year when we were not performing we were still in the play off race for all but the last two games.

Even a point against Blackburn wouldn't be that bad.

Middlesbrough have lost the last 3, Palace have only won 2 in 10.

We may have to win the last 2 games of the season for the play off place, but the fat lady hasn't even called a taxi let alone sing.

Fair point Hovite, it's just the frustration getting at me. I'll be OK come Tuesday. We are all hoping for a play-off birth as well as the players I'm sure.

Fickle... not really a supporter but merely someone who likes to be associated with the buzz of winning! Some people need to be reminded that football is SPORT - and its uncertain outcome is integral to its fascination!

He is probably like a lot of us who wont be able to afford season tickets if we go into the premier league. Premier league team means premier league wages, which have to come from gate receipts. It is not so bad if it is only one in the family who wants to go to football but any more and it will be a no go for many. Be careful what you wish for.

Yep saraman, I'm not without frustration, but it only lasts 10 miniutes. From last years experience and the way we are playing I just look to the next game rather than dwelling on the last. Nothing much worse than conceeding in the 90th, but hey ho.

wiseman, we have to go on a winning streak, win, lose or draw against Blackburn. 2 wins in a row would be good for starters.

Looking forward to the Arsenal game to see if Gus will throw on Vicente and Ulloa from the start.

I think we will get smashed in this one either way. I don't fancy the El Abd Walcott dual, but I hope he tweaks his nipples and pats him on the head for the whole 90. El Abd will win that battle I'm sure ;o)

I truly believe that you take your chance if you are fortunate enough to get to the premier. There is no real way of knowing when the right time. I said I didn't want to get into this debate didn't I. Oh well. Loving the Albion as always.

Whether we get one or no points at Blackburn it will not make or break the rest of the season. The ten points we have lost to injury time goals will. Its all well and good GP saying he is getting used to it now but what is he going to do about it? We are short of a couple of decent defenders and this needs to be addressed for next season because there is no way Bridge will be here on his current form and salary.

I just think it is a question of momentum and keeping this mini undefeated run going. I'm also one who believes that if there is a chance of going up, we seize it. I remember posters a couple of months ago stating that we woud not want to go up prematurely and be a Reading or Soton, who were both struggling. Well, Reading have got a chance of staying up and so have Soton - tho' I'm not so sure after Adkins disgraceful dismissal.
We are still in with a shout.

Am sure I am accused of negativity but it is realism. This not all about money spend now for me ref gus trying to bring in help , more about second half tactics which are costing us points.

I'm not sure I understand this comment - so I am certainly not disagreeing with it - but I do wish people making criticisms (or showing perceived 'negativity') would stop trying to claim they are simply ';realistic'.
Using such terms is to suggest that the contrary view is somehow 'pie in the sky' - or 'unrealistic'
That's just rhetoric!

We are trying to bring in at least two more players. One center back and a nother defender.Gus knows our short commings and is trying to do something about them.
Yes but he can't get Dunk off the wage bill.Because like Hoskins everyone in the football world knows the trouble that comes with him off the park.
When I was walking my dog in Woodingdean I meet Dunk with his Mum and Dad near where they live. It’s well known locally what a nice sensible person Lewis is. My dog talks more sense than you freeloader, out his back side.
Well thanks to the press we all know thats not true. But i can understand you are going to do all you can to keep one of your family freeloading.I just hope the Albion can find another club to take him off the clubs hands. The two they asked soon pulled out once they found out about him.More championship scouts thought the two Crawley lads to be much better players.I know Reading did for sure.Such a nice lad he couldn't even say sorry to the fans after the Palace game. But Buckley could.

Fair point Hovite, it's just the frustration getting at me. I'll be OK come Tuesday. We are all hoping for a play-off birth as well as the players I'm sure.
Why aim only for a play-off place. Surely automatic promotion must be the target. Reading were much further adrift last year - and hit a rich vein of form. If we can get rid of this fear of losing leads, and Ulloa and Vicente et al start to sparkle - I could see us putting a run of 8 or more wins in a row sometime soon!

I agree with the posts about our second half play. We have been scoring early in the game recently so why can we not continue to play ALL the game like the first half, but if the opposition comes 'storming' at us we must learn--and quickly---how to close down a game. If we can scor two goals early on why can we not contine and score two more???

2nd place is possible and that destiny is still in our hands. Don't think any team will get close to Cardiff though, have to give them credit and they are flying.

They are one team who are well equipped for the Prem, without having a player overhaul in the summer.

On the Dunky subject I see from one of the Argus pieces above Dunk is due in court so we shall have closure on the subject one way or another and hopefully we can move on. May make Gus's options a bit clearer as well??

Careful for what you wish for! many of our new supporters have been used to our winning ways and promotion, some years back we gained entry to the then Division1,, the initial excitement soon evaporated, despite new signings we were on the defensive game after game, little entertainment and relegation came to put us out of our misery, gates fell and we almost became a non-league side.
Look at the once top teams with modern stadiums now barely half full, for me a good Championship side is
all we should aim for.
