Barnes fancied an Emirates replay

Ashley Barnes celebrates his goal Ashley Barnes celebrates his goal

Ashley Barnes has admitted he thought Albion were heading for a place in today's FA Cup fifth round draw.

Barnes scored against Arsenal yesterday but a late Theo Walcott goal gave the Gunners a 3-2 win.

The Seagulls were eyeing a possible replay at the Emirates after twice coming from behind.

Barnes said: “We are disappointed. We thought we had a replay or maybe we could even nick it at the end.

“But they have got top players in their team and they came out with the win.”

Barnes is convinced Albion can take momentum from their performance against the Gunners into their Championship campaign.

He added: "We need to get back to the league and start picking up points.

"You learn a lot. Everything about them is Premer League class and that is where we want to be.

"Hopefully we get there this season."

The Arsenal match showed two things to me. First it showed that we have some quality in our ranks, our performance was great.

Second it showed, IMHO, that our minds were too into this match for the 90 minutes we played against Blackburn.

The difference between the two performances was night and day, not just as a team but also individualy. I for one am glad that we don't have a replay as we can now get our heads firmly focused on the challenges that lie ahead.

Question is can we lift our game for rest of season, really we should be ten points better off, centre back needed urgently.

I fail to see what Gus sees in Barnes , i know some people will not like my views , but i just don't see what he brings to the team'

So Gosport, after his outstanding performance against Arsenal, are you beginning at last to see what Gus and most of the rest of our fans see in Ashley?

Seagull John.
Perhaps you and I, and maybe others, simply look for different things in players. Barnes as an individual is one thing but Barnes and how he fits into the game plan is something different.

If you were to list just a few of the qualities we would hope our players have I think some of them might be; Work Rate, An eye for goal, Commitment, Brave in the tackle, Versitile and perhaps Passion.

Given the performances that Barnes has put in over recent weeks, which of the attributes I have listed would you say he is lacking in?

I don't think many would say that he doesn't have a good work rate. An eye foe gaol, hasn't he been popping them in recently. I doubt there are many more commited to the cause, he dosen't leave much in the dressing room. Brave in the tackle, certainly brave if at times a tad over zealous. Versatile, apart from the back five where does he not play, Gus has created this in the lad. Passion, is there anyone that doesn't think that he passionate about Brighton and what he thinks and knows he can do.

What more do you want from him to persuade you that he is worth his place?

If your thinking is geared to the fact that you would rather see Hoskins start in place of Barnes, what has Hoskins done to show that he deserves it. It is not his fault, (Hoskins) that he has not had a lot of playing time but without it, well we have very little to judge him by.

I think you may have slipped from agreeing with me at the start to forgetting I was quoting Gosport Gull. Barnes is the most valuable player in the team in many ways, some of which you have listed. Before the Arsenal match, I was confident he would play with Ulloa ahead of CMS, because Ashley clearly has a fine football brain as evidenced by Gus's unswerving support and the way Vicente used to find him more than any other player.

Barnes should be one of the first names on the team sheet for his work rate, effort and commitment to team's success at the expense of his own.

Of 32 out of contract players he is one of only five with the other four being Bridge, Greer, El-Abd and Bridcutt that I would give another contract to.

Barnes started on the left and when Buckley was replaced by KLL, Barnes moved to the right. He had a great game, left, right and centre lasted the full 90 and could have scored twice, but for a great save. I don’t think Orlandi could have been used as well as Banres was, even though he may be considered better on the left.

This is a great example of setting up the team to cover all eventualities and more than that, when Greer came off we had a solution for that as well. Great selections and substitutions.

Yes, Sheff Weds will be the acid test on Saturday, Mark, especially with them coming off a good win at Charlton. How many times have we seen teams come out flat after an epic cup performance?

I guess Greer and Buckley will be out for 2-3 weeks. Both are key to our success and isn't it typical of football that Greer should go down when Dunk is unavailable?

We may end up falling just short this season but I've seen enough in recent weeks to know there is a lot of quality in this squad.

Somehow, some way, we have to find a way to keep Bridge and as you quite rightly point out, our more immediate target has to be a central defender. We're lacking height at the back and while Calde has been brilliant lately, it's asking a lot of him to play alongside El Abd in the middle.

