GUS Poyet has hailed Albion’s 1-0 win over Hull as a turning point in their push for a Championship play-off place.

The seventh-placed Seagulls will be back in the top six for the first time since early October if they follow up their victory against the Tigers with another win at The Amex against eighth-placed Blackburn tomorrow night and Middlesbrough fail to beat Leeds at home.

Boss Poyet said: “I think it could be key, a turning point you can call it or key moment of the season. We’ll see how big or important it was depending on what we do on Tuesday.

“At the beginning of January we played four away and only Derby at home. It’s a big difference when we play at The Amex with the fans and the players liking to go forward a little bit more than normal.

“Now it’s the opposite, we have got three at home and one away so it’s there for us to take and win games. We’ll see, who knows? We’ve got a chance that’s for sure and the players are really up for it.”

Poyet used the league table as a motivational tool for his players to beat fourth-placed Hull in the tea-time kick-off after none of the other teams in the top 12 had won.

He told The Argus: “I didn’t check it to that extent but I knew we were in a great situation. We showed the players the table before the game and where we would jump to with a win.

“It was the first time we have done that but I thought it was important to see that, because sometimes you can find yourself not playing at three o’clock and then you are 15th in the table and it looks terrible but it’s looking very good for us.

“Let’s see where we are at the beginning of April with six, seven or eight games to go and then you can have a final sprint and get in there but it’s totally up to us. We are playing against teams that are in there, like Hull, so if we beat them they are six-pointers.”