I for one have criticised Barnes on a number of occasions, but yesterday but for the clear early chance he missed he had a good game, he can play many different roles and gives full commitment, but he hasn't excelled in any position thus far even though in fairness to him he was asked to switch again when Buckley went off, but you have to give him credit to him for some of the good stuff rather than just saying he is know good don't know why Gus plays him

I agree, anyone who saw them win away on tv the other week will know weds put a lot of balls in the area, good physical forwards.. Without someone 6 ft plus, we will struggle .
Watched the highlights today, played some good stuff....
I would imagine one or two leaving this week, Hoskins?

Can't fault the effort yesterday, great performance, but when you play against a top Prem team it will always highlight where the weaknesses are that we need to fix in order to progress.
I agree with a post above that Barnes was MOM.
Our weakness, I think, are Greer and ElAbd primarily, and we do still miss a top quality "offensive" midfielder.
Sign two center backs, bring in Forster Caskey in the middle (or Vicente when fit), and we'll be rocking towards the Prem.
Oh, and off course, no more Ankergren or Brezovan in goal.

I think Barnes has more than proved himself and the comment I hear every week "Hoskins should play" is getting a bit boring, he scored one, made one and defended set peices more times than I can remember, move on people.

Not sure why people bang on about Barnes? Been here two seasons and not set the world on fire to say the least! Barnes lacks pace, a bit of skill, however his role in the side changes week on week, his defensive work and chasing back is missed by many in the stands,
Some on here keep on about jfc? Based on what? Lad went out on loan and did very little, he will come good, but not if you want him rushed into the side.

Disappointed to see CMS not line up with Ulloa. You do get the feeling they will not be allowed to strike up a partnership in the same way that Vokes and Painter never appeared at ther same time as CMS.

It's a shame but I think CMS will be on his way by the summer if not this week.

Anyone actually at the match yesterday must be blind if they could not see Barnes' contribution to the team performance. Add to that a fabulous headed goal and an excellent cross for Ulloa's diving header and he was clearly MoM against a top quality Premiershiip team.

Why do people doubt Ashleys quality I think he has proved so far to be a better acquisition than CMS in that he didn't cost 2 and a half million and isn't on the same wages as CMS and how many goals have they each scored for the club?

People knock Barnes because he is inconsistent I think. But yesterday he seemed to be appearing in places you would normally not expect him to be, (i.e on the right wing firing in a perfect cross for Ulloa to score).
Maybe, whatever role he was given yesterday was because of Ulloa being in the starting 11, and clearly Gus started the two of them in preference to CMS and Ulloa because Barnes is familiar with the need to play a part elsewhere on pitch, not just spearheading the attack, which is the only thing CMS has been doing, and not very well I might add.
Personally i'd stick with Ulloa and Barnes, but we desperately need a Vicente or Forster Caskey character playing in the hole behind them, "al la Jack Wiltshire.

Anyone else notice that CMS basicaly did nothing and achieved nothing for the time he was on the field yesterday.

If we can still get 2 mill or more for him I'd take it in a heartbeat, and use Hoskins as my bench striker

We need Ashley Barnes more than some are prepared to acknowledge. He has obvious shortcomings (which he may overcome, being young), but his versatility and self motivation are real assets.

Someone above, whilst at long last giving Barnes a bit of praise, still mentioned that he missed an early chance. Well, I dont think he did a lot wrong, and the keeper saved it.
Secondly.. certain "heroes" come on, run around a lot and do far less and get praised to the hilt - yet Barnes works his socks off every time he is picked, yet is given dogs abuse for every little error.
Question - when does a player who has scored 35 goals (including one season as top scorer) stop becomng rubbish, and start becoming a Brighton hero? Tough crowd!

As for CMS, i think it is clear he needs a move away from us. You want to love him but then he goes and misses from three yards out... If we can raise the money from his sale to buy a class centre half, it will be a good piece of business.

Hmmmmmnn. How do you solve a problem like CMS? It is little worrying that our record signing (by quite some way) doesn't appear to be offering enough to be picked at the moment. ulloa showed enough in the one game to appear to have a nose for goal, how many people think Cms would've scored that diving header. No, he have scuffed it off his head and the ball would've either gone wide (when easier to score) or bounced of his knee and torso into the net, resulting in Cms name on the score sheet again when we all knew it was an accident!!! Don't get me wrong I'm a cms lover but do we all have to face the fact that we made a BIG mistake there? Certainly he seems miles away from a Scotland recall and if Poyet is to be believed no bids for him.

Thoughts guys??
